3.0 out of 5 starsgreat monitor but hurts my eyes
Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2019
I recently had a VG248QE monitor which is 144hz monitor no g-sync. Then I got this alien-ware monitor and I noticed a massive difference. Everything was so smooth and crisp and I flip and actually see the cross hair and where my opponents head was; when I tried on 144hz it would look blurry. The color are really impressive for tn panel which is one of the reasons i got this monitor. I tried the ASUS 240hz monitor and it look so awful I couldn't stand it the colors were so inaccurate it ruined my gaming experience. So I had to return it. I wanted something that had decent color and a great refresh speed and this monitor has both of those. Except there is one big problem that others have alluded to in other reviews. This monitor doesn't have eye care and after 5 minutes of using it I could already feel my eyes hurting. I turned the brightness down to 0 and it didn't really help. That really the only problem I have with this monitor, but it kinda a big one. The only other slightly bad thing is you can kinda notice a glossy film over the screen if you look really hard, it isn't a huge thing but something to note. I'm going to try to give this monitor a few more days to see if it gets any better. Overall best monitor iv'e gotten except it hurts my eyes which is really depressing. :,(

Arrived a day early, packaging was the actual product box which is terrible to be left on a porch, the box itself seemed to have a lot of wear and tear which had me worried at the start. Where it get's a 5 star rating is this: the monitor was perfect. No damage, no BLB, no dead pixels, and to top it off the product itself was sublime. Very easy to install, visually stunning, and graphically it was bar none. With that being said let me heed some advice for any of you perspective buyers.

This is a highly niche monitor for those looking to get the most performance out of a GPU that can put it out. Do not buy this if you have a mid-tier graphics card that won't be capable of making the most out of those 240hz. Also, i got lucky with my delivery. The damage to the packageing was superficial so it's nothing to complain about, some packages may be mishandled, some packages might just be DoA or have dead pixels by just factory defect. That is the risk you run when you have a 3rd party seller providing you tech. Amazon does it's best to prevent these issues, but sometimes you are just unlucky. It is by no fault of the product itself. So if you see these 1-2 star ratings and get worried if this monitor is worth it, let me lay it out for you, YES* If you are a part of the the very small niche of computer owners that not only have a machine capable of using this monitor to it's full potential, but also are purchasing with the intention of using it to it's full capacity. Save yourself some money and a get 144 hz monitor that will do just fine otherwise. For those still on board with purchasing, you just gotta hope you're one of the lucky ones and it arrives in one piece. If it doesn't, you can just return it and get a new one or go to a computer store and pay full price and personally ensure it gets home safe. I hope this has been helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought this 7 Years ago and it still holds up

I bought this monitor back in November of 2017 for myself as a bday gift. This monitor has been with me just about everywhere I've gone and lived at. Every time someone comes over and tries the 240hz for the first time they're immediately blown away, I have some people scoff at it only being a 1080p monitor but that doesn't matter the second they start seeing how smooth and responsive it is they immediately want to get one.

One day this thing just didn't turned on, come to find out that if you call Dell who is partnered with Alienware they will just full on replace the monitor for you because I believe it has life time warranty. Certain products offer this but mine died in 2020 and ever since they've sent me the new one it's been working completely fine. I cannot recommend this monitor enough, if they ever make (probably already have just haven't looked) this monitor with higher resolutions I would totally rebuy it again.

This monitor is beast. It is perfect. Easy to adjust. Crystal clear, smooth. I just barely started playing games and went from a 13" Dell laptop from 2012. This will run anything you throw at it linked up to a good graphics card of course. Fortnite isn't the greatest game to showcase this monitor, and the video doesn't do justice either. You will not be disappointed with this monitor, well worth its weight in gold. This is an excellent buy for $500. Wouldn't want to pay more than that. 240hz is a huge difference, and the predator monitors look great too but i went with this one. This monitor has several characteristics I was looking for: The G-Sync / 240hz and within the 25" max you want for a 1080p x 1920 monitor anyway, this monitor has the hallmarks of a great product that will not be dated within 4 years. If you already have a 140hz then it might not be worth upgrading. If you can swing the extra bucks it is totally worth buying.

I just like music
4.0 out of 5 stars Good when on sale, mediocre panel quality, superb gaming experience.

The monitor is a pretty good deal at the $430 I purchased it for compared to the other 240HZ G-Sync compatible monitors which are usually upwards of $500.

I would however not recommend paying the full asking price for this monitor because of a couple of quirks which I will outline below.

The panel itself is pretty even upon first glance, but with closer inspection it is evident that it suffers from the same issues that other the other 240HZ monitors have. Because they are all using the same AUO 240HZ panels, there will be similarities.

The issue that I found are the following:

1. The edges of the monitor have a sort of "dirty" look where they look to be darker. This is because of a certain cloudiness that the panel has. What this means is that looking at solid white, grey, and black images reveal that the panel is not really consistent in it's lighting.

Both panels I had suffered from this, with the replacement being considerably worse and also suffering from a bit of back-light bleed on the bottom edge. My original monitor has NO back-light bleed, but suffers from the same uneven cloudy looking panel.

2. Setting the monitor to anything other than "normal" response times causes extreme, and very noticeable overshoot. At first I thought this was an issue because who doesn't want faster response time? It turns out that "response time" is usually synonymous with "overdrive" on these panels, and the default setting of "normal" still has the advertised 1ms GTG response time without the need of over-driving, since at 240HZ there is little to no ghosting. I suggest ignoring this setting.

3. ULMB seems to be finnicky. The manual states that turning off G-Sync int he Nvidia control panel will allow you to turn on the ULMB setting on the monitor, but this wasn't true for both monitors I tested. Turning off the G-Sync didn't stop this setting from being grayed out, and as of now I have no idea how to turn it on, but it's not the biggest deal since the screen doesn't get overly blurry in chaotic gaming moments.

4. Unlike most monitors this doesn't have a dedicated "Turn on G-Sync" option. This is minor, but very confusing if you're using to turning on G-Sync in the NVCP and then on your monitor. According to the Manual the monitor will be running in G-Sync as long as it's turned on in the N-Vidia control panel.

Now for the pros.

1. The monitor is geared towards gaming performance and it performs wonderfully. The 240HZ is definitely noticeable even when you're not gaming. Mouse smoothness is better than 144hz when doing day-to-day tasks, and if ou can push 200+FPS in games you will notice a difference. In MOBA and shooters like CS:GO that are easy to push to 300+FPS the lowered input delay and smoothness is very nice.

2. The stand, while possibly over-designed is fantastic. It is heavy, solid, and very stable. The monitor can twist and turn without the base moving form where you planted it, and the cable routing does its job. I wish that it allowed for a bit more forward tilt but that's minor.

The bottom line is, the panel quality is mediocre. Uneven backlighting and clouding issues, but this isn't unique to this monitor. You will have a certain degree of this with any of the AUO 240HZ Tn panels, which is all of the 24.5-25 inch monitors on the market at the moment, but that's not what you're paying for. You're paying for a solid quality monitor with a very heavy duty stand and unparalleled gaming performance.

If you can snag this at $430 or below it is a steal. The "g-sync tax" is only about $80 over it's freesync counterpart and is worth it for times when you cant push 244fps and don't want screen tearing. considering that most 144hz g-sync monitors hover around $350-400 paying a slight bit more for some future proofing is definitely worth it. Dell's customer service and warranty has always been top notch for their monitors from my experience, with the benefit of being able to take advantage of their Alienware specific customer service.

I've had this monitor for about 9 months and I couldn't be happier. This thing is so damn smooth I tried playing a game on my 2nd monitor which is 144 hz and it feels unplayable. I always hear people say there is no difference between 144 hz and 240 hz and the funny thing is all the people saying that have never used a 240 hz monitor.

While the difference isn't as drastic as 60 > 144 its still enough to ruin playing at 144 hz ever again lol. If your GPU/CPU can push ~200 + fps then you're golden. I'm not sure if this is G-Sync technologies pitfalls or the monitors but I do notice a slightly stuttery/unsmooth image when my fps drops below 170 ish on a game im used to having 200+ fps. Its really not that big of a deal but its the only con about this monitor.

I love the stand too its very sturdy and heavy and is made from actual metal & just feels solid when i adjust my monitors orientation or height unlike my benq monitor which is some synthetic plastic and doesnt feel quality.

With Nvidia launching their 3000 series cards now more than ever is the time to get this monitor.

It doesn't let me down so far. No dead pixel at all. It kept getting higher than 140 fps on Cod MW2, DOOM, GTA, and many more. Make sure it's right GPU for your monitor. There are setting to adjust Present Modes and Response Time.
Except Xbox Series X and PS5 cause it doesn't support HDR (4k)...

I got a new Alienware R7 Desktop with Nvidia 1080 graphics card. I was torn on what kind of monitor I wanted since I do a lot of gaming. So I decided to give the Alienware AW2518H a try. The monitor stand its really nice and its fully adjustable. Setup was snap and it came with all the cables I need to get it working. The back panel that removes to access cable storage is bit tricky to get back on and that would really be my only negative. The screen looks beautiful and it quickly linked with G Sync on my computer. I wish the monitor has a way to access the menus from the computer instead of the actual monitor and the same with Alienware FX as well. I am getting great FPS for game play, and so far I have been very happy. I will update this review as time goes on. Also it looks very cool on my desk, and the back fo the monitor has LEDs that light up. For the price point(I got on sale) I am very happy with my purchase. I didnt want a huge monitor for gaming, and this was a perfect fit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best monitor in it's class.
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2019

I've only had this monitor for a few days now, but so far it has been amazing. I do have a good old list of pro's and con's so far though, and here are my thoughts:

Pro's:
-240Hz!!!!!!!!!!! (You knew this had to be here.)
-G-sync is amazing, and paired with the 240Hz it's so smooth I have trouble leaving my wife alone in the room with it.
-The bezel is thinner than my wallet after buying this thing.
-The panel is great. For a TN panel it has good colors and view angles, but of course it will never compete with a VA or IPS panel in these departments. I won the lottery and had not a single dead pixel on arrival, looks great!
-Aesthetics are always going to be subjective, but I like the AW features on this monitor, it stands out, there's no doubt of it's AW heritage, but it isn't slapping me in the face with it and looks clean (looking at you Asus ROG and Acer Predator).
-Build quality is tops. None of the plastics feel cheap and all the metal construction adds to the premium feel.

Neutral:
-The build quality comes at a cost...weight and bulk. This thing is fairly hefty and I'm certain I would have thrown a tantrum trying to wire and mount this baby if it weren't for the 90° rotation on the stand (and bear in mind this is only a 25" monitor).
-It's expensive. This is not a negative though in my humble opinion. G-Sync modules are a premium that makes the cost of a monitor shoot through the roof. This is not Dell/AW's fault, merely a fact of life (currently) and if you want absolute top end and flawless performance, you need to get an Nvidia GPU and a G-Sync monitor. This monitor is priced right along with others in it's class and quality (Acer Predator has a TN panel, 1440p, 144Hz that is similar in price, and Asus has at least one monitor that also has the same feature set as the AW2518H for around the same price). So again, not a negative point to me, given the state of things, but worth talking about.
-The OSD and other menu features are great, they work, are self-explanatory, and do what they need to do. I would have greatly preferred some kind of multi-directional switch similar to other monitors in this class and price-point though.
-240Hz is amazing, as I've said. But, to run this monitor at it's full potential you need a top end GPU to take advantage of those delicious frames (think at a minimum a GTX 1080 and preferably a 1080Ti or RTX 2080). That's not to say that this can't be run on a lesser card, My wife's system (which currently runs a GTX 1070) still works well with it, thanks to G-Sync. Whether she is in the mid double-digit frames per second or blazing at a little over 200, it's always smooth as butter. So TL;DR: don't expect the 240Hz to be fully realized without a top end GPU.

Con's:
-Can we all take a moment to give the design team a round of applause for the top-notch build quality? I know I've mentioned it in all three categories now, but seriously this thing is a tank. However, you guys seriously over did the stand. It's massive. Don't get me wrong, I can shake the desk like it owes me money and that monitor doesn't move a millimeter. It has a nice layer of a type of silicone rubber under the stand that sticks to my tempered glass desktop like glue. But it also covers a serious amount of real estate. We're talking enough to land a SpaceX rocket on. I replaced my wife's old 24" Asus monitor with this, and within 20 or 30 minutes of gameplay after tweaking the settings and getting the colors and stuff where she liked it we had to completely reorganize her desk to accommodate this behemoth of a stand because she kept banging her mouse on it.

To be fair to Alienware/Dell, this monitor is a 5-star that only loses it's perfection status to it's overly bulky stand. I'm sure that the shape could be changed to make it more desktop-friendly without sacrificing stability.
Otherwise you folks made an amazing monitor.

4.0 out of 5 stars The performance of this monitor from a visual and competitive perspective is great. However, the stand is a huge issue for me.
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2018

The stand was not well thought out as in order to have this monitor an appropriate distance away from your eyes it causes the feet to invade space that would be occupied by your mouse. Most monitors use a stand that supports the monitor in the front and causes you to have less space directly in front of the monitor. This is usually fine because the keyboard doesn't require motion and a static position resting in front is fine. This monitor stand sticks out into your mouse zone and not only that the monitor's behavior with the stand on mouse wire even when using a mouse bungee is terrible. Its sharp so should having to aim down very fast and extending the bungee the mouse will catch on the edge of the foot. This monitor would be perfect if the stand wasnt so intrusive. Very Very Very amazing quality though. If the stand was redesigned or they had a different stand option they sold then this would easily be 5/5 stars. I just find that the intrusiveness of the stand causes me to be battling with the monitor a large portion of time during competitive games.
