5.0 out of 5 stars The most powerful console to date that delivers high-end PC quality visuals.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 27, 2018

Lets get this out of the way first before I continue - Anyone expecting games that run at 900-1080p and 30fps to suddenly be Native 4k AND 60fps are going to be disappointed. That's not to say that 60fps isn't possible but certainly aren't going to see a 4x+ resolution jump and a 2x Frame rate jump isn't possible with this hardware. MS promised that the console would deliver 'true' 4k HDR gaming at up to 60fps - as seen in Forza Motorsport 7.

Now for the review.
Its clear that MS's vision for the 'Project Scorpio' was to provide a 4x resolution increase as well as improve the visuals beyond just resolution on XB1 software has been realised. Its not a 'next' generation console and the best way to describe it is a 4k XB1. The fact that the CPU has not been significantly improved compared to the massive increase with the GPU and RAM shows that this was built purely to deliver the XB1 games with a significantly enhanced 'visual' experience predominantly most beneficial to owners of 4k and/or HDR displays. The GPU itself is more than 4x as powerful (4.3x the XB1S and 4.6x the original XB1) - essentially a whole PS4 GPU more powerful than a PS4 Pro's - yet the CPU has only seen a 30% increase to its clock speed. RAM has 50% more and that is 50% faster than is in the PS4 Pro too to enable higher quality textures, improved loading times etc too.

The design of the console is impressive too - considering the power inside, its similar in size to the Slim. I know its 'smaller' but the dimensions are slightly bigger in some cases and lower in others but the overall impression is that it is similar in size. Its also smaller than the PS4 Pro. It feels weighty and very solid. Considering all that power, its also quiet in operation too - the vapour chamber cooling system seems to quiet - not silent but even when pushing it by running 4k HDR games for hours on end, the noise is minimal in my set-up and not as loud as my PS4 Pro. I actually think its quieter than my XB1 Slim was too. The only difference between the 'Project Scorpio' and the 'X' is some cosmetic 'dots' that create the 'fade' and 'Project Scorpio' logo on the front and top of the controller. You also get the stand included with the Project Scorpio edition.

Anyway, that's the hardware but most will be interested in the games and what 'difference' all that 'power' actually makes. It's difficult to generalise as the developers are free to utilise the extra resources how they wish which could mean that the Devs only increase the resolution, others may have more 'tweaks' to the visual settings - better shadow quality - both sharper and resolved at greater distance, better draw distances/less pop-in, better anisotropic filtering (textures look better at angles), better ambient Occlusion (the shadows that make objects look more 3D and adds more depth to the world) etc. Some games offer multiple options to give gamers more choice - whether they want the best 'resolution', higher frame rate, or even best 'visuals' (the mode that offers the highest quality visual settings). Rise of the Tomb Raider offers all 3 choices with the Resolution mode offering Native 4k at 30fps (same visual settings as base XB1 - just a resolution increase), the 'enhanced' visual mode is chequerboard 4k/30fps and frame rate mode is (upto) 60fps at 1080p. by comparison, the PS4 Pro also has all 3, but the resolution mode is Chequerboard 4k, and both the enhanced and frame rate modes are 1080p. The 60fps mode also has a lower average. I am not criticising the Pro here but using it as a guideline to show the difference.

In general, if you look at the resolution of the Pro vs the X, the X often has more than a 2x higher pixel count. There are now over 100 enhanced titles for the Project Scorpio. In all cases, the difference between the XB1S and XB1X is significant. Even if you only have a 1080p TV, the difference is noticeable. Its no secret that the XB1 struggles to deliver a 'full' HD (1080p) and therefore the difference is more noticeable but even those games that are 1080p look better with a supersampled 4k image on the X. Loading times are improved, Backwards compatible games tend to play much better too and of course those XB1 non-enhanced games also benefit from the extra power of the X - especially as so many games these days use dynamic scaling (flutuating resolution) and/or unlocked frame rates. These games run at, or much closer to their capped level which may transform some games into much more playable and consistent experiences.

In summary, the Xbox One X is the most powerful console on the market and that also is evident in the visuals and performance of the games. I personally think it makes more sense for XB1 gamers to purchase, regardless of their TV's capability, than the PS4 Pro is for PS4 owners. A lot of PS4 games run at 1080p anyway and those with 1080p TV's often get very little from 'enhanced' games - no choice to play at higher frame rates, visuals the same as the PS4 with no supersampling etc so the few games that benefit them are maybe not worth the investment. The fact the X is significantly more powerful (or that the XB1S isn't that powerful), the difference is far more noticeable. If you have, or are planning on getting a 4k HDR TV, then it makes even more sense. Then you can also take advantage of the 4k HDR Bluray player too which is excellent by the way - image quality is as good as a dedicated 4k HDR bluray player - although I recommend getting a 'media remote' and doesn't load up as quickly or as quiet as a dedicated player but its still an excellent player. With over 100 enhanced games, and more being added regularly, there is a lot of choice and genres for every gamer. I know the Xbox gets stick for a 'lack' of 'exclusives - but there are 15-20 enhanced 'exclusives' already with Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3, Ori and the Will o the Wisps, the Last Night etc still to come. Its definitely the 'best' console for multi-platform games too and the closest console to delivering the high-end 4k visuals PC gamers enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A year of use with the Scorpio in review

Upon receiving my Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition, I was greeted with a nice, slim box which is numbered to tie with the console inside. A very heavy thing, the whole package confirms that this is the most physically-dense console that's probably ever been made. Inside, everything is protected by black foam in order to add a nice 'cool' factor to the product as a whole.

The first plus that I see upon opening is that while the Project Scorpio livery is not a photogenic design, it is much more distinct in front of your own eyes and the stand that is packaged nearer the opening than the console is a welcome addition. Somehow, I think it's almost a shame to sit the Xbox horizontally as the impression of the Project Scorpio gradient would be easily neutralised.

The second plus came as a cold, solid feeling to the hands - a fresh version 2 controller with grey buttons and the Project Scorpio device ascending toward the shoulders of the controller. Having never touched a version 2 before, this seemed to be a spot-on improvement to the thing that came in 2013.

Accompanied with the Gold and Game Pass trials, this was a good deal from the outset.

As I was adding this machine to a setup that included a reasonable gaming desktop and a 2TB PS4, the start of the negatives immediately mildly annoyed me.

Duracell AA batteries were a good inclusion for what they were, but I was annoyed at the weird commercial thing that Microsoft are doing in not just wiring a LiPo cell to the controller's board and doing away with the wasteful, obsolete design that incorporates separate batteries. That there was no Micro USB cable included and all of that comes with the 1400mAh Play & Charge kit is just a kick in the teeth when you consider that even Nintendo's JoyCons incorporate batteries into their designs. It's a £600 console. How much more money do Microsoft want to grab?

The second negative came a month down the line, when I was having a little trouble balancing the controller on my thigh during a Call of Duty: WWII session and had to catch it during a fall using the headset that was plugged in. Even for an afterthought, the 3.5mm jack in this controller is probably the worst-implemented I've ever seen in this kind of device. One clumsy moment is all it takes to completely ruin your jack's reliability. I would either advise you to gain at least 100lbs if you want to do what I did or just put the thing on whatever you're sitting on.

The third negative is the experience versus a baseline 8th generation console. This is a big one as the step-up in price from the Xbox One and PS4 is so significant. On booting Call of Duty: WWII, which I had pre-ordered and took delivery of before the Xbox One X came out, I noticed that it was a perfect replica of Advanced Warfare - just with dirt all over everything and none of those fancy displays that seemed to be present absolutely everywhere. One of the included guns - ergo points of direct comparison, the MP40, was visually unchanged between both games. Other titles such as Ark: Survival Evolved, which was a slideshow of dinosaurs on the PS4, remained an equally-ugly slideshow on the One X. This reality remains true of all other titles on the console and a problem that it shares with the PS4 Pro.

The operating system has been a negative from day one, as I've heard from many of my friends who've been playing Xbox Ones since release. The major updates that have been released over the years have introduced several anti-features such as losing snapping functionality and a navigation system that is variably-intelligible, even coming over from Windows 10.

The overwhelming positive that will leave Xbox owners having a much better experience, however, is the games library. It incorporates a well-polished on-demand service n the form of Game Pass and the back-catalogue of games is almost as complete as it needs to be. Xbox and Xbox 360 titles are all perfectly re-created for the Xbox One and the growing list of games that Xbox One is back-compatible with only makes the Xbox the stronger overall where things really matter.

Overall, it's probably a worthwhile upgrade from the Xbox One by now, but some of those business decisions send me flying on extensive and irritating rants that have endangered one of my friendships in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars For The Enthusiasts And 4K Diehards

After spending most of yesterday playing Middle Earth Shadow Of War and attempting to install Forza 7 Ultimate Edition and Quantum Break (Jesus Christ!?!) I believe I'm ready to offer a moderately informed opinion. Although officially hailed as "The Worlds Most Powerful Console" at the end of the day its still only an Xbox and I'm not sure I remember a console ever launching without an Exclusive title supporting it (Fair Enough The Switch Only Had Breath Of The Wild But It Was Ground-breaking).

What you get is an improved Audio-Visual performance all packaged inside a truly minimalist slab of modern consumer electronics design taking up less space than the previous "VCR" sized iterations. Microsoft "claims" to have employed cutting edge engineering techniques to achieve its sleek form factor including a Vapour Chamber Cooling System which I can attest leads to an impressively quiet machine which throughout all of yesterdays gameplay never raised above a near silent hum, it also did not get very warm considering how long I had it on for and also the PS4 Pro is significantly louder which I was surprised by.

The major, if not only reason to buy Xbox One X is its UHD/4K Performance which is "unparalleled" in the console sector, although in my own opinion there may be more going on in Shadow Of War but I seriously think Horizon Zero Dawn looks better. The Xbox "detects" your 4K TV and takes you straight to the set up screen, which was helpful. I had a quick go on Quantum Break this morning as at 75% it lets you open the game and I thought initially it had High Quality visuals but it probably almost certainly looks crisper, I cant comment on performance as it was only the First Chapter.

Although not a massive Driving Game fan I believe this is the one area Microsoft dominates Sony, I can see there being very few games that will reach the fabled benchmark of Visuals and Performance set by Forza Motorsports 7, the texture detail on the Car Models and Scenery, the incredible lighting and reflection effects and astonishingly fluid movement and in Wet Overcast weather the experience borders on genuine photorealism. With over half of the 1TB storage already taken up by Alan Wake, Quantum Break, Shadow Of War and Forza 7 its needless to say an external memory storage will probably be a must and I can see trying to install Gears Of War 4, Rise Of The Tomb Raider, Recore easily polishing off the remaining storage.

Being more of a PS4 PRO person I think you would be hard pressed to see the difference between PlayStation Exclusives such as Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn in comparison to anything on the One X and you also have The Last Of Us 2, God Of War and Death Stranding to look forward to, for those interested in VR the PlayStation has its own headset whilst the One X does not, I've had to order third party titles such as AC Origins and Shadow Of War just to have something to try out on the One X, the one thing the PS4 PRO doesn't have is a 4K Blu-Ray Drive but seeing as I couldn't tell you the last Blu-Ray I bought let alone 4K Blu-Ray in the world of Netflix and Amazon (which offer 4K Films/Programming if your TV is compatible) it seems like a damp squib.

Microsoft has marketed the One X as an Elite Product for enthusiasts and that's what it is, the technology and engineering are impressive, the One X is weighty and sleek and offers (so far) incredible visuals and performance without any lag, the closest the current gen has gotten to PC gaming. Although you can get a PS4-PRO with a game for £350 and with Christmas fast approaching there are all sorts of deals on One S's so is the One X worth an additional £100? it depends on the consumer but probably not and without a seconds hesitation I believe the PS4-PRO has better games and if Graphical Prowess was such an integral part of a consumers choice of console I doubt the Switch would be outselling the Xbox 3 to 1, Third Party Titles will undoubtedly at times look and perform better on the One X than the PS4-PRO, is that worth an additional £100? only you can answer, I came so close to cancelling this as I already have the Forza Edition Xbox One but at the moment I kind of like it.

One final note as it didn't arrive on Launch Day I got an automated apology from Amazon and £20 Store Credit which is better than a kick in the teeth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome console but not much different to PS4 pro

Great piece of hardware but overpriced for what it's shown off so far. Not really any games yet to show it's potential compared to the PS4 Pro especially for the extra £150+ required

If you only game on the Xbox and have a 4k TV then it's a no brainer. Just don't go expecting much of a jump in the way of graphics as its sole purpose is to display games in as high of a resolution as it can.

It's most certainly more powerful than the PS4 Pro and there's no denying that and it feels like a much better quality console. I actually prefer it over my PS4 Pro and there's been more games ready at launch for it.

If you have a 1080p TV then it really doesn't make any sense to upgrade as you're missing the point of this console.

Full HDR 10 is by far the best part of upgrading these consoles. Too many people have been buying 4k TVs with no HDR or really poor HDR lacking the minimum 1000Nits of brightness which is a shame as 4k really doesn't make much of a difference in comparison. HDR brings games to a whole new level.

In terms of games that I've played so far on it.

Halo 5 is easily the best showcase for 4k on either console so far.

Tomb Raider is ok, pretty poor really considering it's on the 1X. HIGH Frame rate mode is ruined by screen tear, HIGH pixel count and better graphics mode both suffer with a lot of slow down.
Not exactly what I was expecting out of this console

Gears 4 and Forza 7 both look amazing and perform great. Forza 7 almost alone makes X1 a worthy upgrade.

If you have plenty of spare cash or need the latest console and a 4K HDR TV then it's more than worth the purchase. It's a premium console that feels premium.

Already have a PS4 PRO? Then it gets really hard to recommend due to there being many worthy exclusives on Xbox and that doesn't look to change. There is barely an difference between the two that you'll tell by eye at first glance without going on digital foundry and watching their videos. However as time passes I'm sure that will change if only by a small amount.

That all said you're really not missing out on much by no upgrading if you decide to stick to your current consoles. These machines are all about making your games look cleaner, no jaggies anywhere and a few minor upgrades here and there. Some games have a higher frame rate but not many and that is unlikely to change due to the bottleneck that is the CPU.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back Microsoft

So it seems like Microsoft have done it. The Xbox is back and the problems of the original Xbox One launch can be partially erased. The Xbox One X (not to be confused with the 'vanilla' or the 'S' variants) is the newest and most powerful member of he Xbox One family and also of any console currently available. This is not fanboy-ism, just a fact based on the internals of the machines. I play with the console on a 4k HDR TV so am only qualified to talk about how it works on that sort of screen. By all accounts if you purchase it for a 'Full HD' TV (ie, 1080) screen you will get improvements too over the original Xbox One including supersampling and higher quality textures/improved frame rates.

I received the Project Scorpio edition. This is pretty much identical to the normal Xbox One X machine except it has some 'Project Scorpio' logos on the machine and control pad and has the vertical stand included. Otherwise it is the same machine as the normal Xbox One X. The machine itself is very sleek, much smaller than I expected, especially given that it now houses the power supply internally- so no more 'brick' lying on the floor. Also given this, the machine runs very quietly. Playing Forza 7 on 4k with HDR and the machine makes barely more than a whisper. I know the PS4 Pro is quiet, but at times that fans kicks on, I have yet to hear the console make a noise. If you have an Xbox One (or S), the user interface is the same so you have no new things to learn, aside from the fact Microsoft updated everything in the weeks prior to launch.

The real nitty gritty will be with the games. Obviously there is a fairly limited amount of games that take full advantage of the machine (especially 4k HDR stuff) but every game sees some basic improvements, even if just better frame rates due to the extra grunt in the machine. Forza 7 is very impressive, stunningly high resolution with HDR that flows very smoothly, it looks and feels like a next generation machine and my eyes roam the screen often meaning I miss apexes! Assassin's Creed Origins is also stunning. More games will make use of the extra power, but given the newness of the machine, be realistic about the number of games that will be fully optimised. But those that are, are stunning.

I do recommend this, not just to new Xbox owners but to existing One and One S users. Maybe when the price comes down it will be even more appealing, but this is an awesome machine and the price in a way reflects that. You are getting something however that is what the original Xbox One really should have been like. It is no longer the poor relation in the console war. Now Microsoft just needs to release more games that are exclusive to the machine.

The Xbox one X console is at the heart of pushing 4K gaming forward at a reasonable price to the masses.

Before i begin my review i must emphasis this is NOT a new generation console, This a mid gen refresh console of existing hardware albeit a much more powerful version of the Xbox one S. All existing games, accessories and peripherals from the Xbox one and Xbox one S family will seamlessly move over and work with the Xbox one X.

This Review is for the 'Project Scorpio' edition.

The console comes in a Textured pattern finish with the 'Project Scorpio' logo in green running horizontal along the left side of the console and the same logo appearing vertical down the middle of the controller, This special edition console also comes with a free vertical stand for the console included in the box. I must point out that the special color, Textured pattern and free vertical stand only comes in this package and is NOT included in the regular Xbox one X package.
A 4K TV with all the bells and whistles is excellent to use on this console, It brings forward and highlights the full benefits of Vivid colors for gaming and tv content such as the implementation of HDR (High dynamic range) however a 4K tv is NOT essential to take advantage of some of the benefits this console has to offer.

Enhanced Xbox one X games look stunning, these are patches to existing games that a developer has made specifically to take advantage of all that extra horse power under the hood so make sure to check out which games are supported by this.

One such benefit is Supersampling - Supersampling in a nutshell is taking higher resolution and texture content like 4K and and then outputting them to a 1080P screen which gives them a cleaner, crisp and vivid look and in short making all your current games and content look better than ever.
To summarize, here are my final impressions.
Pros:
⦁ 4K gaming looks amazing
⦁ 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc player built in for Movies and Tv content
⦁ Faster load times of gaming and apps, sometimes up to 50% faster
⦁ All games, content, and accessories from existing Xbox one hardware will work seamlessly.
⦁ Smaller , more compact hardware design that has a built in power supply unit with a single cord plug straight to your power outlet.
⦁ All games run and play smoother, Almost eliminating all issues associated with the start of this gen such as low resolution, Frame rate issues and other game graphic problems.

Cons :
⦁ Pricing for some can be a little expensive at £449
⦁ Massive game installs to take advantage of 4K games and textures packs sometimes results in 80GB+ downloads so this must be taken into consideration for customers on a download limit package from their ISP
⦁ No current VR support for games or TV content at the moment, Xbox have announced this will come later down the line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a console that can make my 4K OLED TV live up to its potential.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2017

Finally, what the Xbox One should have been & it's nice to see my 4K OLED TV finally living up to its potential.

First off, no matter what people say about "Why buy this, just build a PC!" - I've yet to see a £450 PC achieve anything close to what the Xbox One X can even before you include the 4K Bluray drive - short of buying used parts at a bargain price a rival PC isn't going to happen and even when it does you still have the endless 4K scaling issues that come with PCs right now.

I purchased the original Xbox One back when it released (Day One edition) and was never particularly impressed by it - very large/hollow plasticy feel and I even had to return my first one due to a rattling fan, I played it for about a year before my PC Masterrace genetics just wouldn't allow me to play it anymore... responsiveness of the UI was sluggish, and the visuals were quite low rent when compared to my PC at the time (which has since been upgraded)

Fortunately, with the X - the build is quite heavy & solid feeling, the visuals it pushes out are so far very much on par with my PC (@60hz) with none of the drawbacks and I'm utterly amazed at the lack of noise from the console in general - it pushes out a lot of heat (Enclosed users, keep this in mind!) but considering its pushing out 4K/HDR content it really makes an absolute minimal amount of noise, compared to that of my 1080GTX Laptop & 980Ti PC which sound like they were made by boeing, even compared to the original Xbox One which was fairly quiet the X puts it to shame, i'm amazed.

The only question we have right now is are developers going to support it properly - considering how many devs have gone back (right back to X360) titles to implement 4K/HDR I think we're on a good thing right now.

My only criticisms would be - the classic lack of rechargeable battery's included (its 2017/18!) & I think Microsoft has missed a trick by not including a Microphone array with the console to fill in the gap left by the demise of Kinect

5.0 out of 5 stars XBox One X-rated, it's hot!

It's been a while now, so I thought I have better get round to reviewing this console! Having had Xbox's since the Ps2, as I compared the two and there was only one winner. Let the fanboys start hating! Just compare the power, nothing comes close to this baby, from my original Xbox One Day One Edition the comparison is crazy, just play any first person shooter and this becomes obvious. No fogging, no popping up scenery from nowhere and quick loading times (except for online games obviously, as that I server space issues). The box itself is so much sexier that the original One, hence I guess that is why they called it the X, it certainly is X-rated! Just play RDR2 and you will see, the graphics are mind blowing, the Ps4 doesn't even come close. Chortle.
The controller has had a slight overall too, seems smoother and more responsive, also holds charge longer IMHO.
My only real issue is when hard powering off sometimes updates catch you on the backfoot, unless you leave it on standby. But who does that? Would be nice to get a notification via the app, so you can remotely turn box on and update, ah well. And let us not forget the 4k drive inbuilt, wow, just wow, console and 4k Blu-ray player, yes please.
Overall at nearly 3 years old, this is still the most powerful console in the world, pity the VR stuff was shelved, they missed a trick there, as wireless is the future unlike Pony fanboys and their love toy wired flashing dancing sticks.
Well recommended, Pony doesn't even come close, maybe next time suckers.
