5.0 out of 5 starsAn utterly godlike CPU.
Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018
Got this for a new gaming rig I was setting up. The first Amazon package came as an empty box. The CPU box had clearly been compromised at some point at the Amazon Warehouse (I'd have to assume) and it had no CPU inside, only the documentation. Amazon was quick to send me a new one, and it wasn't a huge setback since I was still awaiting the motherboard and case. Second package arrived just fine.

You know what you're paying for here. This is a really high performance CPU with the capability to be overclocked to your heart's content, and (while nothing is "future-proof") it should stay relevant for a few years to come. Paired with a nice GPU (1070 GTX in my case) it's able to run literally anything I throw at it. Shadow of the Tomb Raider can run with nearly all settings maxed out/at high. It blasted through most stress tests I threw at it, and managed to score a 1456 on Cinebench's CPU test, hitting only 71 deg C at most.

This CPU (obviously) comes with no dinky stock Intel cooler, so I'm using a Corsair H100i v2 for cooling here, and it pays off in BOUNDS. I can OC stable to 4.9GHz (what I have it running at now) and it runs cooler, both at idle and under load, than my last CPU did with its beefy Coolermaster heatsink/fan. Albeit, the radiator fans can get a bit noisy at times, but I've been tweaking my OC profiles to reduce noise and I've gotten the noise factor down a bit.

Overall, I'm immensely satisfied. This is the first time (since the days of the 8800 GTX) that I've had a "relevant" gaming PC, something that can actually run modern AAA titles, and my quality of life has improved drastically as a result. No more FPS drops when I try and watch Twitch while playing Overwatch. No more stuttering and lagging when the OS decides to run some CPU-intensive garbage in the background while I'm gaming. It's pretty amazing.

Here's the full build, for anyone interested. I wholeheartedly recommend this build to anyone looking to upgrade or build their first gaming PC, and it's relatively budget friendly compared to pre-built options, especially if you can snag some or all the parts on sale:
Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor
Corsair - H100i v2 70.69 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Asus - PRIME Z390-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Kingston - A400 120 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
EVGA - GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB SC Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card
NZXT - H500 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair - 850 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Whole build totaled out to about $1,300 after mail-in rebates.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot new, but works

Not complaining too much because I did get it on sale, but this was definitely used to some degree. Fir starters, the small package was put into the large shipping box with ZERO filler, so it was shaken around a bunch. The product box seal was opened, clearly cut a d opened. There was a small amount of thermal paste on the outer edge of the processor and the little sticker that you peel off to put on your tower was stuck crooked to the instruction manual. Works and is an upgrade from what we had, but don't advertise new if you are selling used.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great and no issues with it for my build

I will go into in-depth detail on any item since other popular reviews have given excellent information, so in quick summary:
My Build (all components work flawlessly):
1. Zalman ATX Mid Tower Case R1 (Nice looking case, provides room for everything, adequate cooling and allows good cable management).

2. ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-H GAMING LGA1151 DDR4 HDMI DVI M.2 Z370 ATX Motherboard with Gigabit LAN and USB 3.1 for 8th Generation Intel Core Processors (Great expandability and room for future upgrades, enough USB ports for most applications).

3. EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti GAMING, 8GB GDDR5, EVGA OCX Scanner OC, White LED, DX12OSD Support (PXOC) Graphics Card 08G-P4-5670-KR (Great balance of price and performance).

4. Intel Core i7-8700 Desktop Processor 6 Cores up to 4.6GHz Turbo LGA1151 300 Series 65W BX80684i78700 (Came with a thermal solution (fan) but I used the Cooler Master - see below).

5. 2 of Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD - CT500MX500SSD1(Z) (Man this is fast, Win10 boots in about 5/6 secs. and programs open fast as well).

6. Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA M.2 Type 2280SS Internal SSD - CT500MX500SSD4

7. CORSAIR TX Series TX850M 850W 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply (Adequate power supply for into the future and has ample connectors).

8. Corsair LPX 32GB DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit for DDR4 Systems (Adequate for my application for work and gaming)

9. Cooler Master Hyper RR-212E-20PK-R2 LED CPU Cooler with PWM Fan, Four Direct Contact Heat Pipes (Instructions are poor, system builders with experience will have no problem, first timers will eventually figure it out. Comes with all you need including thermal paste).

10. ASUS MX239H 23-Inch, Full HD 1920x1080 IPS, Audio by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower HDMI VGA Frameless Monitor (Really nice monitor for the price though those heavy gamers will want something far superior. Built in Audio is good enough for You Tube and regular use, but I personally find its not so good for Netflix, look at some decent speakers based on your needs).

11. Sabrent 74-In-1 3.5" Internal Flash Media Card Reader/writer with USB Port , Black (CR-USNT) (For the cost and convince you can’t go wrong).

12. Asus DRW-24B1ST-KIT 24x Internal DVD Burner + Nero 12 Essentials Burning Software + Sata Cable Kit (Obsolete in some ways but good to have at times as some persons still give work items on CD).

13. Backlit Gaming Mouse, Gaming Keyboard, Large Gaming Mouse Pad, PC Computer Gaming Headset with Microphone Combo, S101-BA Redragon RGB LED Backlit 104 Key Gaming Keyboard with Wrist Rest (No issues at all, good feel and responsiveness and mouse drivers are available on the website. The headset sounds good).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CPU!
Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019

I got an Alienware Aurora R4 years ago with an i7-4820k. I now refuse to settle for anything less than an i7, even though I'd really like an i9 (although I think an i10 is coming). The "k" in my old CPU pretty much means it's one you can overclock, but I'm "old school." I'm not used to over clocking and I remember when it was risky and perhaps not worth it. Overclocking may still reduce the life of your CPU and I want my CPU to last as long as it possibly can. However, it seems easier now, less risky, and can unlock your CPU to give you it's peak performance. However, I decided I didn't really want to spend more than $300 on any component for my new PC that I built, so I went with this CPU. Maybe I don't need an i7, but I like plenty of power so that I can play whatever video game I want (especially new ones). Since I'm still not interested in over clocking, I decided to get the non-"k" version of this one and I don't regret it. Higher end Intel CPUs are more (too) expensive and this one felt like a good fit for the budget I gave myself. I currently have no regrets buying this CPU. Although it's a 3.2GHz CPU, CPUID's HWMonitor is telling me that it's running at almost 4.3Ghz. Windows Task Manager tells me it's running at or around 4GHz. I still think that's impressive! I have monitored it while gaming and it doesn't even seem to get overloaded (nor hot), which surprises me, too. Maybe I haven't monitored it enough or looked at it while playing something that is definitely extremely CPU intensive, but I'm still impressed. When I built this new PC, I used a Corsair AIO water cooler for the CPU in my old PC and moved it to this new one. Unfortunately that AIO failed too suddenly and my CPU reached 100c! Luckily, I still had the stock air fan that came with the CPU, which I used while my new water cooler arrived. I was actually impressed that the stock air fan kept the CPU at reasonable temperatures even while gaming. Actually, I think the CPU is idling at the same temp w/ the water cooler as it did the stock air fan. I strongly recommend this CPU, unless you have more money for a later model (including an i9) and must overclock your CPU. I play video games all the time, watch YouTube and listen to music. I may not be using my CPU to it's fullest potential, but I love it, it works great and I cannot see any reason why a different (newer) CPU would be necessary (for my use case anyway).

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to overclock and runs fast
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2019

My second computer build i decided to build with Intel this time and it has been a much easier process to setup and overclock. I purchased the 8700K when it was new more than a year ago and have been using it since.

Coming out of the box already running at 4.7GHZ on all cores is super impressive. I have always been a hound for speed so this makes it easy for me. Overclocking is a snap with Intel's easy overclocking utility that comes with alot of tools for stability testing as well. I tended to use Intels software for benchmark runs, and my Motherboard software for daily driving overclock.
Now not every chip is the same and even if you have an 8700k, you may not see the same performance that i have been lucky to achieve. It's called the silicon lottery for a reason and I think I just got lucky. My Results are as such: highest Overclock achieved was 5.3 GHz on all cores. no problems and it worked just fine. For normal use i leave it at a nice and round 5 GHz and temps have not gone past 55c with a corsair AIO liquid cooler. So temps dont get hot, and it overclocks and is happy to sit there with no problem. I really dont know what else i could ask for since 6 cores/12 threads is more than enough for any workload i currently throw at it. In all gaming performance, i have not encountered any issues that are CPU related. Overall i couldnt be happier with my CPU.

Pros:
High Clock Speed
Easy to overclock
12 Threads

Cons:
At time of writing is more expensive than a 9700K

5.0 out of 5 stars Great processor
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2023

I used to have this processor around 2018. A few years down the line, I decided to upgrade to an i9-9900k. I can tell you that if you're just a gamer and/or don't do heavy video editing, upgrading to an i9 is just not worth it. The extra amount of money to dish out compared to the slight performance increase is just not worth it. Because of my motherboard, I couldn't overclock my i9 to its max without constantly crashing. The safe overclock limit ended up being weaker than this i7 @ 4.7GHz. Long story short, stick to this processor if you plan on upgrading to the 9th gen 9900k.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and fun build to 5.1GHz with temps at 62C under full load thanks to delid and Kraken
Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2017
Size: ProcessorStyle: Core i7-8700KVerified Purchase
Bought this on Oct 6., was finally delivered on Nov. 5. I had been buying parts since July and really was excited once I knew it had shipped so I was ready to do the mods I wanted to before turning on the first time. With the CPU out of its box and ready for action, I immediately delidded with Rock-It kit. Cleaned off Intel's TIM and replaced with Phobya liquid metal. Resealed with Rock-It kit and black RTV leaving the extra spot for heat expansion that you'll see once you delid. Let dry overnight and NOW came the time to build exactly just one month after ordering.

Placed an ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming K6 into a very nice Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX Glass (I have bought Phanteks for my last two builds and this case has impressed me beyond what I could have expected). Next, I placed the CPU into the board and installed a Kraken x62 (with replaced fans using 4, Corsair ML140 in push/pull) for cooling. I decided to go with Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut between the 8700K and the x62 . Of course, at this point I wanted to boot to see how things looked temp wise but the rest of the build remained and at least we all know some fun was still to be had. So, off to installing a Samsung 960 M.2 for Windows and two Crucial BX300 - 480GB in RAID 0 for games along with a Seagate 4TB for bulk storage. An EVGA 1000 SuperNOVA G3 80Plus Gold went in for power as it would need to help deliver power to all these goodies along with an ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1080Ti 11GB Gaming for Battlefield1 ... CoD4, DiRT 4, GTAV, and some of my other recent favorites.

My RAM choice was the G.Skill Trident RGB 32GB 3600.G.Skill 3600 and they slid in without issue.

First boot finally!!!! Into the BIOS I dived to check temps and set up the RAID and memory XMP. With the Kraken I was idling at 26, so I set up the RAID and went on to install windows/drivers/updates along with all the CAM software for the Kraken and NZXT Fans.

A quick reboot just to make sure everything was nice and smooth, which it was (phew), so one more reboot into BIOS to try for a pretty aggressive first OC. I pushed the 8700K to 5.1 GHz and pushed the G.Skill to 4133. Save changes, reboot, palms sweaty hoping I had maybe got a little lucky in the silicon lottery and would end up with a nice fast and quiet machine.

SUCCESS, as I easily went Into windows. Launched Prime95, full Torture Test with MAX LOAD... temperatures of... 62C!!!!! Same temperatures were seen in Heaven as I played with the OC on the 1080 and even saw a 1 degree drop with some linpack testing.

Looking at other reviews, it looks like delidding worked for me in this setup and I am glad I did it. Because of the temps, the fans on the Kraken are barely audible along with the other case fans.

Needless to say, this thing hums along nicely at 5.1 GHz with the RAM at 4133. Gaming is an absolute joy and day-to-day operations move with ease and fluidity. I am very happy with this CPU among all the other goodies and highly recommend it. If you decide to delid it, I wish you luck (just take your time) and great temp reduction.
