Small but Powerful - Exceptional Sound Quality

The M3 is the newest addition to my growing B&O Family. I think to many people Audio and Sound is extremely personal, with everyone having their taste in what sounds perfect to their ear. The Beoplay M3 melds into many styles of sound to best suits the room and listener.

I have one in my bathroom & bedroom as they are perfectly suited for smaller spaces. Packing incredible clarity, crisp base, and an overall sophisticated undistorted room filling sound... This speaker is sure to impress.

I highly recommend using the B&O app where FLAC quality Deezer is native to the app and allows for a seamless B&O designed experience. I use the actual Deezer app separately as well.

Bang and Olufsen is known to make products that sound very good. That being said, this speaker (although not very large) has excellent sound quality and is easily able to fill noise in most rooms. The only downside is that if you have multiple WiFi networks (more than 10) where you live there could be the possibility of hearing static when using the speaker through Bluetooth capabilities. I would recommend using aux to combat this if you have this issue. Deftthink this speaker can be sold for less but the price isn’t too outrageously bad for the quality you’re recieving.

good audio bad connectivity and app

I was really looking forward to getting this speaker, upon receiving the speaker I had intentions to use it with my desktop as it was just the right size. It seems to get this thing to work properly you must use it through the proprietary bang and Olufson app, I had a lot of issues connecting this with my desktop blue tooth. it would connect just fine but would not play audio as it was stuck in some sort of standby mode. every time I would switch from headphone audio to my speaker it would not work, I would have to re-plug the speaker from its power just to get it to produce audio. Once I got audio working music was good, any videos I tried to play audio through this speaker whether on my phone or computer was always delayed 3-4 seconds and would not line up with the playing video. In the end, I believe the app needed to use this is pretty useless as well as connectivity with the standby mode.

0 stars for the documentation. 1 star for the app. 5 stars for the web interface. 4 stars for the speaker. Hours of frustration resulted in an email to the customer support for Bank & Olefsen. The documentation is 50+ pages and 10 languages and both incomplete and incomprehensible. The app proved to serve no purpose other than assigning an IP to the unit. I cannot say enough bad things about both the documentation and the app. The online resources are unfortunately worse. The speaker was purchased as a computer speaker and so the Bluetooth and 3.5MM connectivity were important features. Other similar products have both Bluetooth and 3.5MM but the connections via Bluetooth stops working as expected with the latest update from Microsoft and the 3.5MM connection ceased to function after 10-20 minutes of use for no good reason.

The setup of the M3 speaker via the app was relatively straight forward with the exception of the name change of the device to a less cryptic name. With each name change the unit would cease to be connected to the app and no amount of effect would reconnect the unit to the app. Bluetooth is a good method of connection but a few visits to news sites and a few visits to video sites and I noted a huge audio lag. In turn I connected the unit via 3.5MM and noticed the exact same huge audio lag. Huge is a relative term but an obvious audio lag for a $300 speaker is not a good thing. I tried multiple computers and multiple cables and multiple web sites without resolution. And so emailed customer support with the intention of returning the unit the next day. The customer support response included an adjustment in the settings to toggle the "disable delay" for line-in connections. Oddly enough the customer support response did not mention the required web interface to actually adjust the setting. Regardless a new world awaited me after I found the web interface via the IP address of the unit. The network devices on the Windows 10 system listed the M3 and the details listed the IP address. The web interface included endless options to adjust the unit.

Via the web interface,
* adjusted the disable delay to eliminate the audio lag for line-in connections
* set the volume to a set volume providing control of the volume to the computer and not the speaker. Endless frustration ceased as the unit was extremely quiet despite changing the volume settings on the computer. I set the volume on the speaker to 70 and set the volume on the computer to 15 for standard listening .
* changed the name of the unit from a cryptic name to M3 with the option to manage the unit on the app also. The name change on the app proved to be non-functional.

Based on the experience the setup required both an Android phone and a Windows 10 computer to complete the setup. The speaker serves as a computer speaker. The speaker is small enough and nice enough for the office environment.

Unfortunately the effort associated with the setup completely overshadowed the speaker aspects of the unit. The unit is one small nice looking unit with sufficient good sound to eliminate the current other setup.

Comparing the other two that are similar, (Sonos, Bose) quality of sound is most important. The B&O is a much better sounding speaker. Bottom end especially, mids are better and highs much better. the only thing I would like is a remote. The small Bose is the only one that has a remote.

Only reason taken away 1 star due to bluetooth connection lag, but no really a deal breaker if just care about the sound quality, which is superb. Initial setup was fairly simple but somehow it said firmware update failed.
