5.0 out of 5 starsAwesome upgrade from the original fire stick
Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2019
I have the original fire stick and I love it. I have 2 TVs, 1 in my living room and 1 in my bedroom. Because I love the original fire stick (gift from my son ❤) I finally decided to get a 2nd for my bedroom. I bought this upgraded fire stick on Prime Day. I got it yesterday. I'm amazed that the remote can link to my TV and control the TV. I read from other reviewers that it powers on their TV. If this is true, then I will be ecstatic. My TV remote is HUGE and I hate it. The TV was built in 2006 so the TV and remote are huge. Both work great. I was originally going to just use my Chromecast as I love the casting from room to room without losing my place. However, since the fire stick remote controls the TV I am rethinking my thoughts. I was amazed that the fire stick was soooooo easy to set up. It recognized my Wi-Fi ID and my password for the WI-FI. I did not need to give the code. I think that it picked up all the information that the original fire stick has, including Wi-Fi information. This makes the upgraded fire stick the easiest set up ever. I also noticed that the speed of the processor is incredible. Not once have I noticed any buffering. I do get buffering from my other 3 devices. Guess it's time to replace my original fire stick with this one. This fire stick replaced my Roku which I've had for years and still works fine. The reason why I replace the Roku was that Roku seems to be incompatible with Hulu Live (love it BTW). It keeps shutting off the program that i am watching making me yo go back into my Hulu account again. Just imagine, you're watching a show and just at the most interesting part, it flicks and goes back to the home screen. Ahhhhh!!!! Since this fire stick performs so well, I'm thinking of not even using my 2 Chromecasts anymore. Now that's progress! The 2 Chromecasts do have some lagging and that's why I'm thinking of just using the fire stick and buying a new one for the living room. If anyone was on the fence about buying this fire stick, don't be. This purchase was well worth the money. Go for it!! I was going to upgrade my internet because I thought the lagging was them, nope. This fire stick has out performed my wildest dreams. Go buy this, fire stick you won't be sorry!! Oh one last thing, I've noticed that some reviewers have complained about opening up the battery case. It's actually easy, you simply press dojwn on the circle at the top and push the cover to the opposite side. You will hear a little pop. That's releasing the lock. Then you will see a small space where the circle is, just stick your fingernail (presuming your nail is not so bitten to the point where it's below the nail line) and push. Easy peasy! Amazon clearly have their products hooked up! I love the ease of Amazon, hands down. ❤. If my opinion changes about the upgraded fire stick, I'll post an update.

UPDATE: Its very easy to navigate the fire stick but if you can't find something all you have to do is ask Alexa and she will find it for you. It also fully takes charge of your TV. There is nothing you need With the original clunky remote. Unless you want to access your HDMI ports. But with all that the fire stick offers, you don't need another dongle. I will be using the fire stick only. It's so wonderful to use one small, comprehensive remote. Basically Amazon has updated the fire stick to make it a universal remote. Now I'm going to buy a remote cover so I can easily see my new "universal" remote in the dark. ❤😎

I purchased a second Fire Stick from a big box store. I'm sorry that I did. When you buy a Fire Stick through Amazon, they load it with your account information making set up super easy. When you buy one through the box box stores they are generic and set up was a bit more difficult. Suggestion folks but your Fire Stick through Amazon and forget the big box stores! Wish I would have known this before I purchased my second one! Never again!!

3.0 out of 5 starsNo Kindle book reader. Low memory, not room for many apps. Great for Amazon Prime Video!
Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2020
Pros:

* Apps run well. It’s a pleasure to use this for Amazon Prime Video! Easy to see what is available and to navigate the app. Being able to do X-ray while the movie is playing is pretty cool.
* The built-in IMDB app is pretty good. Lots of good shows there. Good thing since it can’t be uninstalled.
* Internet browser is ok. Have to use the remote so it’s a little clunky, but it works. But can’t use it to load up the Kindle web reader app! I tried! :(
* I have an Echo, a couple of Dots and also Alexa-connected Phillips Hue house lighting. The Alexa integration on the the remote is great. I use it all the time for the lights. Also, when you use the remote to ask for the weather, it briefly flashes on the TV. Thanks to this, I was able to turn off the mic on the TV Room Dot. So that means less chance TV sound will accidentally wake up Alexa...Yay!
* Fire TV initial setup asked me what brand TV I have, and set up the correct power, volume and mute controls on the Fire TV remote. Nice touch.

Cons

*No Kindle App. You give me Freetime & Gamecircle that I’ll never use and yet there’s no Kindle app. The Kindle Keyboard device is the thing that first got me to Amazon, back when all they did was books. That’s their original thing and yet you don’t give me a Kindle app on the Fire TV? What a missed opportunity, Amazon! I’m trying to stay away from small screens as much as possible to keep eye strain to a minimum, and the Fire Stick obviously works fine for reading WaPo, so where is the thinking on no Kindle app? Amazon wake up. Give us our Kindle books. Lol.

*Low Memory. I would love to try The Great Courses Plus or even HBO, or Acorn but I don’t think I could run more than one of them. By the time I installed Netflix, YouTube, WaPo, the Internet Browser and MSNBC, and a couple of small utilities, I didn’t have a lot of memory left. I know Android requires operating memory. Missed opportunity, but thanks for making room for Gamecircle and Freetime. ;)

*WaPo app is limited to a few free stories. It will not let me log in to my account so that I can have the full news like the full app on my phone will give me. Doesn’t the Fire Stick run on Android? Wouldn’t it be worth the time to convert the Android version over? People like me that have to wear readers would love to be able to take them off and read the news across the room. That’s another missed opportunity for Amazon!

Additional thoughts:

I guess I was spoiled by having a Roku. It’s an old one, I bought it in 2012 but I never had storage problems. Even now that it’s 8 years old, I have 22 apps on it and no memory problems. Really the only reason I bought this Fire Stick is because Amazon Prime Video and the YouTube app both run so slow on my old Roku. They have become bigger and slower as more features were added and sometimes they actually cause the Roku to restart. The newer Rokus have a faster processor, so I was going to get a new Roku, but then I saw this on sale with a promo code for half price. I know how Android requires operating memory, but I noticed that this HD version had the same 8 gb memory as the 4K one, so I figured if that’s what they would use in the higher priced one, I’d be ok. I didn’t count on so many Amazon apps bloating the device. I never intend to play games, I don’t have kids, I use Google photos for pictures, etc etc. Why can’t I delete these unused apps? It’s not like Amazon is receiving any financial gain from them mandatorily taking up space? If I had more room I’d be signing up for HBO and The Great Courses Plus at the very least...but again, Amazon shoots themselves in the foot by not giving us enough memory. I’d even pay a little extra for more memory but you don’t give that option.

So, I’m keeping my Roku hooked up and I’ll use it for the apps it does ok on...

Maybe by conserving operating memory on the stick, I could try out HBO, PBS or The Great Courses, and hopefully not have memory issues like some have reported. I don’t imagine I could run all three of them though. :(

I just don’t understand why there aren’t more reviews talking about this. All those people using HBO and other channels along with Netflix, Hulu, etc. why aren’t they talking about having memory problems? I know this will be lost in a sea of reviews but I hope someone does read it and finds it helpful! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars What Can I Say... I LOVE my Amazon Devices
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2020

This replaces my Fire Pendant and I am so happy with this new device and it's performance.

1. Super easy to setup and my soundbar was instantly connected. Clear, sharp picture and sound. Remember when things are loading for the first time, it might run a little slow, but once done you should be running just fine.
2. So pleased that now I can control volume and power on and off the tv. You do not need to do anything to make this happen, the stick does the work.

3. Alexa feature is so great to not have to look through pages and pages of "stuff" to find what you want. If new to Alexa, just press the mic button and ask Alexa what is our weather today or how much does an elephant weigh. So simple, now ask Alexa: Play Masterpiece Theater and she will display results for you to choose from. Now some of the add on Apps do not support Alexa yet, but many do. Alexa can do a lot of things. Play with it, you are not going to break her. HINT: If I am looking for a specific show and no results with Alexa, I just simply go on line and search...Where can I watch The Untouchables and you can get results on the web.

4. ***** This stick WILL NOT WORK if you have your modem set to 5GHz. You need to lower that number. Call your provider for help or search the internet for how to do. Your Home screen will come up on the TV, but the device is not going to work properly. If you try and play something and it just buffers endlessly check out the modem speed. If you select to download an app and it just will not load is another sign the 5GHz needs to be changed to a lower number. Does not affect my screen quality at all at 2.4 . ( I had this problem when I setup my stick and then remembered seeing a post about this which sure helped me.)

5. Many are confused about what you can watch on the Fire Stick. Think of the stick as a doorway into a big reception/lobby. Sign over long endless hallway marked FREE CHANNELS and USE... go down that hall and find the APP you want and install. Most of these are not ad free. Another long endless hallway is marked PREMIUM CHANNELS and these are the paid subscription channels/apps. Find what you want... load the APP and then register with the channel (Netflix, Hule, Vudu, ect). Most of them just simply sign you up with your Amazon account and the monthly charge is automatically is done through Amazon. For some, you will have to go to a website that will be on your tv screen and enter a code so the company (Netflix, ex. ) recognizes your tv or device.

5. Be sure and try out Amazon's IMBd for free movies, tv shows and more. The ads are fast and do not bother me at all. Great free content.

6. If you receive a Fire Device and it is not working properly ... Call customer support first before posting a scathing review. They will make it right. Not fair or helpful when people post negative things about the product when not taking to time to find a possible solution. Many problems can be solved simply by searching the web for an answer.

7. I was not paid nor received anything from Amazon to post this. Just reading through posts and problems people are having and the fix is usually so simple.

So many said they had not tried Alexa, when it is just the simplest thing ever to do to push the mic button and ask a question or give a command. Think Suri intelligence. Makes finding what you want so much easier. Ask her to play rock music or your fav music or My Music (from your Amazon account) and BOOM the music is playing.

This stick is so worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Successful Experiment
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2019

I bought a Fire TV Stick in a pre-Prime Day sale for $15. I wasn't really sure if I wanted or needed it but, at that price, I decided to experiment. Up until now, I have been streaming using the apps on my Tivo (which I still love). Lately however, it has been acting up...breaking the streaming approximately every 6hr with error messages suggesting inadequate internet bandwidth. I subscribe at the low end of bandwidth available (~20Mb/sec) so that's a real possibility but after trying different things (mostly rebooting everything I own) I was starting to suspect the Tivo and wondered if an alternative might work better.

The Fire TV Stick was chosen based on decent Consumer Reports ratings as well as user ratings with the low sale price pushing me over the edge. I also like the compact size which will readily allow me to remove it and take it with me when I travel. I chose the basic (though most current) model rather than the 4K because I still have a 1080p TV and don't intend to update it any time soon. (I have an old plasma TV that looks so good that I don't plan on changing it until it dies...or bigger OLED TVs get cheap enough that I can't stand it.)

Anyway, back to the Fire TV Stick. In short, it is very nearly perfect. Installation was very easy - in my case, I had to use the included "extender" that pushes the Fire TV Stick away from crowded HDMI junctions on the back of my TV. Use is also easy though I tend to just use the controller directly as opposed to voice control. I bought my first Alexa at the same time and while I like it, I'm not entirely used to it yet. What voice commands I have tried with the Fire TV Stick have worked fine.

Actual streaming has been very good. Overall, I've probably streamed over 30 hours at this point without a single interruption. The picture quality is very good...but interesting. I believe that I am streaming at 1080p and believe that my Tivo was streaming at 1080i (sometimes 720p). I'm one of the people who notice the difference between 1080i and 1080p so very much like the increased level of resolution that I am seeing but have noticed a kind of grainy quality to the picture that I've never noticed before. It's not bad or off-putting but different and interesting. I've pretty much been binging one show though so it's possible that it is a characteristic of the original that is being streamed.

The only thing that I don't like as well as I'd like to is the menu structure which is similar to but not identical to what would come up on my Tivo. Neither is perfect...both are perfectly manageable.

One other thing I've noticed by accident and really appreciate. I have a tendency to multi-task (e.g., reading FaceBook or the newspaper) while I watch TV...like 90% of other people. Every once in a while, I'll get so engrossed in what I'm reading that I pause the stream so I don't miss anything. After a couple of minutes, the Fire TV Stick automatically goes into a screen saver mode flashing up gorgeous pictures from around the world. A cool thing that I haven't tried (but will today) is that you can apparently load some of your own pictures into Amazon photos (I know, giving up even more of your privacy) and use your own photos for the screen saver. You don't have to but it's kind of a nice option to have.

Anyway, for what I was viewing as a potentially throw-away experiment, I am extremely pleased and highly recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Streaming Device!!
Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2020

The first portion of this review is of other streaming devices, so if you just wanna know about this one, skip down!

COMPARSON- I have used Roku, Apple, Chromecast, and the Amazon firestick, and none of the other even come close to this one. All of these devices cost about the same, but this one is far superior to each and every one. Roku almost always glitches, remotes stop working out of no where, not to mention they can be brand new with various issues right out of the package. Whatever streaming device Apple has works fine, but there is no home button, so anytime you want to do anything, you press back until you get to the home page... Such a pain. I also feel this one isn't very user friendly. Personally, I don't like Comcast because it requires I use 2 devices at once, and what's the point in that?? I've never owned it though, so can't give much issue with that device.

FIRESTICK REVIEW- So I've actually owned several models of this device. I believe it was about 3 years ago, my parents bought the 1st generation device and it was awesome! Installation took less than 2 minutes, and was super easy. It's the same for this one as well. (I don't see a generation on this one, but the one we bought all those years ago didn't even have a volume control button! I don't even think it's available these days, ha!) Anyways, my entire family loved the device, and this one shares all the best features! Super easy to use, you can install and uninstall apps easily, stay logged in on all your apps, and if you're looking for a movie, you can simply search it on the home page & it'll tell you every app that movie appears on EVEN when that app isn't installed on your device! For example, we wanted to see Hunger Games, so I searched it on the home page, and found it on Tubi for free- an app I hadn't even installed yet. So I got to see my movie for free, found a new great app I had never used before, and didn't have any hassle trying to search around for my movie!

So the current model I have is great. All the best features of the previous model plus a volume control button! I love being able to mute my ads, and it's so nice to use the same remote to function my tv. I cannot stress how much I love the home button! Super easy to get back to all my apps. Additionally, its a super fast device. Everything runs great and quickly. All of which, as mentioned above, does not exist altogether in any other streaming device.

Here are some things that aren't super important, but I appreciated greatly. First, they gave me everything I needed for set up, including instructions. That being the device, a cord to plug it into the wall. the remote, and batteries for the remote. I also got a free year of Food Network! Additionally, this packaging was very low waste. Practically no plastic at all, minimal amount of material used, and most of it was a sturdy paper. As a girl who appreciates packaging (usually for make up,) I was surprisingly impressed!

Con- I don't find this a con, but I'll put it anyways. The first device lasted 3 years until it stopped working. To me, for the original $20, that was awesome! I'm not sure how long this new one will last, but the last one my parents gave me and they used it every single day for hours at a time- between watching movies and streaming music, we definitely got our money's worth. I'm currently at college, and so we both own this model, and so far, we still love it!

Great price for a great product, worth every cent!

PS- I do not use the Alexa feature, personally, so I am unable to add that to my review. I can say though, it super easy to turn it off if you need to, as I have accidentally turned it on before!

4.0 out of 5 stars For $15.00 It's well worth the price
Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2019

I bought this during Prime Days so I only paid $15 for it. I already had 3 different types of Rokus that I never used anymore because I watch all my TV apps through my Xbox One S. So that is what I am comparing my experience with the Fire Stick to.

Here's what I like:
- The picture quality is excellent, especially with Hulu.
- The remote is small but efficient so it's easier than using my Xbox controller to navigate menus.
- The $15.00 price tag was well worth the money, but I wouldn't pay full price for this.
- When I'm lonely, I can ask Alexa if she likes me. (She thinks I'm magnificent).
- The IMDB channel. OMG. I never knew such a thing existed! It's awesome. If you want to find all the films you like with a certain actor, you just have to find a movie that they were in with someone on your screen. Example: they suggest a row of films. I haven't found a search option, so it's like the 6-degrees of Kevin Bacon game. So say I want to find Angelina Jolie movies. Well, there's A River Runs Through it in this film row, so you click on that film and it shows you every actor in the film on a vertical bar... now you click Brad Pitt, and it shows you ever film Pitt was in on a horizontal bar... then you scroll to Mr. and Mrs. Smith and you've found Angie, who now appears on the vertical bar, with her films appearing on the horizontal bar. So it's like a trivia game in a way, but the IMDB graph is really interesting. I ended up watching several films that way without meaning to do anything other than check out the channel.
Here's what I don't like
- The screensaver function stops at a certain point and goes to a black screen so it's not really saving your screen. It doesn't matter if you're using your own photos or the amazon screensaver - it ends after a few minutes and leaves you on a black screen.
- The screensaver overrides the Netflix screensaver
- Once the screensaver comes on, your program is no longer waiting for you underneath it. When you push any button on the remote to stop the screensaver (assuming it's still actually running), you are taken to the home screen, so then you have to open the app you were last watching, navigate the landing screen, home page, episode page, and finally you are back watching your show again. It's a labor-intensive and time-consuming inconvenience that I do not enjoy. I have ADHD, so I frequently stop shows in the middle to google something or make a snack, or just aimlessly walk around. Sometimes I'm gone for a minute, other times I'm gone for an hour. I would like to just go right back into my program and not have to go through all these login screens again.
- They do not offer the Vudu Channel. This is where 1200 of the films I own exist and I'm used to watching thrm through VUDU. For the longest time Amazon refused to be a part of UVVU, however now that the service no longer exists, I believe Amazon has finally integrated with moviesanywhere.com which makes this fact irrelevant. Still, I'd prefer to have the option to shop Vudu sales and compare to amazon prices - and amazon fire does not allow me to do that, so I still have to turn on the xbox and go to the Vudu app there in order to see how much they charge for the same movie that amazon has.

In summary, it's a nice little device that provides a good picture and easy navigation, but it's lacking in app options and the screensaver needs to be improved.

5.0 out of 5 stars The smartER TV choice!
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020

I’m so excited about this little invention! My daughters TV is actually getting pretty old, I thought there might have been some install issues but there were NONE. It was flawless from start to finish.
For reference she’s got my old Dynex TV that I have had for close to ten years. We previously relied on a DVD player with built in streaming. I couldn’t tell you how old it is, but it’s definitely getting up there in age. It takes forever to load up, lags in speed, and doesn’t even access many apps (Hulu and Amazon Prime Video being my bigger gripes).

I told my husband it was time to either upgrade her to a smart TV or update the DVD/streamer. Both are expensive upgrades and I’ve convinced myself to keep this TV until it literally gives out.
I struggle to consider her own personal TV a need, it’s definitely a luxury to have one in her room. She’s almost six. You can understand my hesitation in spending $100+ with either of the aforementioned options.

Enter the Amazon Fire TV, on sale for $30! I told my husband this would be a great fix for our dilemma, and if it wasn’t everything I dreamt of, at least it was on sale.

This thing is AMAZING! Fast. User friendly interface. Smart. SUPER SMART. Installing the Disney+ App prompted me to simply open my app on my iPad and press a button to log us in on the TV.
Even as old as that TV is, the Fire Stick had no issues with compatibility, or unpopular branding, to sync with the remote for controlling the TV power and volume.
My daughter can now use a single remote to do anything she needs to! Playing her DVDs is so rare these days that we didn’t worry about replacing the old and slow DVD player.

She LOVES talking to Alexa, and feels like such a big girl with her remote. I’m ordering her a glow in the dark cover and I couldn’t believe how happy it made her. She is able to access shows from various apps by just asking, rather than remembering which show is attached to which app, or worry about spelling the titles in a search bar.

The streaming quality is top notch. If I ever add a TV to my own room, a Fire Stick is a must!

Although there are already 9,000 plus reviews and no one will ever read this, I think it's worth noting how easy it is to setup the remote to power on not only the television but accessories as well. Remember those code books from days gone by where you had to enter a number of codes to get a remote to work with a receiver, or a sound bar? This thing does the work for you. It EASILY sets up to work both my TV and my SOUND BAR. The fact that my TV is one brand and my sound bar is another is no problem. I love not having to fish for 3 different remote controls whenever I want to watch Amazon Prime or Netflix.

I have an older smart TV and Hulu doesn't work that great on it for some reason and there was no integration to add apps to the Smart functions so when Disney+ came out and Verizon gave me a free year of the service I figured it was time to get a new TV. Well my wife thought we should just get a fire stick instead because it's $35 instead of $400 for a new TV. I even managed to get a bundle with a 3rd Gen Echo Dot for all of $7 more so why not?

A couple of magical things happened here. The new Echo dot was somehow able to force the rest of my Echos to work again. They had quit working nearly a year ago and after setting up the new one I gave the old ones another shot and *poof* they woke up and worked as if they knew they were about to be binned by this new replacement. Pretty sure there actually isn't any correlation here but I choose to believe! Also the television can somehow get a strong enough WiFi signal to the Firestick to play Hulu no problem at all magically despite the TV itself being on the exact same network and having issues with that app. The final bonus though was that Plex has an app on Fire Stick so now I can take my entire media server and simply stream it through the Fire Stick instead of having to use a Raspberry Pi as a "media center PC" on my home television. Bonus points because that means I can now pull my Pi off the TV and go back to doing dumb experiments with it instead of having it run as a dedicated VLC player.

The Alexa voice remote is a nice touch. I like that you can talk to it, and somehow despite being within range of my other echo devices they know which one I'm talking to which is pretty cool. You can turn off the television using voice command to the remote which is pretty neat, and you can mess with your pets by whispering simon says "pet name come here" to the remote from another room and the Fire Stick will repeat your command from the TV which really screws with them. I mean who doesn't want to confuse their fluffy puppy dog because it's amusing? That's some quality entertainment value added there since I don't have to speak loud enough for my pet to know it's me which is something you can't do with a basic echo or echo dot. Next level stuff here guys. I wonder if I can drop in on one of my echos from my TV remote... Look the possibilities of being an immature adult are endless folks just buy one of these things. Plus it can order you pizza which is a bonus because then you don't even have to get up off the couch. Now if only our robot overlords and our saviour Jeff Bezos could make us a robot that would answer the door and bring the pizza to the couch...

The Fire TV Stick streaming device with Alexa built in is a game-changer for my entertainment setup. It's the latest release, and it has quickly become an integral part of my home entertainment system.

With the Alexa Voice Remote, navigating through my favorite shows and movies is a breeze. The voice control feature adds a whole new level of convenience to my streaming experience. I can simply ask Alexa to find a specific movie, play my favorite music, or even check the weather without lifting a finger.

The HD quality of the Fire TV Stick ensures that I enjoy crystal-clear visuals, making movie nights at home feel like a cinematic experience. It seamlessly connects to my TV, and the setup was hassle-free.

I love the fact that it opens up a world of entertainment options, from popular streaming services to a wide range of apps and games. It's like having a mini-computer for my TV, and it keeps my family entertained for hours on end.

In conclusion, the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote is a fantastic addition to any home entertainment setup. It's user-friendly, offers excellent picture quality, and the voice control feature is a game-changer. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and it has truly enhanced our home entertainment experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be careful when gift giving!

WARNING! I didn't realize that when you buy any Amazon device like this one (or a tablet, etc) it comes preloaded with your info. That's great.
But if you gift it to someone else it has all your info, and they can buy & install apps, make in app purchases and so on. You then have to rely on them to figure out how to switch it to their Amazon account...if they even have one.
EASY FIX. I guess I just needed to mark the "This is a gift" or the "This order contains a gift" box available on the Cart page.
