5.0 out of 5 starsHUAWEI, Where Have You Been All My Life? THE BEST PHONE!
Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2020
7 months of ownership. Mate 20 Pro. One hell of phone better than Samsung or Apple for seriously about half the price (when I bought it pre-COVID in Oct. 2019). I'm a 25+ year pro commercial photographer, and the camera / lenses (Leica, no less!) are nothing short of amazing. I also do pro printing, and I can display the 30" prints from the Mate 20 Pro right alongside the 30" prints from my Sony A7RIII. Especially the semi-macro stuff! Camera is fast, responsive, but lenses and resolution are just incredible. Phone function is perfect. Battery life longer than a day, usually 2 days, and I use full power all the time, and this is my business phone so it gets A LOT of use. Phone supports fast charging and it is FAST. Goes from 8% to 98% power in about half an hour. Also has wireless charging which is also really convenient. This phone came with Google Play, so it has all the Google Play apps AND you have access to all the Huawei equivalent apps, so it's the best of both worlds. I find myself using many of the Huawei apps. HereWeGo mapping app is at least as good as Google Maps. And I prefer Huawei email apps. Lots and lots of options, many of which I do not use as I really bought this primarily for the crazy good camera. Phone can double as a hot spot. Huawei's desktop app is very useful. You can backup your phone to your own PC, not just to someone's "cloud". And it works great.
Had to throw a Hong Kong SIM card (cheap, 13bucks, on Amazon) in the phone to BEGIN receiving software updates, but after that it has received all Google updates, security updates, and HUAWEI updates on its own. So whatever it cost, add thirteen smackers for that convenience. Still a great deal. Updated to Android 10, EMUI 10, and yes, it is nice! You will need a case. The phone without a case is too slippery. It will slide off anything. I recommend the Unicorn Beetle case. And I don't throw my phone around, but I do get around carrying it mostly in my pocket. This phone has held up better than any phone I've ever owned. Especially the charging port...All is like new, seriously LIKE NEW after 7 months. Absolute keeper. I think USA sanctions HUAWEI because HUAWEI is making such great phones with latest tech and pricing them where they are AFFORDABLE for anyone. But the Mate 20 Pro came out before the sanction nonsense, so you're good with this phone if that is a concern. You have Google and HUAWEI and all updates in one device.
CONS: It's slippery. A case is a requirement if you use a phone like I do. And hat's it. I cannot find fault with this magnificent device. I waited 7 months to write this review because this was my first HUAWEI device and wanted to make sure it was built solid for the long haul. Well, it is, and this is my first HUAWEI, but it will definitely not be my last HUAWEI.

1.0 out of 5 starsBEWARE VERY BAD REPAIRS!!!
Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2020
Ordered end of November around April screen started flashing and then it was unusable. Amazon said no warranty on them, local Huawei dealer would not take it under warranty either.
Around July I decided to try and repair myself, in any case it was bad already. So I bought screen replacement.
My surprise is that when I tried to open the battery cover it came off easily without any heat. It was glued with just some pieces of double tape!!! SO THERE WAS NO WATER RESISTANCE ON THE THING...
When I started to disassemble I found it had 5 SCREWS MISSING...
There was a big fingerprint in the metal of power board...
The little board where antenna cable connects had a BROKEN PIECE where the screw goes in...
There is a frame that holds the front camera in place but it was gone in the phone THEY DID NOT PUT IT BACK IN...
Almost no thermal paste for board cooling it was just barely touching the metal

When I described this to amazon customer service they understood and gave credit for a local repair since I am out of the country, I have to recognize them for that. When I found out how the phone was inside I felt very cheated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beast smartphone packed with key features
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2019

I've had this for about 3 weeks as my main phone. Contrary to "light leaking" and glue gate claims, the model I received is fine. So there are no issues to report regarding that. I'm in the US on AT&T. No issues with coverage whatsoever. Ok, onto the pros and cons.

Pros:
- Battery life: Absolutely the best on any smartphone right now. I easily get around 35 hours (moderate to heavy usage on YouTube, Instagram, FB). I've had the iPhone XS Max, Pixel 3 XL, Samsung S9+, etc and with this phone, I don't feel the need to search for an outlet.
- Super fast charging: this is on par with the OnePlus, if not better with 40w charging. 70% in 30mins is factual - I have tried it myself.
- Form factor: I have smaller hands but the 6.3" screen in this frame is a joy to handle. Easier to hold than a Note 9.
- Camera: You won't get a perfect shot everytime like the Pixel 2/3 series but the versatility of lenses is unmatched in 2019. The wide, telephoto, and 5x hybrid zoom are fun to play with and sharp. You just need to play with all the modes depending on what you're capturing. There are many modes to choose from. I'd rate this camera just behind the and Pixel 3 but ahead of the iPhone X's.
- Gestures: You can maximize screen real estate by using screen gestures similar to the iPhone X's. Love this btw. No need for the usual 3 nav buttons.
- IR blaster
- Desktop mode mirroring onto your smart tv (similar to Samsung Dex but totally wireless)

Cons:
- Notifications: they do not always display on the lockscreen (which is odd). Kind of a bummer but not a deal breaker.
- Vibration motor: iPhone X is still King in this department. Huawei's is a tad weak.
- Carrier availability: not sold in US.

Overall: this is a true beast of a phone. It's a shame Americans don't have a chance to experience this powerhouse jam-packed with features. With outstanding battery life and super fast charging, amazing camera, great form factor, gorgeous screen, this is truly worth every penny you pay for.

This phone is an absolute beast. The design is stunning. I got the emerald green and man does it stand out. Who rocks a green phone?? It last long due to large battery and charges super fast with it's original charger. The back cameras take amazing pictures with great dynamic range and detail. As well as low light pictures come out good in most conditions that's not near pitch black. Video is good also but i wish it did 4k 60fps, it only does 30fps. Front camera is not great it does skin smoothing too heavily I can't seem to find a way to turn it off. Im not a selfie whore so it doesn't bother me much. For a tall phone it feels good in the hand but one hand typing is out of the question. I don't like the software UI and it came with so much bloatware, luckily i installed the pixel launcher and you can uninstall 90% of useless apps it came with. Mostly my experience has been more than amazing with this phone and would recommend it but it's not easy to get here in the U.S.

Also the seller added a US power adapter free of charge, it comes with a Euro charger in the box and i was ready purchase one. Very greatful for that. My unit luckily didn't come with the LG screen otherwise i would have returned it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet most of my expectation
Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2022

The phone is better than most devices I have ever purchased, but reading reviews and watching review videos set my expectations very high and I came across a couple disappointments. 1. Battery life- I struggled with my previous Samsung not holding up to my needs, at my job I need to have Bluetooth and WiFi on all day and sometimes I play music in the back ground, I thought the Mate 20 pro would solve my problem, unfortunately, I have to keep it connected just like my Samsung s8+. 2 Camera is tricky- It can be a great camera, if not the best, but you need practice and patience. I still have not been able to master the art of using the camera but I managed to get great shots outdoors, indoors is still a hassle 3. Video resolution- I know I said a couple but I have to mention the video resolution, maybe it's the Internet quality in my country but some days playing videos online is not that pleasing, it looks pixelated and other times it is great, still not sure becaue I never had this issue with my Samsung S8+. Over all I think it's a great phone and though I have those 2 issues I am still in love with my Mate 20 pro, I have been feeling like a kid at Christmas these first 3 days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pros, not so important Cons
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2019

I was very scared to change my iPhone for an Android device. However, I took a risk because of the great reviews that this phone had. If you ask me what are the most important things of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, I would say that they are:
1. Battery life: the battery lasts almost 48 full hours.
2. Incredible photos: the quality of the photos is undeniable.
3. Where is my phone?: The Smart Assistance feature allows me to find my phone if I left it somewhere in my house and I cannot find it. I always lose it, so this feature is super useful!
4. Great themes and tones! Also, the Eye Comfort feature is something wonderful.
5. Its curved screen gives a better definition and is truly beautiful.
Not so great things:
1. The video quality is good, but there are other phones with better video quality.
2. The audio quality is not the best (it's good, do not misunderstand me, but there are competitors with something better).
3. Does not have the traditional entrance for headphones; so you can only use the ones that the phone brings that connect by USB or use wireless.
4. The face recognition feature (in my opinion) is not so effective. 90% of the times doesn't recognize me.
In general, I do not regret my purchase. So far the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has proven to be a genius device.

It’s a wonderful device! Very easy to configure, personalize and use. Very fast surfing the web and a great battery life! With my daily usage, mostly WhatsApp and some videos and mails, it has lasted 2 days!! Easy to use and handle. No problem getting used to EMUI, practically the same as Android. No issue either with the green hue in the display some user have reported. The display is very bright and clear, great definition, and also good with sunlight! Ut what’s most important to me, and was one of the reasons I decided on it is that it takes AMAZING pictures, even in low light conditions! Takes some time getting used to all the camera options, but just with the basics, and following the in-screen instructions, you can take pictures like a pro!! LOVE this phone!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for use on AT&T
Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2021

This is a beautiful phone, but it has significant drawbacks in my daily usage.

Drawbacks:
1-Cannot be used on AT&T (or possibly other networks phasing out 3G capabilities)
a) Although the phone does have 4G capabilities, AT&T will treat it as a 3G phone and eventually boot you off the network if you try to activate your existing SIM card on this device (because AT&T is phasing out 3G support by 2022 and will suspend the lines of users who attempt to activate new devices that it recognizes as 3G on its network)

b Also, while I was able to use it on AT&T (both before they suspended my line, and after they re-activated it), I had horrible call quality. I could hear people well, but they couldn't hear me; even the AT&T reps that I called using 611 asked to call me on another phone. This issue may follow the device on other networks other than AT&T where it chooses to use 3G. I have been informed of possible resolutions to this issue, such as going into network settings and choosing a preference for 4G, or using a network switching app to detect and change network preferences, but because of 1a) (I don't want my line suspended again), I won't be investigating those solutions.

2-Not IPX7 (meaning does not meet the standard of being able to be underwater for up to 1m for up to 30min). I checked my GSMArena and PhoneArena specs and they indicated that the Mate 20Pro is rated IPx7, so I felt comfortable strapping it to my arm and dipping into Lake Michigan for a splash (think horsing around in the water, not swimming laps or a triathlon). The phone functioned normally during and for about a couple of hours afterwards, but then its screen started to show lines and the camera showed issues. Eventually using the phone because near impossible. The vendor sent me a replacement, but I am in no mood to test it again to see if I just had the bad luck to get a bad apple.

3-Back texture manages to both be slippery, but also have a grating feeling when I run my fingers across it (similar to the hair-raising feeling I get when knives are sharpened against other metal). The clear back cover that comes included with the device deals with both issues, but I hate using covers, especially with such beautiful devices. So I have to be extra careful to ensure that it doesn't slip. And the metallic plate I placed on the back gives me a surface to touch that doesn't have that grating texture.

4-Cannot take videos near loud speakers. This is a funny issue; I attended a dance competition and wanted to take pictures, but I think that the Optical Image Stabilization was overloaded by the vibrations for the loudspeaker nearby and resulted in blurred images. From looking at the images, I may as well have set the phone on the speaker itself. PS this wasn't a huge speaker, and it wasn't especially loud, but it seemed enough to render the camera unusable.

The nice things about this phone:
1-It looks nice...without a case.
It is a lovely phone to look at. I love the red accent on the power button against an emerald green phone. It also manages to look nice when you use the clear plastic back case that comes with the phone.

2-Working Dual-SIM, this was one of the primary reasons for which I got this phone, and it does work (unlike other manufacturers who lock this feature for phones sold in the USA).

3-Decent software support, it is currently on EMUI 11, but I don't know how much longer it will get software support after 2021.

So given the first drawback (Unable to use on 4G networks in general), I would not recommend anyone buy this device as a phone for use in the USA, especially on AT&T.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST phone I have ever owned!
Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2019

This is the best phone I have ever owned. I upgraded from an iPhone 6s that I had for two years. I wanted a new phone and I was sick and tiered of Apple playing mind games with its overly loyal customers while Chinese companies like Huawei are releasing next level phone technology at reasonable prices. I bothered to go to the apple store and try out every single new iPhone they had testing the camera and how images looked and I was very disappointed at how little apples cameras and screen rez has changed since the 6s for most of their phones. If I wanted a decent apple phone camera I would have to shell out nearly 1k for a phone which I refuse to do. So I did some research online and found the Huawei, which I had never previously heard of, was a darling amongst tech reviewers. Now that I have it in my hands I can see why. On the one hand I like having a phone that most people don't have but I also feel obliged to say if you are still with apple please leave the cult and buy a phone from a company that sees its customers as valuable and intelligent. Apple thinks you are stupid and will charge you for just the aesthetics of a phone that is lacking in features.

I paid for fast shipping and it came on schedule. I got the emerald green because the twilight is too showy and corful for me, this is a great classy color with depth. The few areas for improvement on this phone are ones I knew about before buying and that is the face unlock and fingerprint scanner, they lag and are not as smooth and swift as on other devices, this is mostly just annoying when driving but I guess all more reason to stay focused on the road. And another random problem I have is that I haven't been able to use split screen with my knuckles yet, but that may be due to my screen protector.
