5.0 out of 5 starsECG function works well
Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019
This is the first Apple Watch I've ever owned. I was prepared to like it, but this new love I have for this piece of electronic wonder truly surprised me!

On a daily basis I do enjoy my iPhone 8, Macbook and Mac Mini, but couldn't quite justify the purchase of the Apple Watch 4. I have a Garmin fitness watch which I thought was enough for fitness tracking, and the price of the 4 seemed too high to justify a purchase until I saw this one version drop to three-eighty-four, and I had one-fifty in credit to use on Amazon.

I was intrigued by the idea of the ECG functionality. A month ago I was hospitalized with chest pain and told I'd previously had a heart attack. An angiogram showed my heart was healthy and I could resume working out, but after a scare like that, I was looking to monitor my heart health a bit more than before.

In reading through various information on the Apple Watch 4 I was afraid I wouldn't be able to use the ECG function as my cell service provider is Simple Mobile (T-Mobile knock off...). A chat with some reps at Costco and Best Buy seemed to confirm it would not work. I bought it anyway, thinking this functionality would just be something I couldn't use.

Much to my delight, it worked with this GPS (not GPS and cellular version) Apple Watch 4. Whether I'm connected to Wifi or using Simple Mobile's LTE network, data is collected and saved. No issues whatsoever with the ECG. Love it!

Additionally, I love the Walkie Talkie feature that allows quick communication between buddies who have Watch 4's.

As with all Apple products, the watch is beautifully packaged and directions for putting on the watch band and setting up the watch to sync with your iPhone are clear. The watch, band (two sizes included) and the charger are included with this purchase.

I have a small wrist and the 40mm size doesn't overwhelm it. It's actually kind of perfect in its surface area, thickness and weight. Comfortable to wear to bed, which brings me to a cheap app addition that gives users sleep monitoring.

AutoSleep is a three dollar app you can add easily via the Appstore, and it provides users with a means to track sleep habits and see when you are in deep sleep. I have other fitness watches which track sleep, but this app seems even better. Another app of the same type to consider is Pillow - for about the same price.

The display on the Watch 4 is bright and easily customizable with multiple options for changing up your watch face. I love the Mickey Mouse (there's a Minnie one too) that tells you the time when you tap on it - in the mouse's voice. Kaleidoscope, chronograph and many others are available for free too. You can also choose from your own photos to use them as watch faces.

The operating system of this watch is very quick and responsive. I was amazed by how fast it could get me to the app cluster and open apps quickly, one after the other. This is a 16GB watch that seems to have plenty of room and doesn't get bogged down easily.

I received a call on it today and the person on the other end of the line said the call clarity was excellent. The speakers built into the phone are amazing! It was as good or better than talking on my iPhone 8 using the speakerphone.

Seeing text messages at a glance, checking your calendar, checking the weather, using the Watch 4 as a remote shutter release for your iPhone, making phone calls, accepting or declining phone calls, getting news updates, challenging friends by sharing fitness goals and milestones, checking heart rate and/or running an ECG within seconds are only a few of the many reasons buyers will fall in love with this device.

The Apple Watch 4 is a techie's delight, but it does have a learning curve. User enjoyment will be directly proportional with the time and effort put into learning its many functions and adding apps that are useful for the specific user's lifestyle.

NOTE: YouTube has some great tutorials.

I am very happy I bought one, and the more I use it the more I know it is likely to become an important part of my daily routine of sleeping, eating, working out and engaging with friends and family.

Highly recommend the Apple Watch 4!

3.0 out of 5 starsThe notifications for the phone app cannot be disabled on the watch

I just received this watch in the mail. After setting it up everything looks and works fine (the features that I use, anyway), BUT ... I cannot get the watch to STOP ringing when I receive a call on the phone. I have disabled notifications on the phone app from the phone, as you would expect, and although the notifications are Off and sounds and haptics disabled from the phone, the watch still rings. I restarted the devices and re-paired the watch to no avail. After being on Apple chat for over an hour, they told me everything is set up correctly but that at this time this feature is not available. Hmm ... if they have a "notifications off" option for this app and it is enabled, I am thinking the feature IS available but just not working right ... Quite confused at this time. I did not have this problem with my old Apple watch which was series 1.

I have had a series two for a few years now and decided to upgrade. Not only did amazon give me one day delivery, but it came very secure and nicely packaged. The watch is so beautiful, going from the series 2 box-like screen to the nicely rounded is so nice. The watch is fast, and a great upgrade! It’s a perfect size for my wrist, as when I got my series two they only had 38mm and 42mm... but this is a perfect in-between! If you’re on the fence about getting this watch, I highly recommend! Apple Watch has changed my daily routine for the better. Easier to manage tasks, reminders, emails, and everything on the go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great health tool for a diabetic

I’ve now had this watch for three months. I’ve worn it every single day. I’m truly amazed by its capabilities. It links with my continuous glucose monitor through my iPhone and shows my blood sugar on the face of the watch. It has motivated me to lose 10 pounds in three months just by meeting my move goals every day (walking more and taking the stairs, not a new exercise regimen). I love the technology of the watch. My daily resting heart rate has significantly improved. As a health tool, I could not ask for more. My ONLY complaint is the short battery life...only lasts about 16-18 hours for me. I charge it every night. Even though it doesn’t have cellular, I can text and answer calls as long as my phone is close.

I primarily purchased this iWatch for fitness tracking and convenience as far as messages and calls, but I’ve not used it much for calls or outgoing messages. The color and clarity as well as ease of using the app and customizing are amazing, the battery drains quick with calls, but unless you’re constantly in the phone, your battery will last all day.
Delivery was quick, packaging was excellent (designed for aesthetics as well as protection) and setup was easy. If you have issues, Apple is very easy to search or call for technical assistance.
I’ve recently loaded a third-party sleep app that uses the iWatch to gather sleep info (length, type and heart beat bpm) that adds to the functionality.

I originally bought this watch to keep my phone on me even when I couldn't be on my phone which as when I'm working. I didn't realize until I had the watch for a couple days that it was a FitBit and then a lot. Not only did it alert me about possibly having high blood pressure (thanks a lot, heavy caffeine usage) but it also made me aware of my lack of physical activity. In the past year (was a Black Friday 2018 purchase), I have since become more active and I have accepted that I can't eat like I did in college.

My only complaint is that the watch does not give an alert until it is at 10%. A couple times I lost hours worth of activity because I failed to check my watch battery before leaving home. I have since remedied that problem by carrying a travel charger just in case. I also wish there were more watch face options.

I’m deep into the Apple ecosystem and was initially hesitant to get a Watch because I don’t normally wear watches. When the 4 came out with ECG capabilities, I hopped on it mostly because I’m convinced I have some sort of heart issue (details are irrelevant here). I figured I’d get it to easily have a way to do a quick ECG reading of my own and then see how I like the watch in general.

Well. Good news is that Apple doesn’t think I have any heart problems. And I also decided to keep it despite the hefty price tag, which I personally think is BS but it’s an Apple product so what are you going to do?

After using it for about a month, I discovered that I pretty much don’t use the apps on it at all. I rarely, rarely press the crown and go into the apps view. The only time I ever do that is to click the workout app and start a workout. Otherwise, I don’t use any apps that transferred over from my iPhone and haven’t bothered to download any apps either. So why, you ask, have I kept it this whole time and will continue to keep it?

It gets me up and moving (which is sort of the whole point). I’m a wicked sedentary creature and I really hate walking, with a very strong passion that all my friends can testify to. If there’s a chance for me to not walk, I’ll take it. I also don’t go to the gym; been underweight my whole life so never bothered.

But with the Apple Watch, wow. When I wear it, I will take all walks possible in order to max those 3 rings. It’s crazy. I tell this to my friends and they just laugh at me but it is so true. Gamification is a real thing. I add all my Apple Watch friends on it and I just want to fill in my rings so they get a notification that I’m being active in my life. It’s almost addicting. There are some slight issues with regular tracking (casual walking for 30 min, it might only count as 15) so it’s better to start a workout so it knows to really pay attention to what you’re doing. Sometimes, it also will congratulate you for standing when you haven’t been. A little finicky.

For what is essentially a fitness tracker, is it worth it to pay as much as it costs? That depends on you. I wasn’t trying to get a fitness tracker but once I had it on me, I realize it helped out a lot for me and if I can pay 400 and be a bit healthier so I don’t get heart disease or something in the future, perhaps it’s worth it.

Story aside, here are smaller pros and cons that I can think of.

Pros:
* Phone notifications on Watch & easy reply back
* Ask Siri on Watch to ping phone when you lose it in the house (you know this happens)
* When driving and navigating, it’ll vibrate 3x before dictating an instruction
* Looks great; Apple product after all

Cons:
* 40mm is smallest and not 38mm, sucks for us small wrist folks.. but doesn’t look that horrible
* Have to have Bluetooth headphones (easy with AirPods)
* Apple Watch bands are expensive (better off with 3rd party)
* Battery life, as compared to a Fitbit or similar (1.5 days for me)
* Still no sleep tracking

If you're already in the Apple ecosystem, this will align well with all your other Apple products. If this is your first Apple device, it might not work quite as well and you would lose a lot of the cool functionality that exists.

I purchased this to use while swimming and because of all the features. But, it also may have saved my life.
Shortly after getting it and wearing it all the time I was alerted of an Afib situation and am now under a doctors care for Afib. Had I continued with a different sport watch I might have not known that I was having Afib and could have experienced a stroke or heart attack. But by being alerted to the situation I am now on medication and under a doctors care. Thank goodness I bought and learned to use this fantastic Apple Watch series 4.
The cardiologist was fascinated with the proficiency of the watches heart programs.

I've had a bunch of different smart watches and fitness trackers. Knowing my steps keeps my motivated to move more. I also struggle with sleep and like to keep an eye on how I'm doing with that. I have an Iphone XS and recently got airpods as a gift. I take long walks with my dog and wanted to be able to listen to podcasts without taking my phone. Summer workout clothes are not conducive to carrying it around (lack of pockets etc). I did some research and found with the GPS apple watch I could download podcasts to the watch and would not need my phone or connectivity to listen to them - same goes for downloaded music. On top of saving 100 bucks by not getting the GPS + cellular, I'm not paying more on my Verizon bill (insert eye roll here) which is a win/win.

The real clincher on deciding to splurge on an apple watch was the fall detection. Despite being in my 30's and pretty healthy, I have an auto immune disease and live alone. I could be prone to falls in the future and I have fainted when I was by myself. It's a scary event when you don't know exactly what happened. Knowing that the watch will contact someone if I become immobile gives me a great piece of mind and I'm sure my dad will appreciate it too because he's a worry wart about me being "all alone". (PS - I LOVE living alone)

The heart rate seems very accurate and I got a good sleep app to track specifics, 3 bucks for AutoSleep and I adore it. The EKG monitor is cool. I'm still hunting for a step app I really like but so far everything is as expected. I knew the battery life was not that of some other trackers but was willing to compromise on that since I can easily charge when I'm doing computer work in the morning. It took about 40 minutes to go from 50% to 96%. The band that came with it is super comfortable. I didn't know that I'd like the white but I'm diggin it. Overall I'm very pleased with my decision to get an apple watch 4.
