5.0 out of 5 starsPolar Grit review- 5 star prduct
Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020
I’ve been a Polar user since the 90s. I’m also a tech nerd that loves watches. So naturally I was excited to see this new Grit X and purchased it straight away. I mostly mountain bike and swim now when working out outside, so a strong and rugged watch appeals to me ( I unfortunately do go down time to time). First impressions of this watch is that it is very aesthetically impressive. The new big metal buttons and large touch display are a welcome feature. I wear full finger gloves so its nice to be able to easily find the buttons on the go. Watch is comfortable too and noticeably lighter than another brand GPS watch I own.

Here are my favorite features of this watch

Optical HR sensor. It is extremely accurate. I ride my bike on a smart trainer 2-3 days a week during winter/spring, using the Zwift app. I have a Polar H9 heart rate strap paired to the Zwift app. I can pair this to the Grit X, but did not detect any delta between the HR strap and the optical. On both rides, at various intensities I never saw more than a 1-2 beat delta between the two. Very cool as I like to see my HR, but don’t like to always wear a strap while mountain biking.

Hill Splitter. This is a welcome feature for anyone that likes to do hill repeats. No input needed. It senses your ascent, and automatically counts your repeats for you as well as the distance and time of ascent and decent. This worked great two days ago on hill repeat workout on my road bike. This is fun and convenient feature.

Screen display and touch features. I like the new display. Very clear and just bright enough. Of course easy to light up with the top left button. I have it on the weather screen all the time. Nice to have winds and temperature right in view.

Route guidance. This was something I did not use a watch for until now, but very comfortable using now with the Grit X. I live in Bend Oregon where we have a plethora of trails to explore. If you want an effective way to find a prescribed route, this watch makes it very simple. You will easily stay on your trail/road and know when to turn.

Battery life. I did three loooooong workouts in 2 days, had the optical HR, GPS etc. on continuous and still had tons of juice remaining went to charge it.

I love all the other features such as swim metrics, sleep stages, and nightly recharge. Just started to use FitSpark and I’ll edit this review after I use it for a few weeks, but looks like another great training tool.

All in all this is another great watch from Polar. This watch can do it all and more than my other brand GPS bike computer. It is a personal coach/trainer on your wrist along with the Polar Flow app, and the durability of a G-Shock. I highly recommend this sport watch. 5 Stars.

1.0 out of 5 starsDeeply Flawed GPS Device
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2020
The primary requirement of a GPS device is to track my location, distance, and pace. This device fails at that. And it fails in crazy ways.

Today, I ran a 16 mile trail run. At the end of the run, the Grit X showed that I ran 4.93 miles. It was failing in the first mile. I had good GPS reception, so I have no idea why this would happen. The device actually did track the entire route, heart rate, elevation changes, etc., but the distance and pace were completely wrong. This is the second run in three runs where the device has failed. I ended up tracking today's run on my iPhone, and it had no problem tracking.

The other night, I left the device to charge all night. When I woke up, the Polar Flow app and the device were showing that I hit 503% of my activity goal. Again, it was on the charger all night. When I reviewed the heart rate data, it was fluctuating all over the place between 120 bpm and 175 bpm all night long.

I did reach out to Polar on both issues, but I have not heard back from them. However, I've been running for almost a decade and a half, and I've used many GPS units. I've never had one fail so badly. It is not a good sign for this product. I need my devices to do the bare minimum, at least: track my route, distance, heart rate, and pace. If you can't do that with an almost $500 device (with tax), it is a complete fail. Possibly Polar can fix it, but how could they ship a device this flawed to begin with? Maybe this is a defective one. I don't know, and I don't have time to figure it out. It's very disappointing, but this device is being returned.

UPDATE: It has been three weeks, and Polar still have not responded to my two support requests. I've checked my Junk folder and anywhere else the email could end up. They have not responded. I understand we are living through a global pandemic, so maybe they are short-staffed. But Polar decided to release this device in May, in the middle of the pandemic, so they should have support available (working from home, I hope) for this brand new device. But they do not.

I'm not sure why there are so many positive reviews for this device when my experience was so bad. However, if you plug this Amazon product page URL into the website fakespot dot com, you'll see that it gets a low rating (a "D" at the time of this writing) in regards to legitimate reviews. So, if you are still interested in this device, be prepared to be frustrated. But more importantly, check the return policy and order it. I don't recommend it, but maybe you will have a better experience. My experience was very bad. It was the worst device I have ever tried in my 12 years of running long distances and mountain biking on road and trails (mostly trails).

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps me informed of my fitness progress
Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2020

At the beginning of the COVID lockdown I was fortunate enough to locate a good deal on a new Bowflex Max Trainer M5 on Amazon. But the chest strap HRM was crappy. I then got a Polar H10 HRM chest strap, which was awesome, and exposed me to the online Polar tracking software which is even more awesome. This then prompted me to get this Grit X watch where I could add sleep monitoring and have a more full view of my calorie exertion. For my needs was likely overkill, but wanted a fitness watch with an always on display, I was sold on the Polar ecosystem and this is just a darn good-looking watch.

After 3 weeks with this watch I'm very pleased. I like the extended battery life if I were to travel for work (but I have not been), but recharging the watch daily as I read my Polar Flow app takes about 15 minutes or less. I knew before buying this that the HRM function would not be as good as a chest strap. I use the chest strap for my HIIT training when it is important to get real-time results as I approach my heart beat max. The pairing of the watch and chest strap is automatic, look for the circle around the heart rate to turn from green to blue. But I take walks with my dog and longer walks with my wife and despite my living near a country border a block from a large lake my watch has had no issues tracking distance and mapping out routes I have taken. The sleep results seem to be pretty accurate as well. I like the watch face data options and I frequently keep it on the 3 hour weather forecast, which works well. While many have added the "COVID 15" I've actually lost over 15 pounds over the past 2 months. I'm in my 50's but my goal is to get back to my high school weight, so am looking to lose another 40 pounds over the next 9 months. For me, being old and overweight were 2 things I did not want when looking at COVID morbidity statistics, but now between my fitness and diet focus (which I had never done before) I really think I have created a very positive life style change for myself. I added some Barton quick release watch bands and they have worked real well and have added further watch versatility.

5.0 out of 5 stars Polar Nailed The Endurance/Adventure Product Category With This One!
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020
Size: Medium-LargeColor: BlackVerified Purchase
The Grit X is the perfect combination of functionality, battery life, and weight. As a trail runner, mountain biker, and ski mountaineer, I have struggled to find a product that blends these three characteristics appropriately until now.

My priorities are:
1. Accurate GPS tracking and elevation
2. Battery Life (minimum 40 hours activity tracking)
3. Accurate Heart Rate
4. Lightweight & Durable

The Grit X excels in all of these categories. Its wrist based heart rate is the best I have experienced, and is tightly aligned with my chest strap measurements. The GPS tracking and elevation was flawless even when running in the Boulder foothills where many GPS units struggle due to the proximity to steep slabs and cliff faces. Battery life has proven to be excellent, and it is much lighter than all of its competitors with similar battery life. It is light enough that you do not experience any wrist bruising when riding technical mountain bike trails, yet durable enough to not be concerned about taking it on a fourth or fifth class scramble.

When you combine this with all of the standard Polar Heart Rate features, Hill Splitter, Fueling Reminders and Komoot Navigation support features, it is truly the product segment leader. You will be extremely pleased with your purchase of the Polar Grit X!

Does everything I am looking for in a fitness watch. The app and web program display the info in ways you can use to help your training and everyday activity. I have used Polar product before and still find them excellent. From my point of view I recommend the Gritx.
Do a lot of research (google, youtube )to find what kind of watch will suit you best. Even if you choose another brand you will glad for your time spent searching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly the product I've been waiting for.

I am a recent convert to Ultrarunning. And until now, I haven't had a GPS watch suitable for the types of events I am training for. I've had tried many GPS watches over the years in my previous life as a Triathlete and Ultra-distance cyclist, and I'm constantly drawn back to Polar products for several reasons. And the Grit X is no exception. I was nervous before purchasing because I thought the watch would be bulky and heavy, like many of its competitors. That is not the case. This watch is so light, yet so durable. I don't know how they did it! I haven't taken it off since it first arrived. It's so light, and with the bonus of being able to track my sleep and nightly stats, I'm not sure I'll ever take it off!

Also, battery life is unbelievable. I am excited by the prospect of competing in my first 24+ hour race without the concern of losing my data due to a flat battery. There are so many features that I haven't taken advantage of yet - I can't wait to dig in and use this device to its full capacity. I would definitely recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect tool
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020

As a competitive Crossfit athlete and mountain climber, I'm looking for the best gear that will give me an edge in both. The Polar Grit X, so far, is proving to fit the bill.
Aesthetically it's a great piece. I've taken to wearing it all the time, and the battery life is great. Once a week charge and I'm good to go.
One of the challenges I face with my two preferred sports is that Crossfit is very glycolytic (carb) intensive, and peak bagging is much more oxidative. Balancing these two nutrition demands for different training days and events is hard. I've been playing with the Fuelwise feature on the watch and it's really insightful.
With the current state of the world, I haven't been able to put the hillsplitter feature to the test yet, but I'm looking forward to tracking performance on hill repeats as well as long climbs.
It has all the features of my Polar Vantage that have been great for my training...with the added outdoor features as well. And it's a Polar, so the HR monitoring is the best I've found.
I'm looking forward to this year's training and results and the additional insights gleaned from my new Polar Grit X.

5.0 out of 5 stars Out with the old Garmin and in with the new!

BUY THIS WATCH! At the start of the quarantine, I decided to take my physical fitness a bit more seriously(again). Instead of dusting off my old Garmin Fenix 5, I decided to take a look at what is the latest and greatest on the market. My old watch was big and chunky and I hardly understood any of the features that it had. The Grit X has so many easy to understand features that I have been using since I put it on. The highlights so far:

1) The GPS is rock solid, even going in/out of tunnels it still keeps track of pace/location etc.
2) Battery life is outstanding - I have had it for five days already using it for about 4 hours and still have 50% battery.
3) Navigation options - I love the options of adding Komoot/Strava Live segments to the watch - I don't have to worry about getting lost on some of my longer runs
4) DETAILS! - On one run I was able to get HR, pace, distance, power, cadence, Hill Splitter (just to name a few). For the calories burned, you are able to see a breakdown of Carbs/Protein/Fat to help better understand recovery.
The wrist based HR was spot on which was a relief and was consistent throughout my runs.

Still looking forward to unlocking more on this watch, but it has definitely been a big motivator so far!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not up to Polar's usual standard of excellence
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2020
Size: Medium-LargeColor: Green - SilverVerified Purchase
It kills me to rate this product so poorly; I have been a HUGE cheerleader of Polar for a long time, the V800 was hands down the best electronics investment I've ever made in my life, Polar support is amazing and repaired/refurbished it for me twice over the course of my ownership, even including repair services I did not ask or pay for. When it came time to retire my V800 I did not even consider a competitor to Polar, I went straight to their current product line and elected to purchase the Grit-X.

Where do I even begin? The GPS chipset/reception is terrible compared to the V800. My runs will be recorded on the wrong side of the street, in my neighbor's front lawns, etc. It takes forever to establish a GPS lock even with the built-in A-GPS feature. My V800 never took more than 15-20 seconds to get a lock and it had no A-GPS. The Grit-X will lose lock under a thick canopy of trees; my V800 could hold a lock indoors in many instances (single story building) and never lost it outdoors under any circumstance.

I strongly dislike the touchscreen interface and it's not even necessary because the buttons will do everything you need, but you can't disable the touchscreen feature, so if you brush up against the watch in your day to day activities you will later find it on a different screen than you desire.

The wrist based heart rate is terribly inaccurate; I have a resting heart rate in the high 50s/low 60s but the Grit-X frequently shows me >120 just sitting on the couch watching TV.

The strap absolutely tears into my wrist. I can only wear this watch for activities, not 24/7 as I wore my V800; if I wear this all day I end up with a rash from the strap and an imprint from the optical heart rate sensor. It has made my wrist bleed on more than one occasion. Consequently, I can no longer avail myself of the sleep tracking and recovery functionality.

About the only positive I can find is Polar has successfully managed to square the circle between battery life and color screen; battery life on this puppy is competitive with my V800, I can go more than a week without re-charging it, whereas other smart watches (e.g., Apple) typically need daily re-charging.

I really wish I had been more aggressive about trying this watch before the return window closed, but I trusted Polar, and now I'm stuck with a $430+ paperweight that's barely functional as an activity tracker and useless as a recovery/sleep monitor. Hopefully their other modern generation products are better than this, because if this is the future of Polar's offerings I don't see them surviving long in this hugely competitive market, and it breaks my heart to think about them going away. We've been through a lot (4 full marathons, more half-marathons than I can count, multiple 20+ mile hikes) together and I hope they realize the inferiority of this design and correct course ASAP.
