How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly big sound from a small speaker

I bought this to complement a relatively cheap 43" TV I installed in one of our main living areas, as an addition to our main TV setup elsewhere (that one with Sonos Arc).

Having come previously from a large AV surround amp and discrete speakers / subwoofer and also the Sonos Arc, I was just wanting something to improve on the crappy sound that is built-in to TVs these days. For the price and the size of the unit (it's really very compact), I wasn't expecting amazing sound.

I was quite stunned at the depth and volume this little box produces. Sure, the surround presence isn't really there, it's more of a wide soundstage, but for the price and size, it really packs a punch. I was thinking I'd give it a go at first and maybe add a sub-mini later if needed, but for a second-TV setup (and the TV was not much more than the cost of this soundbar) I've decided that it isn't worth it. There's quite a heavy punch from some soundtracks that belies the size of this little speaker, and the bass extension is surprisingly low. Sure, a sub is going to improve things a lot, but on a budget this soundbar rocks. Good vocal clarity in the mids and highs too.

I was worried about the lack of HDMI and remote, but it really isn't needed if you have a simple setup with a smart TV (and I don't need Dolby Atmos for this TV). I don't have any other sources of audio for this soundbar, so the optical input straight from the TV works just fine. The setup process learns the type of remote you're using, and there are only a handful of remotes (non-IR based) that may be more of an issue, so do check the Sonos website first to see if yours is one of those. The volume buttons on both the TV remote (Panasonic) and the Amazon Fire stick control the Ray perfectly.

And the other bonus is that this fits nicely in my Sonos ecosystem.

This is an excellent value bit of kit, with Sonos's usual build quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile desktop soundbar
Reviewed in Singapore on June 10, 2023

Slim Versatile desktop soundbar with built in native Wi-Fi streaming of Apple Music, AirPlay 2, digital radio, YouTube and occassional movies.

Paired with the Creative x4 usb dac over optical on Windows with Dolby digital encoder enabled (Windows only with the Dac) the volume on the ray is amazingly loud and punchy. On the app it’s only at a 20 but you will rarely go beyond that. On Macs without the encoder, volume is usually at a normal 50-75.

Good for desktop use over optical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good but don't expect massive bass

I added this to the bedroom tv, which is a smaller screen, and paired it with a couple of Sonos One's for surround sound. The primary reason was to create more sound clarity when I have the AC on (yes yes, I know, first world problems!).

The Ray on it's own produces good sound clarity and range, and it does provide some bass but you're never going to get a huge amount in a package this small (well, the Bose soundlink mini shows that it can be done...but that's a whole different can of 'nanas).

When paired with the one's this becomes an amazing setup for a small/medium sized room with the additional speakers giving a rather impressive width to the soundstage AND significantly more bass (the bigger drivers in the one's do very well here).

Integration is super easy via optical connection and set up via the sonos app is easy and efficient. I didn't however find some of the voice clarification features through the app, BUT my home assistant integration enabled me to turn it (and other features) on. There's probably a way to do it but it wasn't immediately obvious.

Performance with tv audio is good and music is also very good.

It's small and compact too

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Sound

Make sure to use the optical cable supplied with the device. Ensure that you have plugged in the device! (I didn’t! Duh!) If you already have a Sonos device open the app and tap Add or go to Settings > System > Add Product. Use the app prompts to connect the device. If this is your first Sonos device download the Sonos app and follow prompts.
I had to exit the connection process probably because I entered the wrong password for my Router. The only way to restart the process is to delete the app and then reinstall. It’s probably possible to restart the connection process by turning the phone off and on again. From there on it was quick and easy.
The sound is really good. I am definitely very happy with the purchase.

OK, so I wanted a soundbar, my wife didn't. I wanted a bit more boom, my wife didn't, so I needed to do some research and having just got into the Sonos ecosystem, thought I'd look at the Ray, and for what I needed, it's amazing. I've only a small to medium living room, wanted a bit bass and a bar that looks stylish and this fits the bill. Great looking, easy to set up and has exceptional sound, that is clear and punchy. This is still a loud soundbar!

Also remember, that you need an optical lead, and if you've a large area to fill or want room shaking bass, then go next step up with Beam or Arc.

I've set mine up with 2 Ikea Symfonisk speakers and this delivers outstanding surround sound too.

So, do you need a not so boom boom soundbar for a smaller space, or even a wife or partner to consider, then go and purchase this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound quality

Connected unit to my tv in living room (tv must have optical connection so check this is case before you buy).

There is no remote control per se with the device, you use your normal tv IR remote control to manage the volume after disabling the TV’s built-in speakers. The unit activates as soon as your TV is turned on. Alternatively, you use the phone app.

Set up is very easy via a phone app that guides you step by step through the process.

There is no bluetooth but you can stream music from your iPhone using airplay.

Negatives - the unit is wifi enabled and is meant to detect NAS drives (uPNP/SMB). I have a NAS drive with all my music and despite other (older) ALLPLAY systems and wifi speakers having no issues detecting the networked drive, the Sonos Soundbar would not connect no matter what i tried! I looked on internet and this seems to be an issue with other customers too. Problem may be that it seems to only recognise the older and less secure SMB1. In any event this was a pain but not a show stopper for me. If you are planning to use to stream music from a NAS or wifi drive, I would probably give this unit a miss.

Sound quality is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for small rooms

This is a super little speaker for the price. Works well with my Amazon remote control. Great step up from built in TV speakers. The set up is easy and it’s a nice extra speaker for playing your music, using Spotify etc. The app is simple and it’s great that you can turn down from another room which is useful for those with children! I live in a terraced house with a small living room so I don’t want anything too powerful and this really fits the bill. It looks nice too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Value Sound bar, ideal if you have Sonos already

A great value soundbar, especially if you have Sonos kit already.

I’ve paired mine with a couple of Sonos Ones to give a more immersive feel.

Great for smaller rooms, and surprisingly good bass response from what is a very compact soundbar.

Good to be able to pair it with all the features available via the Sonos 2 app, including Trueplay tuning to give optimal audio performance.

This entry level sound bar from Sonos maybe a little more expensive, but when you link it to other Sonos items, is well worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overly complicated to set up

It's a speaker ! Oh my days, the log in, set up, registration, the sheer annoyance!!!
On and no hdmi. It has an optical input so I was unable to link straight to the TV or modem
Good sounds but I still can't get the remote to link so have to use my phone.

Overly complicated. If the sound didn't make up for it, it would have gone back
