5.0 out of 5 starsLogitech MX Brio – A High End Webcam
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2024
When the pandemic started, like many people, I had to start doing online meetings. My primary computer, a Mac Studio, does not have a built-in webcam and reasonably nice webcams were hard to find at the time. Since I'm a professional photographer, I quickly learned how to use my digital cameras as a webcam. With a proper lighting, my webcam setup produces a great video image for meetings and YouTube videos. The only problem is it takes some time to set it up since I don't leave it set up all the time. I wanted an alternative that provided a very nice image but didn't take long to set up. When I saw the Logitech MX Brio, I thought I would give it a try.
The MX Brio is very nicely made. It's small but very solid feeling. It has a built-in lens cover and some very nice features. Of course, the most important thing is the image quality. It's excellent! The sharpness and detail are outstanding for a webcam, especially if you use the HDR mode. It's great that the MX Brio can be quickly removed from the magnetic mount and then screwed onto a tripod. My only complaint about the mount is I would have preferred that it not use an adhesive to attach the mount to my monitor. I still plan to use my professional camera for online meetings and YouTube videos when I have the time to set it up so I would prefer to be able to move the mount out of the way. At this point, I've left the adhesive covered and the mount seems to be staying in place fine.
Is the image quality of the MX Brio up to that of my mirrorless digital camera? No, it's outstanding but it doesn't match the quality of my camera. Of course, my camera and lens cost 10X as much. The MX Brio has a pretty wide view but, fortunately, you can use the G-Hub software to crop the image without much loss of quality. The software, available on Logitech's website, also let you adjust color, exposure, turn HDR on and off, etc.
The microphones are okay for a webcam but I'll stick with using an external lavalier mic for better sound quality. The built-in mics will work in a pinch and, while better than most webcams, they're still not up to the quality I prefer.
Overall, this is an excellent webcam. The big question is whether it is worth the price. For me, it is but it might not be to others. (I know plenty of people that are satisfied using low quality built-in webcams with their laptops so they're not going to spend the money for this.)
