About Razer
For Gamers. By Gamers. It's not just a tagline. It's a mission. It's exactly what drives Razer to create products which constantly tilt the competition in your favor. From behind the drawing board all the way to the tournament stage, each step is controlled by the undeniable desire for all gamers - to always win.
Membrane meets Mechanical
The Razer Ornata features the all-new Razer Mecha-Membrane that combines the best of both membrane rubber domes and mechanical switches to deliver a typing experience unlike anything before. While traditional rubber dome keyboards are known for their soft cushioned touch, they fail to deliver accurate tactility due to their mushy feel and lack of actuation control. On the other hand, mechanical switches deliver fast actuations and distinct tactile feedback but cause fatigue during extended gaming sessions.
The result is the revolutionary patent pending Razer Mecha-Membrane that combines the best of both worlds by providing a soft cushioned touch along with a crisp tactile click in a mid-height keycap architecture allowing your fingers to fly across the keyboard ensuring every command is executed instantly.
- Razer Mecha-Membrane Technology
- Mid-height keycaps
- Individually backlit keys
- Ergonomic wrist rest
- Razer Synapse enabled
- Fully programmable keys with on the fly macro recording
- 10-key roll over
- Dedicated Gaming Mode
- Anti-ghosting capability for up to 10 simultaneous key presses

As a MacOS user, there aren't many options for choosing a good mechanical keyboard with keyboard customization support. Luckily, Razer has their Synapse app that gives some keyboard customizations, such as setting profiles for lighting effects. There aren't as many effects compared to those from Corsair, but it's still fun to play around with the pre-made lightings. I didn't find a way to make my own lighting effects though.
On MacOS Sierra, most of the normal function keys work except for the shortcuts for toggling brightness. Not sure what's wrong with that, but I just set a different keyboard shortcut to control brightness.
Also, as a Dvorak user, there are even less mechanical keyboards that have uniform keycaps to change the keyboard into Dvorak layout. Most keyboards that I found are in QWERTY and have ergonomic keycaps, which prevents the keys from being switched around. The Ornata keyboard, to my surprise, had uniform keycaps! I was able to remove the keycaps and re-arrange them as Dvorak layout. Much awesomeness.
Pros:
+ Comparably cheap price for a mechanical keyboard
+ Comfy and large wrist rest
+ Clicky and relatively quiet keys
+ Works well with MacOS
+++ Dvorak layout friendly!
Neutral:
= Razer Synapse is ok to use
= Would have preferred more lighting customizations
= Backlight LED is REALLY green (brightness and green-ness can be dimmed in the Synapse app)
Cons:
- Keycaps are matte and can be a fingerprint magnet
FYI: You can spend another $20 and get the full RGB version of this keyboard - the Razer Ornata Chroma.

the packaging is beautiful, this would be a GREAT gift for someone. I got it on sale for -65%. Take advantage of that deal while you can. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
1) The keyboard tries to simulate the feel of a mechanical keyboard, and it is very good at this. There is definitely tactile feedback and an audible click when you push down each key. This is clearly stated in the product description and Q+A's, but I somehow missed it and it's not really what I am looking for.
2) The keyboard has excellent, detailed light settings, with multiple highly customizable effects. For example, there is a "wave" effect. You can alter the frequency of the waves, how fast they move, how many waves per cycle, the angle and pattern of the waves, the brightness of the waves, etc. There are 4-6 other patterns as well, and you can layer patterns over eachother. For example, I made all my keys dimly lit with a "static" effect, then layered on a brighter "ripple" effect whenever a key is pressed. I really like this, buuut...
3) The keyboard is green, and only green. To get the multicolor version you need to pay a bit more for the product with "chroma" in the name. Once again, this is my mistake for not paying enough attention, I think the product page is clear enough.
4) This product is compatible with Razer Synapse 2, NOT 3. I downloaded Synapse 3 by mistake and it could not find my keyboard...once I uninstalled 3 and downloaded 2 everything worked great.
5) The lights are nice and bright, but they bleed. I thought it was amazing that you could light up individual keys with individual patterns, but the effect is diminished somewhat when adjacent keys also appear to be illuminated. For example, if you buy this keyboard thinking you could make it look awesome with some kind of checkerboard arrangement, it probably won't look as crisp as you think due to the light bleed.
6) Finally, in the picture it looked like the wrist rest could be attached to the keyboard, but this is not the case. They are two separate items, and can move independently. The wrist rest is very nice, and not porous like my old one (which has collected a gross amount of skin, dust, and oils over the years). Despite this, it seems to breathe fine and my wrists did not get sweaty while using it.
Overall, I do recommend this product, but only if you like green and you aren't banking on extremely crisp lighting patterns for specific keys.
Top reviews from other countries
The only complaints I saw when looking at other reviews was that you shouldn't get it because it isn't fully mechanical and that it's very "clicky", and I'm glad I ignored those. The keyboard feels great when you hit a key - very comfortable, no delay, smooth transitions. Not to mention that the padded wrist-rest is incredibly comfortable. Razer did a good job of getting more of a mechanical feel too. Going back and forth between my Ornata and my laptop's fully membrane keyboard, there is a noticeable difference in the feel of key-strokes. As for the "clickiness", yes, it's kinda clicky, but unless you're going fully membrane or want to start messing around with different switches, good luck getting a perfectly silent keyboard.
The build quality is good. It's fully plastic, though definitely not a cheap, thin plastic. The braided cable is a nice touch as well. I feel confident that it will last for years to come.
Functionality is very good as well. You can program macros, use the gaming mode to disable the Windows button and Alt+F4, and adjust things like the brightness of the keyboard back-lighting, volume, and media playback. You do have to use the function button to activate these things, which I know for some can be a deal breaker (though I'll never understand why).
The illumination is very strong and the keys feel ultra good.
The wrist rest is amazing and very very comfortable but its magnetic and not screwed to the keyboard.
Which is not a problem for me but might be for others pls see the reviews on youtube for the placement and attachment of the wrist rest.
Conclusion, The keyboard is better than many mechanical keyboard in this range and might be even the best.
