Disappointed with the lack of innovation from Intel, and the greedy price gouging from NVIDIA, I decided I was going to replace my aging system (I7 6700k + GTX 1080) with an AMD system. Picked up the Ryzen 7700x for 330$ in November, and finally picked this card up during an maybe hour long flash sale for only 700$ with tax, I picked up the rest of my components on sale as well, and in total built one of the fastest computers for gaming and spent less money than I would have on a 3090 - a card this GPU blows out of the water
I heard bad things about AMD drivers, especially about the new 22.11.2 driver, but the experience using AMD software has generally been better than NVIDIA. Everything is in one place and easy to navigate.
Lets talk about the GPU itself
- Very premium feel to it, great build quality, great design that will look good in your case regardless of your theme or lighting/color setup
- NORMAL SIZED FORM FACTOR. It's about 1 inch longer than my GTX 1080 and just barely encroaches into that 3rd slot. I cannot stress enough what a big deal this is that it will fit in any mid tower case with a radiator and should fit in any compact cases. This card puts to shame the ridiculous 3-4 slot cards from NVIDIA that will not fit in anything but a full tower case while delivering equal performance to the 3090 and only about 20-30% less compared to 40 series.
- Incredibly stable, running on the latest driver I have had no artifacting or random crashes
- Factory overclocked and runs at 2.7GHz out of the box. Breezes through anything you throw at it. I play at 1440p and in Cyberpunk with everything maxed out it maintains 100 FPS. In a lot of older titles with settings maxed out it caps out my 165hz refresh rate with less than 200W of power draw.
- Power draw and temps are less then expected, with 100% GPU utilization (which you will only hit in extremely demanding titles or running high refresh resolutions or refresh rates) it runs around 300-330 watts and temps stay between 70-75c for package and 95c for hotspot, which is fantastic for an overclocked card.
- Can do *some* raytracing, especially if you're willing to use FSR. NVIDIA has the advantage here but as someone who has been playing games for years I can confidently say raytracing doesn't make that much of a difference in the experience, and software raytracing is coming to a lot of titles through Unreal Engine 5.
- Significantly better performance per dollar (if you can pick it up for 700-750$) compared to some other AMD cards (including their new 7900XT and XTX) and just about everything from NVIDIA. The math works out to around 6$ per frame. (40 series are sitting at 10-14$ per frame for reference)
If you're like me and exhausted with NVIDIA's behavior, and want to try an AMD GPU (but realize their new ones are bad value just like 40 series), this is definitely the one to buy while its in stock and manufacturers are trying to sell these older cards. The RDNA2 architecture is very matured at this point and this card is basically plug n play with zero need for tuning and no stability issues like you'll find on the new RDNA3 cards, and you don't have to deal with a stupid power adapter or an oversized cooler. 10/10 would buy again.
That said this card is awesome paired with a R7 58003DX it's a beast. I only have a 1440p 144hz monitor but it blows through all my games with ease. I cannot wait till I get a 4k monitor. For VR sim racing and flight sims, the fps are so stable it's unbelievable. MSFS is the only sim where I cannot crank settings up, but it is playable. Assetto Corsa Competizione one of the toughest games to run in VR native resolution, Rift S and Quest 2 Runs beautifully no stutters. It's a great card on my monitor with games I am able to fully max out settings and enjoy high stable frame rates.
This cards often ran very hot, junction temp climbed up to 100C easily while the fan became too loud to ignore without using headphones. When I tried a 6800 XT from the same series (MSI Gaming Trio) it had similar issues, but maybe I've just been unlucky with the cards I got.
This is also the card with the most coil whine out of all 69x0 XT I've tested so far (Sapphire 6900 XT Toxic LE, ASRock 6900 XT Formula OC, PowerColor 6950 XT Red Devil, and this MSI).
Something to keep in mind with this card as well is that while being one of the shortest 69x0 XT available, it is quite a high card, which caused some trouble for my when installing it in an ITX case, especially with thicker PCIe power cables connecting to the top of the card.
In a larger, well ventilated case this will be a good card for a high end system, but it certainly is not worth the $60+ premium over other AIB cards (which are frequently available for around $700 now in Feb. 2023). A positive aspect is that this card comes with a stabilizing bracket that gets screwed down to the case's rear IO slot panels together with the card, important for regular horizontal installations.
It was to be my Crowning Achievement in both my PC Hardware Evolution, as well as my own Apex of PC building Knowledge:
The AMD CPU was the 5800x3d, and the 6950x GPU was to be its partner. So I did the homework, the budgeting, and got an MSI X570 MEG and an MSI GAMING TRIO 6950xt.
The CPU went on to live elsewhere, but the motherboard is gone now, along with the AMD tuned RAM, both given as a gift as part of another build for Christmas. So the 6950xt is in a box downstairs in the closet.
Only after I paired it with another motherboard and different RAM, All to the same bitter end.
And again with more different stuff.
So Many Drivers, Driver Cleaning, Safe Mode, Windows Downloading and uninstalling and repeat. ARRRRGGGGHHHH!
And when I registered it, the qar upc code was in a different place. And it would not register. And when I tried tech support, it was always drivers, windows, program s, and they had No Idea why it was different, but supposedly Real from MSI?
Ya, Whatever, The Thing Gave me a coronary and I Hate it.

I bought a Ryzen 9 3950x 32 gb, MSI Radeon 6800xt, Mobo. Strix gaming.
Random crashes, a lot of them, changed my corsair AX1200 psu, no dice, the new psu a rm1000 died within 2 weeks, changed the ram to corsair 3600,couldnt use xmp, had to run at stock, crashes, and 3 boots white Led on the motherboard 4thy boot green and windows loaded..
Changed mobo to a Gigabyte Aorus no boot at all.
Changed cpu to Ryzen 9 5950x, same thing, change motherboard to crosshair hero, crashed again, reduced the pcie from 4x to 3 x stable working fine most of the time..
I had to use a single monitor as everything crashed my pc..
I undervolted the card, over volted the card, everything I can think off.. cpu, ram etc.. NO DICE !!
Changed the videocard (today) to the 6950x and pcie x4, resize bar, I even use a pcie 4.0 riser now and have 2 monitors connected.. running in 4k.
The last thing in the world I was expecting was the old Msi 6800xt..
Im not a noob in computers as I have built enough of them.. (at least 80 gaming pc`s, I started tinkering with computers when Amstrads came out, I got a degree in I.T.
Put the same card on a normal pc (normal specs, Ryzen 7, 32 gb ram, strix mobo. and it works perfectly, no problems !!!
Some of these cards can act wierd !!!
The moral of the story is learn from my stress !!! in case you have the same problems !
