Alright. Let’s get the main thing off of the board.
I don’t like JK Rowling. I’m a pretty casual Harry Potter enjoyer. But I still wanted to see what Hogwarts Legacy had in store. After all it’s been a long time since we’ve gotten something in this genre. That being said. If you are looking for an excuse not to buy the game, take it. If you want to buy the game, buy it.
With that being said. Let’s get into technicals.
• Hogwarts Legacy is a very beautiful game (I have the PS5 version. With the last gen versions on the way I would warn to stay away from the Switch Port if you deeply care about graphics. I love the Switch but you don’t play Switch for high def graphics and frame rate so to speak. You will be getting a dumb downed version of this game.) Hogwarts Legacy was carefully crafted and painfully detailed. The locales are gorgeous and pretty true to the movies. Hogwarts itself is naturally the best looking location. It’s stunning. Whether you’re flying on your broom over the countryside or going to class, every part of this game looks GOOD.
And the game looking good contributes to how cinematic this game feels. You really feel like you’re there sometimes.
• You can tell developers wanted to stick it to Rowling a little bit. I doubt she cares, but a trans woman as an important piece of the story was a genuine surprise. This doesn’t erase Rowling’s actions. But don’t walk into this thinking you’re fully sticking it to the woke folk either. Professors are all different ethnicities and backgrounds. There’s a lesbian woman. Etc. I’m just telling it like it is. This is a reality of the game. If that makes you mad that’s a you problem.
And a you problem is the best kind of problem, because that means it’s not mine.
• Flight controls feel great. Flying feels great. Wow. Not involving Qudditch was an insane missed opportunity. I know everyone has probably complained about that, but I feel it’s a fair nitpick. Watching the countryside glide underneath you and flying around buildings is a seriously stunning piece of the game.
• There are plenty of collectibles to keep you busy. And the game is kind enough to require you to get most, but not all for most categories, for a platinum achievement. Getting collectibles and secrets feels like a natural part of the game. I never feel like I’m slogging through. Which is great since those collectibles are directly tied to your experience, leveling, and inventory. I dare say it’s required, but I never ran out of finding stuff so you barely notice that it IS a requirement. You’ll get what you need through regular play.
I don’t love having to do the searching spell every ten seconds though. Don’t love that.
• Making it so you can wear any cosmetic regardless of what you ACTUALLY have on is always a blessing. I don’t want to look like I got dressed in the dark.
• I’m 50% of the way through the story and by golly. It’s so fun. Placing the setting before Harry Potter so you can really experience it for yourself was such a good call. I don’t have to compete for main character status and that was a great choice. The game immediately starts on a high note and just keeps on chugging.
I find the game starts to lag with side quests however. It’s very standard fair. I’ve done all my side quests thus far, but I wouldn’t say most were notable or special. Not bad. Just eh. You get good loot though. So I would encourage you to do them anyway.
• Locking certain cosmetics behind Twitch streams was lame. I have them all. I know this has become more standard practice. But I just don’t agree with it. Especially the Merlin’s cloak (which you can only get on the official Hogwarts Legacy stream, not affiliates) I find it was just a waste of my time. Put on Twitch and then ignore it for a long time. Boo. Also charging $20 to get the cosmetics that came with the deluxe edition is GARBAGE. I got the deluxe edition, but I think that’s too much money for too little in return if you only got the regular edition.
Overall I DO recommend picking this up. It’s a great game. But don’t feel peer pressured for either camp. Do what makes you feel right.
Graphics for the PS5 are outstanding. Game play - I'm getting used to it. Downside is I was in the middle of a few other things from other franchises, so I had planned on only dedicating a bit of time to this at the moment until I finish up what I was in the middle of. But since I was in the middle of something I was doing not for the first time, I've figured I'm going to stick with this now and push through.
This won't be the normal first person shooter. Lots of dialog, lots of cut scenes. You do have the option to skip them, but at least for the first playthrough, I'm letting them go completely through. I've never been much of a fan of the third person point of view, but it's workable here at least.
The magic system is pretty well laid out. Attack, defense, and individual things like light and such all revolve around the right trigger and other options you can do at the same time with the action buttons. It will take a bit getting used to but at least so far the layout seems to be easy to work with and to remember.
The graphics for the magic is pretty seamless and smooth, done nicely.
So far, no bugs, glitches, or other problems. I'm running it on the highest option for visual quality on the PS5 and it's been working just fine.
There's going to be so much here to delve into, even for someone like me who only had a passing interest. I'm kind of glad there was such a controversy about this, otherwise I would've missed what appears to be one of the more engrossing, in depth games I've played in a long time.
Is it game of the year? Probably not. Is there a great chance it will be in the top 10 and maybe top 5? Yes. First game I've bought in a long time that I didn't regret paying full price for.
Couple things to watch out for. First is to sign up for your house and wand through the WB site before you start if you want to. It can't be changed once picked. Talent points are permanent and can't be changed. You will not have enough to get everything. Also, make sure you read the case inserts and actually use the codes to redeem any cosmetics or the Dark Arts pack. They don't get installed automatically.
