The greatest thing is the graphics. They're amazing and make the game so much more. It loads fast too, which is a plus.
The only reason why I don't give it 5 stars is because for some stupid reason (yes, stupid) the team behind Gran Turismo made the game so that it requires a constant Internet connection just to play! If for some reason you lose Internet access temporarily, then you can't do anything except some boring and utterly pointless oval race over and over. I don't know why the makers of Gran Turismo 7 couldn't figure out a simple offline progression save. Besides that though, if you were worried that this might be another "Sport" it's not - Gran Turismo 7 is a real Gran Turismo entry 100%!
TLDR: This game is nothing more than gambling mechanics and artificial difficulty masquerading as a racing simulator in order to compensate for a lack of content, to force you into microtransactions, and/or to maintain their daily user base for their in-game sponsorships. Without sever connectivity, however, this game works exceedingly well as a paperweight.
After owning this game for a month, it is intensely frustrating to obtain cars as well as upgrades. The game creator said the in-game pricing is supposed to reflect real life... However, a simple search reveals that they have cherry-picked the highest price for any given car. Mind you, these are auction prices which are entirely circumstantial and do not translate to a video game. For instance, the pricing for a used DeLorean DMC-12 (an obscene 450,000 credits!) is seemingly based on the auction price for one that was on the actual set of "Back to the Future." If realism was the goal, the price should be around 40,000 to 80,000 credits. The whole game is a flagrant cash grab and the creator, Kazunori, is unashamed.
Here's a list of other things I loathe:
**Certain car upgrades can ONLY be obtained from loot boxes, such as final stage engine and weight reduction upgrades as well as the carbon fiber drive shaft upgrade.**
**Upgrades obtained by loot boxes are tied to a random car that you may or may not own.**
**No ability to sell cars nor any useless upgrades.**
**The only way to purchase certain cars is to obtain an "invitation" from a loot box, which expires after a week or so and you lose the opportunity to purchase the car until you reobtain an invitation from another loot box.**
**As far as I know, loot boxes are only obtainable from Cafe missions and/or driving 26.2 miles in game per day (which takes 10 to 20 minutes a day on most tracks).**
**There are 5 different tiers of loot boxes, higher tiers have "better" prizes but regardless of tier, the odds are highly skewed to lesser prizes.**
**The odds of getting a higher tier loot boxes is also skewed much lower.**
**Tire dynamics are exaggerated and unphysical, especially in rain.**
**Performance points (PP) are almost arbitrary, certain cars can outperform cars at the same PP in every metric.**
**Most races have a staggered start, where you always start last, the best competitor cars start at the front, and the time gap between you and the lead car is around 30-45 seconds.**
**If realistic pricing was the goal, racing tires would not cost as much as some entry level cars.**
**So far, fully upgrading a car can cost 150,000-500,000 credits.**
**Reverting certain upgrades to stock costs significantly more than the original vehicle price.**
**Camshafts are considered a permanent upgrade for whatever reason.**
**There is a limit to the amount of credits you can earn by racing, but no limit for the credits purchased through microtransactions.**
**The bad outweighs the good for me.**
Edit 1:
Servers have been down for over 24 hours bringing my review down to 1 star.
Original review:
Gran Turismo 5 and 6 were my some of my all time favorite games, but I skipped GT Sport due to the lack of features and server dependency. With it being nearly 10 years since having a true Gran Turismo game, I caved and bought GT7 at launch.
The game is mostly great when it works, and while it works a lot of the time, today it doesn't. Their servers are experiencing prolonged server maintenance.
Now, I realize just how horrible the game is when it cannot connect to their servers. The game becomes less than a demo. You lose access to all single player features, other than a limited arcade mode and some music themed time trials.
While Polyphony has a good track record of maintaining their servers long term, once they stop, the game is bricked. People should realize "Network connection required" transcends just having internet access. You're 100% dependent, not just on the game developer's game servers being operational, but also on Sony's networking servers.
Networking issues aside, I'm not a fan of the economy in the game. It seems inflation has made its way even into virtual worlds. Be prepared to grind.
In summary, I think I've finally found a game worse or at least on par with 2K, both in economy and DRM!
