Pros:
1.) Really small, at 6.9" x 2" x 5.4", 1.74lbs. Easy to throw into a bag with the included soft case.
2.) Comes with a small remote for the (few) adjustments you can make.
3.) Powers on instantly. I have a Sony home cinema projector (VPL-HW50ES) which takes a minute to power up, the lamp to brighten etc. The Viewsonic PLED-W600 is on in a blink of an eye. Push the power button, and - there it is: your image, at full brightness. LEDs = instant on, instant brightness.
4.) Powers off instantly, too. As with many (all?) projectors, the power button (either on the remote or the unit itself) needs to be pressed twice to power the unit off. This is more of a necessity on lamp-based projectors since the manufacturer wants you to be sure you want to put your projector through another heat/cold cycle. On these LED-based projectors, I'm not sure that functionality is needed anymore...
5.) Image quality is very good at native resolution. I didn't notice any oddities with text or pictures when connected to my Dell Inspiron i3148-6840sLV 11.6-Inch 2 in 1 Convertible Touchscreen Laptop (Intel Core i3 Processor, 4GB RAM) with the included HDMI cable.
6.) For giggles, I loaded up a movie to see how it would fare, and surprisingly - it did pretty well. Quite a satisfactory image, and audio was piped through the Vewsonic's speaker. I wouldn't recommend using the on-board speaker for movie audio, but it certainly works in a pinch.
7.) 30,000 hours life, which is excellent.
8.) Easily fills an 80" image size with reasonably controlled lighting.
9.) Features a tripod mount for location flexibility.
Cons:
1.) The unit has two small fans on the side, and... they're quite loud. They run from the second you turn the projector on, as expected, and they ramp up immediately to quite a volume, easily heard in a quiet room from 20 feet away. The fans need to run fast as you can feel the heat they expel. A search through the options revealed a "High Altitude" mode (standard on projectors), and with that enabled the fan noise is of course even louder - reminding me of a screaming child. Not pleasant. Thankfully I live close to sea level.
2.) Slightly noticeable electrical noise when a signal is passing through the projector. If you have to sit near the projector, you might notice this, depending on your sensitivities to coil whine.
3.) No manual/analog zoom adjustment (just a focus wheel on the projector itself). You move the projector back or forward in the room to set image size.
Overall, this is a solid, if unremarkable projector. The biggest downer has to be the noise it makes, which is perhaps unsurprising: Small devices have small fans, and small fans can be quite noisy when pushed hard. If it weren't for this drawback, this would be a highly recommended projector. But as it is...
4 stars out of 5.
The only way to control the size of the image on your projection surface is based on the distance from your projection surface. Want the image smaller? You need to move it closer. Want it bigger? You need to move it away. There's no control on the projector that allows you to alter the size of the projection image from a fixed projector position. This is problematic for an "ultra-portable" projector. Depending upon the image size you need or desire, you will need to position the projector at exactly a specific distance from the projection surface, so you will need to make sure you have a table (or tripod) available to accommodate that need. This also is complicated by the length of the power cable, which will need access to a power outlet, and the HDMI cable needed to connect the projector to your device. This may or may not be convenient. In my experience, I have found it incredibly inconvenient. The end result is that you'll need to position the projector in an inconvenient location, use an extension cord, and make sure you have a long-enough HDMI cable (or a wireless solution) to connect to your source device.
My other complaint is that the projector only supports HDMI. While this is incredibly common, it is also very short-sighted. I also have an HDMI dongle that allows me to connect wirelessly from my phone or laptop, but if you are using a device with something other than HDMI, you are out of luck.
From an image perspective, however, I have been quite pleased with the image quality, with one caveat. This projector is only 600 lumens, so it is not very bright. In a subdued-lighting or dark room situation, it is great. However, in a room with ambient daylight or other lighting that can't be controlled, 600 lumens isn't enough to cut through the light. Therefore, this is just another potential issue which affects whether you can use this in a specific location as a portable projector.
All of that said, the image quality is decent, and very good at 720p. For fast moving images, such as video, there is no ghosting or other image artifacts. It has a very good response and the image is always perfectly synchronized to the audio. One thing to keep in mind is that it will resize a laptop image to 1280 x 800, so your desktop will rescale accordingly. This is a bit jarring if you are using a very high resolution on your laptop.
The projector has preprogrammed modes that adjust image quality based on content, adjusting brightness, contrast, and color automatically.
It features an auto-keystone feature -- which can be turned off -- so that the projector will automatically adjust the "keystone" of the image when you tilt the front of the projector up at an angle not perpendicular to your projection surface. In nearly every instance, I've found this to be very accurate, and have never wanted to turn this feature off.
The built-in speaker, rated at 2 watts, is quite useful, and much better than I expected. For video with dialog, it is actually quite clear and perfect for a small room with little background noise. It also features a 3.5 mm output so you can connect to headphones or another sound system.
There is a USB port, but on this model, it can only be used for charging another device. You cannot use it present documents from a USB drive. It provides sufficient power to charge a tablet or to power an HDMI dongle for video presentations, when such a dongle requires an external power source.
The remote control is handy, and has several dedicated buttons that fortunately prevent you from having to access the somewhat confusing settings menu. One button is clearly labeled "My Button", which you can assign to a particular function -- such as changing the resolution, for example. You can also control the speaker volume, the keystone, the color mode presets, and the audio mode presets. It also allows you to access some digital features, such as the ability to zoom and freeze the image.
This is an ultra-portable, and isn't meant to serve as a "home theater" solution. It definitely isn't bright enough for that under normal viewing conditions. However, if you need a projector that you want to use occasionally in multiple rooms or at various locations, this would probably work well for you.
