I've only had it for less than 24 hrs but this feels just like my old baby. I still love it. Now, I've read a lot of reviews that criticize huawei going away from the elegant look of the watch 1 and going with the sportier look of the watch 2. I've seen some reviews saying that huawei tried to pack too much into this watch. Maybe some of that is true. All personal opinion. Just don't be afraid to get it.
The screen is smaller. There's no doubt. But is it too small? No... It appears even smaller because of the thicker bezel compared to the watch 1. But to be honest, it doesn't really bother me.
The watch is on the bigger side and hence I wouldn't think that many women would want this. That being said my wife who is 5 feet tall and slim said it's not all that big and she's considering it.
I compare this 2nd gen watch to the first generation by saying to think of a dressy citizen watch compared to a casio sports watch. Only for looks though. Sure the 2nd gen is more plastic like but I think that goes with the sporty idea. (I was corrected... It's made of a high end ceramic material that's found in high end watches. It just looks plastic but will perform much much better)
I still would have preferred huawei stick with a style like the original. That would have worked great if they released one of each style.
Android pay is pretty neat. But one miss... And I'm still exploring this feature... U need to have lockscreen on for android pay to work. OK that makes sense that u need some security on the watch for android pay to work but I feel that security should be tied to the program only. Something that shows up only when accessing Android pay. Not a general lockscreen that makes you unlock the watch almost every time you look at it.
Update... I didn't use android pay for quite a while because the lockscreen function became so annoying. I was unlocking almost every time to get my messages etc. So I stopped. Recently I decided to try it again and I was very pleased to find out that the lockscreen function has been modified and is much much better. I still haven't figured out exactly what the pattern is. I think it's one unlock while on Ur wrist and it'll stay unlocked until you take it off?? I worked a 12 hr day today and I don't remember unlocking except first thing this morning. Then I took it off and I had to unlock it. I can definitely live with that. Wouldn't mind if it locked every 4 hrs or so. Just not every single time.
I'm reviewing the watch and not Android wear. I think the lockscreen thing is an operating system miss, not a watch miss. The watch is solid. It's not perfect by any means. I like the bezel idea from the Samsung gear and the spinning button idea from here lg watch. But overall, this is a very good smartwatch that gives me most of what I want.
I charged it full last night, set it up and played with it and left it sitting overnight. It's going on almost 24 hrs off charger and it's at 42%. That's one thing that they did well... Bump up the size of the battery. I was always amazed at how that small battery in the watch 1 could last all day easily. Now with a battery that's like 40% higher in capacity... 2 days of regular usage isn't out of the possibility.
If you are in the market for a smartwatch, huawei has put out some lovely pieces. Don't forget about the first one. It's still out there and it's only a year old. The processor, memory and battery isn't as good as the watch 2 but the watch 1 kicks butt for style. And that's probably why my wife will end up getting one of the watch 1's.
I've personally never been an LG fan when it comes to phones and smartwatches. I've known a few people who owned the g4 and watched as that one died a miserable demise. I just don't get good vibes about their products. This is my opinion and why I didn't go with the lg watch sport or style. Maybe their urbane 2 watch will be better.
Samsung makes a good watch but given that they only recently opened up the ability of those wearables to work with all phones I'm still a little leary about their line. It works best with Samsung phones. I'm also not sure about their own proprietary watch software Tizen OS. And that's one of the big reasons I didn't go with them. Samsung to me goes overboard with flooding the market with products that tie you to there other products. They seem to like that control. So I avoid them when I can.
So there you have my thoughts about the smartwatch market. Or a brief summary of it and why I came to get the next generation of the huawei watch. It's all about your expectations and needs in the watch. If u want total standalone function with network capabilities, samsung or lg then. But if Ur looking for something that works when connected to a phone and has some functions as a standalone unit, then huawei watch 2 it is.
I had to give this watch 5 Stars. This does not mean that the device is 100% perfect, but it does mean that the cost, features, functions and user-friendliness merited a pretty good deal in my eyes. I have been ducking the smart watch craze for some time, and things seem to have slowed down on the non-apple front so I figured why not jump in on a watch that debuted last year and get a good deal. And it doesn't get much better than the Huawei Watch 2, at 230 something dollars.
I am a former professional athletic coach, and a fairly tech savvy individual. As a result I feel I am qualified to break down the device. Please bear in mind I've been using the watch only for about a week now, so I cannot speak on long-term reliability/hardware issues:
Pros:
- Heart rate monitor is accurate and simple to use
- Real time heart rate is displayed continuously
- Pairs flawlessly with an Android Device(am using an LG phone)
- Many watch faces to choose from that can display all kinds of updates such as air quality, weather, notifications, heart rate, or updates from about just any app
- Looks sharp, is very comfortable, and appears quite durable
- Screen clarity and crispness is incredible, as is brightness
- User interface is fairly intuitive but does take some practice for the non-techy types (The Apple watch will be easier to use than this)
- Can stream music, manage phone calls, and has Google assistant
- Superb for fitness, will revolutionize how you train (Huawei Health on your actual phone is a must to maximize these benefits, Google Fit is not great with this device)
- Sleep monitoring is excellent when using the Huawei Health app in conjunction with the watch's sleep app
- Battery life is incredible the watch charges VERY fast
- Very comfortable to wear
Cons:
- OK Google just simply works better on your phone
- Can take some getting used to
- Must use phone apps to pull proper data on sleep and fitness from the watch; Must use Huawei Health
- Watch band could use some smaller notches, I am an adult man with small wrists and if it's not completely tight on your wrists the Heart Rate feature may not work as well (beware to the skinny or petit women and children)
- On Amazon it looks like the watch has neon green accents for the grey model, even Cnet lists it as being neon green- it is actually yellow and I was a bit disappointed but am learning to live with it since it is after all a sport watch
- Fairly limited functionality when your phone dies or is not nearby; Wi-fi connectivity issues do occur and public networks that have web browser logins may be inaccessible
With all that being said here, I think the watch is pretty amazing for 200 dollars, however I think this is going to benefit the sports minded individual the most. Some features of the Samsung watches seem like they would be cooler for every day use(magnetic stripe Samsung Pay abilities, Samsung watches simply look the more professional than their competitors in my eyes). The battery life however is great, the watch is very cool, and the screen looks incredible. I really cannot emphasize enough how detailed and incredibly accurate the sleep analysis app is from Huawei when used with their counterpart Huawei Health phone app. I Highly recommend this device!
