As you guys know, AirPods does not so great job on noise cancellation because it's not in-ear. The optimal moment for me with AirPods was when I wipe my ear and my AirPods with a tissue and make them both full of friction (by wiping out earwax or any sort of dust), I could put them in my ears and feel some sort of closed environment for the sound. E8 didn't need that. I had E8 2.0 on my ears, walked right through the busiest area, and did not hear much from the environment even though I wasn't blasting my music.
2. Sound quality
I've been using AirPods for quite a while and was so used to its sound. When I put E8 2.0 on, I suddenly realized less bass and more highs, which was what I expected after using a couple of B&O's products (Beoplay A2 and H8). At first, E8 2.0 sound sounded pretty annoyingly with loud highs and also sounded low quality, less superior, etc because of less bass (I felt AirPods bass made AirPods' sound relatively superior to E8's. Plus, one of the reviews I read online mentioned how B&O E8 2.0 did not choose Bluetooth 5.x but 4.2, which is what AirPods 1 has. AirPods 2 has 5.0. So my ears were pretty biased by those reviews). Then, I decided to become more used to E8 first so I could compare AirPods' sound to E8's rather than E8's to AirPods'. After 2 hours of listening to classical, pop, jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, I again became very used to those highs and less bass, and when I listened to AirPods, I felt too much bass hitting in. Plus, with those highs gone in AirPods, I felt some part of sound missing, because those highs really amplified the high buzzing sound in live orchestra recordings and pedal stepping sounds in some piano songs (if you care for more details, when I listened with E8, I felt like I was listening in a room with very high ceiling. When I put AirPods, I felt like that room got much smaller and more of cube looking room). Furthermore, I just could not stand outside noise coming through AirPods.
3. If you are trying to work out with E8
When I jumped very hard and shook my face up and down, side by side very hard, E8 stood still (I wore the largest silicone when I did this because my ear holes are pretty big lol). I tried running with them on and it didn't bother them either. I haven't tried them when I'm working while sweating but I'm willing to add them in this review if I feel like E8 doesn't work well with sweats. Again, that outside source of the review I read mentioned E8 is not designed for workouts but who knows. One thing I have in mind about E8 is that because of its great noise cancellation, when I become sweaty, suddenly the whole closed sound experience would be gone. Also, from my experience with in-ear earphones, when I get sweaty, the silicones do not really hold well in my ears. So I guess I (or you) just need to try.
4. Miscellaneous
If you are used to AirPods hit-interface (hitting AirPods for changing music and etc), you might feel a little impatient with unresponsive E8 2.0; it almost requires the full face of your fingertip interaction rather than just hitting. Also, if you liked how you could change double tap interactions with AirPods (hackability of AirPods!!!), E8 does not have any customizable interactions so you just need to find ones that you do not want to use and avoid them. For me, ones I did not want to use were: ear-detection (when you take one out, it stops music automatically. With E8, it kinda works when you take off right side out but you could later tell that when you make the pair apart from each other, it just stops the left one only so you could say it's almost like ear-detection but not really), transparency (it lets you hear your surrounding... idk why it's necessary), and voice action (Siri kinda like thing). Other than these, I liked how you could control your volume with touch and hold, and tracks with single and double tappings.
Hope this helps in your expensive decision!
When researching these earphones, I was not aware of the upcoming Apple AirPods Pro, and most likely would have purchased those instead.
SOUND
I think the sound quality is good, not great. They are an improvement over the $30 Sony MDRXB50AP earbuds I had been using for the last 3+ years; but they also cost 10x as much.
I find that the quality of your source makes a big difference. New music designed to be downloaded or streamed sounds great; 80s music as well as older jazz and classical recordings sound flat.
The B&O app has 4 presets plus the ability to manually create your own. It does not use a graphic equalizer; it's more of a "drag your finger around a circle until it sounds good" thing. I personally use the "Workout" preset which adds more "warmth" and it's fine for me.
All that being said, if these were $300 over-ear closed-back headphones with 50mm drivers, I'd expect a lot more.
BATTERY LIFE
I'm disappointed with the battery life as I have never been able to get more than 2.5 hours of use from a full charge. This is significantly lower than the 4 hours advertised. What's even more frustrating is that the app will say they are fully charged all the way up until they run out of juice.
CONNECTION
I generally experience no connectivity issues on a day-to-day basis. I do recall one morning on the train where they disconnected for a few seconds and my music started blasting out of my phone (I was using the Sirius XM app, so perhaps that had something to do with it). That's been an isolated incident so far though.
NOISE CANCELATION
Using the Comply foam tips, the passive noise cancelation is decent. If you are listening to more relaxing music or talk radio, you'll get some background noise. More intense music like EDM or Hip Hop at a moderate volume will block out a lot of noise. It's definitely enough to miss your stop on a train if you aren't paying attention. Also worth mentioning that it's enough to prevent you from hearing people say "excuse me" when on a crowded train, so get in the habit of looking around to see if others are trying to get off the train when approaching a stop.
Keep in mind, if you really need noise cancelation, get a nice pair of active noise canceling headphones - don't abuse your eardrums with excessively loud music.
AMBIENT SOUND
Pressing the left earphone will pipe the outside world into your earphones using the microphone. It's definitely useful, but the sound quality isn't great. There is some noticeable static and voices sound robotic. However, if you do need to talk to somebody, it will get the job done.
I do use it frequently since the "pause" gesture on the right earphone doesn't work for me. Using the ambient sound feature will pause whatever your playing, so this works for me.
Mike Wat on YouTube compared the Sennheiser directly to the B&O, and concluded that the Sennheiser's ambient sound pass-through is much clearer, if this interests you.
MICROPHONE
I've had to use these on conference calls a few times. My coworkers were able to hear me just fine, but there was a lot of background noise. I would NOT recommend these if you need to make a lot of calls while walking around the city.
To be fair, based on all the video reviews I've watched, all of the truly wireless earphones struggle in this area. AirPods seem to be the best option if you need a decent mic.
COMFORT / FIT
The headphones stay put and feel very secure. I do not run or do Crossfit, so there's no way these will ever fall out of my ears. If you are doing those kinds of workouts, you should just buy Powerbeats.
AESTHETICS
I think these are great looking, but you will stand out especially if you live in a city where everybody has AirPods. People just aren't used to seeing large pieces of black plastic in your ears.
APP
B&O have always been about aesthetics. Their web design is exceptional, so I went into the app with high expectations. The app is also well designed and easy to use. After downloading the app, it walked me through the initial pairing. It also prompted me to update the firmware on the headphones, which took 10 minutes to complete.
Like I mentioned above, the battery indicator in the app is useless. This seems like a software issue and will hopefully be resolved. Essentially, it says my headphones are at 100% all the way until they die (and subsequently disconnect).
CASE
This was one of the killer features for me, as I really wanted Qi wireless charging like the AirPods. I also absolutely had to have USB-C on the case, which these have. A USB-A to USB-C cable is included and it is reasonably long.
There are 3 lights on the back of the case to indicate how much reserve power the case has. There is one (very elegant) amber light on the front of the case that turns to green when the headphones are charged.
Note that if the case itself is not plugged in or on a charging mat, the light doesn't stay on. Given that the app doesn't tell me how much battery life they have, I just have to assume that after a couple hours in the case, the headphones are fully charged. There's also no way for me to see the reserve power of the case, unless it is charging itself. I suppose I would have liked for the case to light up when it's touched, since I understand leaving the lights on permanently would drain the battery.
Aesthetically, the case is better looking and appears to be higher quality than the Sennheiser and Master Dynamic cases. The Sony case is the best though, in my opinion.
SUMMARY
You have a few options in this price range. Based on reviews, Sennheiser has the best sound quality, Sony has the best noise cancelation, and Master Dynamic have the best YouTube commercials.
If you're planning on buying over-ear headphones in addition to wireless earphones, you may want to consider sticking with one brand so you don't need multiple apps on your phone.
At the time, I felt B&O provided a really nice overall package for what I wanted; however, if the Apple AirPods Pro were available, I may have made a different decision.
