About the author
Michael Wohl is best known for his role as one of the original designers of Apple’s legendary film editing tool Final Cut Pro. That software was a fundamental part of a technological revolution that democratized filmmaking and enabled millions of people to raise their voices and tell their stories.
He is also an award-winning filmmaker himself, with nearly two decades of experience across genres, styles, and formats. He has won awards and acknowledgments at many film festivals and competitions including the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle award. He’s been the co-founder of several production companies including Talkingstick Pictures, where he and his team spent four years documenting Ethiopia’s Agricultural Transformation Agency; an ambitious and inspirational effort to overhaul agricultural practices for that country’s millions of rural smallholder farmers. This project was facilitated by The Synergos Institute and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Other clients include Apple, Adobe, and Pearson Education.
He has also maintained a parallel career as an author, professor, and educator. He is the author of over a dozen books on the art and craft of filmmaking, which have sold tens of thousands of copies and have been translated into six languages. He served for eight years as an adjunct professor at UCLA’s Graduate School of Film and TV. He has been invited to speak at myriad film festivals and conferences including Sundance, SXSW, NAB, IBC, and many others, and his hundreds of hours of online training courses are among the highest rated at AskVideo.com.
Michael is also the principal baker at Burlesque Buns, a delivery-only bakery focused on traditional Jewish breads, pastries, and treats. He is also the founder of Bread Heals, a culinary curation club which seeks to break the boundaries that divide us through the shared joy of breaking bread.

They come with a DVD to follow and practice the exercises and the book is excellent too.
Here's the thing - even though it's been a few years since the redesign, a lot of FCP7 users are just now finally coming to grips that they will have to make the switch. Hanging on to the old version (which is still better in my opinion, as of this writing) will not keep you current. Younger editors are coming into the workforce using FCPX, Premiere, etc. and they will do their work faster than "old timers" because those programs utilize the 64-bit architecture. The new plugins and effects that look modern and cool are all being made for the new programs so you can't take advantage of the current video styles unless you make the switch to a 64-bit program.
I suggest reading this book cover to cover one time if you're getting ready to switch from FCP7 to FCPX or if you are totally new to video editing. There's A LOT of information to learn and you can't grasp it all at once. Just let the ideas wash over you and get used to the concepts. This way, when you go back to page one and start practicing with the program along with the book, you'll feel more confident and your learning process will go more smoothly.
