Once Upon a Time . . . The Western: A New Frontier in Art and Film Hardcover – June 30, 2019

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

The Western is the quintessential American epic—a mythic story of nation building, triumphs, failures, and fantasies. This book accompanies the first major exhibition to examine the Western genre and its evolution from the mid-1800s in fine art, film, and popular culture, exploring gender roles, race relations, and gun violence—a story that is about more than cowboys and American Indians, pursuits and duels, or bandits and barroom brawls. From 19th-century landscape paintings by Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Remington to works by Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and Kent Monkman; from the legends of “Buffalo Bill” Cody and Billy the Kid to John Ford’s classic films and Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Westerns and recent productions by Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee, and Joel and Ethan Coen, The Western observes how the mythology of the West spread throughout the world and endures today.

Beautiful book that was published to accompany an exhibition about 'The Western' at the Denver Art Museum and Montreal Museum of Fine Art. It looks at the western in art and popular culture (mostly films) with pieces written from a range of contributors. It has interesting insights and high quality colour images that will keep you page turning.

Stumbled across this hefty volume by accident while on holiday. - those Angel Eyes caught my attention from across the bookshop. Would have taken me over my baggage limit so I had to order it from the usual. A great read for genre fans - brings out the visual legacy of artists like Remington (one of John Ford's inspirations) through to Leone and beyond. A good selection of essays from some familiar (and many unfamiliar) names but its the pictures that make this one. Recommended.
