Dr Danny Penman is a meditation teacher and an award winning writer and journalist. He
is co-author of the million-selling 'Mindfulness: An Eight Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World'. He has received journalism awards from the Humane Society of the United States and the RSPCA. In 2014, he won the British Medical Association’s Best Book (Popular Medicine) Award for 'Mindfulness for Health: A Practical Guide to Relieving Pain, Reducing Stress and Restoring Wellbeing' (published in the US as 'You Are Not Your Pain'). His books have been translated into more than 30 languages. His journalism has appeared in the Daily Mail, New Scientist, The Guardian, CNN and the BBC. He trained to teach mindfulness with the acclaimed Breathworks.

Dr Penman has been a keen meditator since his teenage years. He discovered mindfulness meditation in 2006 following a terrible paragliding accident that left him temporarily crippled and in constant pain. He was so surprised by how effective a painkiller (and stress-reliever) the meditations proved to be, that he sought out Professor Mark Williams of Oxford University, the co-developer of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. The pair then wrote 'Mindfulness: An Eight Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World'.

Dr Penman recovered from his paragliding injuries in record time and he is now a keen runner, cyclist, and long-distance hiker. He credits his recovery, in large part, to the meditations he has practiced since his accident.

I have loved this book since the moment I heard the author reading, calmly and thoughtfully, felt the texture of the cover, noted the carefully presented premises broken artistically into vivsibly digestible bits. I immediately thought "This man understands me!...How difficult is for me to focus, to stay on task, to calm my traumatized brain and heart, my need to be entertained or intrigued to persevere in what I initially dive into - only to lose interest. Bravo! Dr Penman. I have referred my clients to this book and fear that I will buy up all of the used copies. Please have a second printing. I need your belp to soothe my patients' broken hearts and brains! (As you ha e soothed my own...)

I think this book is more or less in the "less is more" category that reminds me what I do mindfully is more important than what I know about mindfulness. I bought a copy to give to an 80 year old friend and a copy for my 30+ year old daughter to read to my 5 year old grandson (two birds at once). I read this book one thought at a time and enjoy it thoroughly.
I may be a little ambitious about the grandson. I'll write back in 10 years.

Simple breath work guide with lovely illustrations. I enjoyed reading this small book and the related story was interesting. I like how well it explains the different breathing exercise with a focus on mindfulness.

Dr. Penman includes sections on breathing, happiness, curiosity and awareness, that are straight (or circular) to the point(s), easy to understand, and even easier to practice. There is also a link included to an online site that has all of the meditations available. The art of breathing is an international best-seller, and when you get your copy you will see why.

El libro viene usado y en mal estado. Me daria absolutamente igual que el libro fuese de segunda mano, pero viene con páginas rotas, subrayado y con páginas marcadas. Lamentable.

1.0 out of 5 stars No substance

This book is a big let down. It is a small book to begin with and it has just about 10-20 lines of text on each page. Most of the book is about meditation and not breathing. So if you are looking for a breath awareness book, look elsewhere. And it kind of just scratches the surface of meditation. I dont know how this book got so many positive reviews. Very disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A calming and inspiring audiobook
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2017
I first got the AUDIOBOOK as a free Amazon trial from Audible, having seen Danny Penman talking on TV, and heard Oxford centre 8-week course recordings. I bought the book for my daughter for Christmas. I found the audiobook was excellent. It puts things in a nutshell; thoughts and practices that you might have pondered for years are explained simply and concisely. Particularly useful are the 10 minute meditations in later Chapters. I use the Breathing meditation often c/o iPad when I want to meditate but not for ages. It is something you can return to regularly since DP's voice has a pleasant, positive and encouraging tone. At other times I like to meditate for longer in silence or to a bit of ambient Eno or with the sounds of the sea etc., but I like this guilt-free, practical approach to breathing meditation. It's a reminder to just meditate in the time available as a part of everyday life, not to strive for self-improvement, just to be more mindful of the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory text.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2019
i'm a counselling psychologist, and I have also been a meditator for nearly four decades. I recommend this book to many of my clients as a brilliant introduction to mindfulness and meditation. In fact, I've recommended it so often that Dr. Pennyman ought to be giving me commission—this is the book I wish I'd written myself.
Mindfulness and meditation give us the opportunity to take a step-back from our confused and chaotic emotions, to clear the head of its incessant monkey-chatter, and emerge with a degree of serenity and, in time, insight. Some of the benefits are immediate, others take a little longer, but, in general, it's a cheap and cheerful way of achieving eudaemonia.

It's worth noting that all the one-star reviews are for the Kindle edition and not the printed text; apparently it cannot be read on Kindle.
