Perfect Purchase For Me (Line Updates and Tips!)
Hey there! This review is coming from an amateur hobby artist that prefers digital art and wanted to find the best tool possible within a reasonable price range. I'm not rich or anything but this is a hobby I care about so I spent maybe 5 months trying to find the ideal tablet that would take care of everything I needed it to without costing an arm and a leg. This was the tablet I settled on, and I've been extremely happy with my purchase, and I'm going to cover the concerns I had from reading previous reviews and how those worked out in practice. To start, I'm sure everyones biggest concern when debating on purchasing this is the "line wobble" pointed out by many other people. I'm happy to say that although this problem isn't solved completely, it isn't really a concern anymore! Huion has created a firmware update that once applied dramatically reduces the line wobble. It should be noted that this issue only really affected your drawing when you drew slow, diagonal lines, so for many people who do not draw this way they may not notice it. I have included before and after pictures(firmware update) to ease the concerns of anyone debating on this purchase but thinking that it might not function well enough for what they want.To receive this firmware update, you must email the huion support team at service@huiontablet.com. It includes directions on how to apply it, but a tip from me is that if the device does not show "connected" during the process, leave the usb/hdmi connected but disconnect and reconnect the USB-C port from the tablet and it will work! Now for my experience with the device... Digital has always appealed to me more than traditional as a medium, but for a few years all I've had was an old Wacom Bamboo. I never got over the disconnect between drawing on a surface and looking at different one, this feeling acted as a barrier to my motivation. I felt at home immediately upon switching to this device after it was set up and working. Even though I'm still only beginning to learn digital processes for art, I was able to crank out a painting the very first day I got it which i will include here! The screen is pretty, and I haven't yet needed to calibrate either the screen settings or the touch settings(which i hear there may be issues with unfortunately). The pressure and tilt work perfectly, and it was a significant step higher from anything that I had used. The device feels quality and the buttons/slider feel good to the touch! I feel that I will be able to grow and develop as a digital artist without feeling like there are any annoying hardware handicaps to fight through.Part of my reason for choosing this device was the smaller size and weight. It is very easy to hold and move, feels very good to hold up in my bed or to set on my lap in the chair. It isn't truly portable in that it will always require a computer and a wall outlet, but paired with my macbook they both fit easily in a bag and thats as good as portability will get for a device of this quality in my opinion. Some issues I had with it:On mac, the "Adjust Brush Size" setting of the slider did not function within photoshop. After some testing, I discovered that this functionality seems to break when you change the button bindings within the driver software. I fixed this by exporting my settings and reinstalling the driver, and importing my settings again. Testing with this it seems to work fine, however I was slightly annoyed support didn't help me with this and I had to troubleshoot it myself. There may be other obscure bugs like this that I haven't ran into yet, but here is my solution to this in case anyone needs it, I couldn't find one anywhere. In the case of other obscure bugs, I cannot promise that support will help or that you will find the answer easily online. There is some heat in the top of the screen. It gets warm, but I do not feel at all that this could impact the user or the device negatively, you typically do not have your hand at the top middle of the screen when drawing. At the very edges of the top of the screen, the mouse moves away from where you have the pen when drawing. This also has not affected me negatively, I draw in the middle mostly. I wouldn't have noticed it if other people hadn't pointed it out in other reviews, it wont affect your ability to draw with it.The stand that comes with it is pretty much garbage. It offers 7 height options but will only truly support the device at around 4 of those including just laying it flat. The lip of the stand that supports the bottom of the device needs to be longer after a certain inclination, currently it will just slide off. I can't really use it so now i'm just storing it. The pen stand is wonderful and sturdy, though, and includes 10 spare pen nibs which is very generous considering how long they can last. The stand quality hasn't impacted me much beyond disappointment, as I'd rather just hold the device anyway. So final thoughts after a week of owning this, I really love it. I feel if you are a fledgling artist looking to finally invest in good digital hardware, this is the ideal choice. If you are a seasoned digital artist, there may be larger options and more expensive options, but at this size and price you won't be upset with it as a more portable spare. I'm hoping this review eases the minds of anyone that was in my position and wondering if the kamvas pro 13 is the correct choice! I feel I'll be happily drawing on this for a few more years at least, and have really come to respect Huion as a company for offering such quality at this price for those of us who can't dump ~$2000 on a graphics monitor from Wacom.Rated material as high because it feels professional and nice. Rated durability as 4 because although I don't think it would break/scratch from use or maybe somewhat rough handling, I certainly wouldn't want to drop it from any height(like any screen device really). Ease of install rated 2 because of the need to contact support for necessary firmware updates (had to wait 12 hours for response) and issues with driver detailed above.
    Thank you for your feedback

For those new to art and/or have never used a pen display tablet before-- or if you plan on gifting this to an artist you know, please keep this in mind:

    1. This tablet REQUIRES A COMPUTER to work. It is essentially a monitor that has pen capabilities, but without a computer or laptop to connect to, the tablet will NOT work.

    2. If you already have a computer, YOU NEED AN ART PROGRAM in order to draw with this tablet. This tablet does not come with any built-in software or bonus software to install. There are several free art programs you can download online like Krita, FireAlpaca, etc.

    3. If you have used an iPad or Android tablet to draw, the drawing experience will feel different on this display tablet in comparison. The screens used for pen displays are often treated with matte coatings to protect it and prevent glare. This is common with most pen displays, including Wacom's. Because of this, the screen will not look as crisp compared to an iPad or Android tablet. It is not a bad screen at all, the longer you draw on it the less you'll notice it.

    4. You can calibrate the pen pressure! This allows the tablet to adjust to how light or heavy you draw and create a more pleasant drawing experience. You can access the calibration settings in the driver settings under Pen Display > Working Area > Monitor Calibration. Some art programs also have an option to calibrate your pen pressure in their settings as well.

    SET-UP FOR LEFTIES:

I was kinda nervous since most pen displays are right-handed by default, even the express keys are placed to the left-hand side for that purpose. But after going through the settings, it was easy to flip the tablet around for my left hand.

In the Huion driver software under Work Area, select the monitor(s) you want your tablet to work on, then select 180 degrees. This flips the pen controls around, but not the screen.

To flip the screen, in Window's Display Settings, select the pen display and set the orientation to "Landscaped Flipped." This flips the enitre screen.

Now you can use the tablet with your left hand and keep the express keys on the right! :)

    Notes:

    - Even after flipping the screen for left-handed use, the tablet's built-in settings (press and hold the power button for 3 seconds) will still display in the right-hand orientation, so basically upside down.

    - The express keys don't need to be "flipped" when setting them up, you can set them up normally from top to bottom.

    - If you are getting "No Signal" when turning on the tablet while using the 3-in-2 cable, try flipping the USB-C cable and plug it in the other way. Once I did that, the tablet connected instantly. It seems the cables are meant to follow the right-handed orientation, which is unfortunate.

    Overall Thoughts:

I've been drawing on an iPad for years and still love it, but I wanted an additional art tablet to work with my PC and other programs that aren't available in iOS. Setting up the drivers and the tablet itself was relatively fine (after I fixed the No Signal issue). I appreciate how thin and light the display is, it doesn't take up much space and I can easily move it around if I need to. The pen itself is very responsive and feels solid in my hand, and the color accuracy is pretty good! I didn't have to do much color alibration in the settings; there's an option to set it to AdobeRGB, which matches closely to my IPS monitor and iPad when comparing the same image. For the cost I think it's reasonable, especially compared to how much a Cintiq Pro costs for the same size.

    What’s In The Box:
    Tablet
    Cord (3-in-1: Power, USB,HDMI)
    Pen
    Pen Holder with extra nibs
    Stand
    Screen Cloth
    Glove

    Set Up:
Set up was easy. I already own a Huion Kamvas GT-191 and GT Inspiroy H640P, so I didn’t have any issues. Make sure you follow Huion’s advice and uninstall any other drivers (Huion or other) before installing the drivers for this tablet.

    Color:
Color is great. My Huion Kamvas GT-191 came out of the box a little blue and not very bright. I had to adjust it with a monitor color calibrator. Not this one. Right out of the box it was bright and the colors were comparable to my color-corrected HP monitor.

    Size:
I think this size is perfect for crispness of images at 1920x1080. My Huion Kamvas GT-191 is a little less sharp than this, but that’s because it’s 19” at 1920x1080. It’s also a good size for drawing. I’ve tested it on Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Animate, and Clip Studio paint. There’s plenty of real estate for each of those programs. It’s also very thin and light, which makes it easy to move around on my desk and get it out of the way when I’m done using it. I’ve also brought it down into my lap when I lean back to draw - not good posture, but the tablet is so light, it works well drawing that way.

    Pen/Drawing Experience:
The pen is great because it’s battery-free. The pen for my Kamvas GT-191 needs to be plugged in every once in a while, so I had to have a spare pen charged so I didn’t have to stop drawing when the battery ran out. That doesn’t happen with this one. Every time you want to use it, it’s ready and it never runs out.

The drawing is excellent on the screen. There is no parallax and no line jitter. I tested a slow line at an angle without a ruler and there was very little jitter. That was due to little movements in my hand, because when I then tested it using a ruler, there was no jitter at all. The pen pressure is also great. There’s no line blowout not matter how hard you press the pen and it keeps steady pressure for any type of line you draw. I also like the texture of the screen. It has a little bit of tooth, kind of like you’re drawing on paper. It’s not exactly like paper, but it’s better than glossy screens where your pen just glides over the surface.

    Express Keys:
There are six plus a touch slider in the middle. I programmed all of them to work with each of the drawing programs I use. They worked well and are a huge time-saver. I prefer the express keys over using my keyboard. You do have to change them for every drawing program you use, which is unfortunate. That would be one thing I’d like to see Huion change about this and future tables with express keys - it’s a matter of updating their driver software, so it should be doable. I have a workaround for this, which is to make all of the keyboard shortcuts the same across all drawing programs - it’s a little bit of extra work, but the drawing programs will keep your changes so you only need to do it once.

    Programs I’ve Used This With:
Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Animate CC, Clip Studio Paint, Blender 2.8, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Premiere Pro. It worked well with all of them. I’m using a Mac Mini 2012 i5 with 16gb of ram, so if it works on my old computer (with no lag or other issues), it should work on most others.

    The Stand:
It’s light and has quite a few angles. I sometimes like to draw at almost a 90 degree angle, but this stand doesn’t do that. The tablet also doesn’t have any way to hook it up to a VESA arm. That’s the one thing I like better about my Kamvas GT-191 - it’s on an arm and I can tilt it into any position I want to draw in. That said, the angles it offers are good enough and don’t cause any issues with my wrist or back/neck while drawing.

    Final Thoughts:
This is a great tablet. It’s light, somewhat portable, draws well, the screen looks great, and works with all of the programs I use to draw/animate. The only things I wish it had are Vesa-mounting capabilities and the ability to have multiple drawing programs mapped to the express keys (so you don’t have to change them for every program). I should also say that I think the price is very reasonable for everything you get. This tablet is well worth it for anyone who wants to draw/animate digitally.

    UPDATE:
It's been a couple week since I reviewed this and I still love it. I've replace my GT-191 with this one even though it's smaller because I like having the express keys on the tablet and the images are more crisp. I've also attached it to a monitor arm (which was a minor negative in my initial review). There aren't any screw holes to mount it, but the tablet is so light that I was able to use velcro to attach it (see images).

    Preface
I already own a Cintiq 27QHD from 2016. The Cintiq has started to show a weird discoloration where It's slightly magenta on the left edge and transitions to normal as it gets to about 3/10th of the screen. Since the left side is kind of messed up, I only use the right side to draw on and have reference or videos on the left.

Review of the Kamvas 16 (2.5k)
1.) Value: This tablet was $639 +tax on sale. This is an incredible tablet at this price. You get a QHD laminated display, shortcut buttons, a stand, and all the cables you need.

    Unboxing:
I was really impressed with the packaging itself. The box was realy thick, and tightly closed but slid off easily when you pulled it off which felt very satisfying. They thoughtfully placed foam on the underside of the box cover to protect the monitor screen. The pen, pen holder, cables, paperwork, and stand had their own spots within the packaging. The unboxing process was very impressive.

    Screen/Display:
As soon as I unwrapped the monitor, I noticed that the antiglare wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I could still easily make out the spotlights from the ceiling being reflected onto the screen. It blurred out the lights a tiny bit but when I compare it to my old cintiq, it's not as diffused as it is on the cintiq. There is a thin but weird magenta discoloration all around the monitor. When I am viewing my desktop I can notice it, but when I am using Photoshop it's not as noticeable because it goes over the border of the app. There is also a very noticeable rainbow grain which gets more noticeable when viewing white or light colours. This becomes less noticeable as you get further away from it, or get used to it. The rainbow grain is also on the cintiq QHD but it's so faint. I read this is due to the etched glass which gives it a paper like texture. I wouldn't say it feels like paper.. it felt like it had less texture than the cintiq which is not etched at all. I also found the display to be dim, even at the highest brightness. On the bright side, I found the display very crisp, and the colours are more saturated than the cintiq's. The lamination is a big plus here. The cintiq has huge parallax. There is no noticeable gap between where I tap the huion screen and where the marks are being made. This made the drawing experience feel very natural whereas on the Cintiq, sometimes when I draw, the marks appear slightly off from the nib. Great screen and size overall!

    Pen:
I didn't enjoy the pen experience as much as the Cintiq's. I found the Huion pen too light. It is significantly lighter than my Cintiq's pen and I thought the Cintiq pen was already light. That very easy to get used to though. The tablet came with a grey felt nibs and the black plastic nibs. The felt nib had slightly more resistance than the black nibs but still less than the Cintiq's. I hold the pen higher up so there's more of an angle when I am drawing and noticed that sometimes, the curser will not be aligned with the nib of the pen. I think that issue was rectified in the newer Huion pens. It might have just been my pen but it made a screechy sound sometimes when I drew. Felt like something inside the pen itself wasn't holding the nib tight enough that it would shift slightly and then screech as I drew. It became less noticeable the more I used it. I also tried using different nibs to make sure that wasn't the issue. It happened with all the nib that came with the pen. I haven't seen or read of this issue online so it could have just been the one I bought. I also had trouble getting used to the pressure sensitivity. The pressure curve was not as consistent as I am used to on the Cintiq. I read the newer Huion pen has fixed this. If you never used a cintiq pen or apple pencil before, then this pen will feel fantastic.

    Stand:
The stand was the least impressive thing for me. I have a Parblo P100 stand so I used that instead. It is nice that the display came with a stand though.

    Connection:
The unit came with all the cables that you needed. I think it had 4 or 5 different cables. When I was using it with my MacBook pro, it powered and displayed data with just a single USB-C cable. When plugged into the display, the cables fit very snugly which is reassuring.

    Overall:
This is an amazing tablet for the price but I am returning it. If it wasn't for the pen experience and noticeable rainbow grain, I would most likely keep it. I will just wait for the Kamvas Pro 19 because I read the rainbow grain is a lot less noticeable, a lot brighter, and the pen/cursor shift doesn't happen anymore.

If none of the things I listed bother you, then you will love this tablet. I would give this a 4.5/5 because the price is so good for everything you get.

Initially I wanted to buy an iPad Pro 12.9 and I'm glad I didn't. I only draw at home and portability is not an issue. This is my first pen display so I cannot compare it with others. Beautiful colours and because it's 4k theres no pixelation. Everything looks so crisp, its like drawing on paper. I only use Clip studio paint and Photo shop and I didn't experience any lag or parallax. Nothing negative to say. I'm only used to traditional drawing and it takes a while to get adjusted to digital as you can tell from the pic. I'm 100% satisfied with the purchase.
