Intermixability

All Designers Gouache colours are fully intermixable. Designers Gouache, Professional Water Colour, and Cotman Water Colour can also be fully intermixed.

Pigments

The opacity of Designers Gouache is due to the exceptionally high levels of pigmentation in the formulation, which results in both covering power and clean colour mixing. The natural attribute of each pigment adds to the level of opacity and contributes to covering power.

Matt Finish

As a result of the high level of pigmentation and the Gum Arabic binder Designers Gouache dries to a matt finish. This reduces reflection when photographing gouache art work.

Its ease of use, brilliance, quick drying and matt finish make it the most popular designers' and illustrators' colour. The opaque matt finish makes for more accurate reproduction at artwork stage as it minimizes reflections.

Fine Artists

Use it in conjunction with water colour or on its own as opaque water colour. Its brilliance and opacity give it solidity, excellent for abstract work and extra details. Strong effects also result from the contrast of working on coloured backgrounds which are left partly exposed.

The 10 tube Introductory set was in excellent condition. Price of $25.95 was a real steal for this high quality, artist grade gouache. DId NOT have any issues with the tubes. Paint appears quite fresh. As noted by some other reviewers the red tubes did appear to be slightly runny when first opened. That happens sometimes with tube paint but it isn't fatal. None of the tubes spurted paint out. None of the tubes were dried up. The paint was fresh, mixed cleanly and painted beautifully. Delighted!

Update: Some people complained that the W&N Designers Gouache did not re-wet well. So I tested it. Left the gouache in a porcelain mixing palette for 5 days to test the re-wetability of this gouache. Took an eye dropper and dropped clean distilled water on the dried gouache. Came back about 5-10 minutes later and had no trouble stirring the paint and painting with it! Colors still look super pigmented and really pop! More than delighted now!

Some do say that putting 4 drops of glycerin per half pan mixed with the gouache will help it re-wet more easily. I haven't tried that, yet.

So far I feel this is a great set of gouache. It’s the first set I have purchased that was moderately priced. I’m still learning to mix color and I’m hoping this set will be enough for decent color mixing. I will buy individual tubes as I need them. I swatched the colors and they all cover nicely with the exception of the colors that are normally not fully opaque.
