Excessive heat during data transfer caused my UltraFit to fall apart!

Excessive heat during data transfer caused my UltraFit to fall apart!
*** Update - 3/5 Stars - 04 JAN 17 ***I called SanDisk on 15 DEC 16 to organise a RMA and was instructed to send the faulty UltraFit to my nearest SanDisk head office (Sydney, Australia) at my own cost. Once they received the faulty unit I was given a tracking number for the replacement. To my surprise the replacement UltraFit was being sent to me via international expedited mail from the US (I live in Australia).I am very impressed with SanDisk's global warranty and to their credit, the entire warranty process has been easy and straight forward. The replacement UltraFit arrived today (04 JAN 17) and within a matter of minutes of using it, I noticed the same heat issues which plagued my previous unit. I share the same concerns I had in my original review but will give this new UltraFit the benefit of the doubt for now.*** Original Review - 1/5 Stars - 27 SEP 16***I purchased a 128 GB Sandisk UltraFit in August 2015 and have used the drive fairly regularly since then. I would probably classify my usage as ‘average’ with most of my data transfers taking between 5 - 15 minutes to complete. The UltraFit does get very hot during normal usage (even during short 2 - 3 minute transfers) like a lot of other reviewers have mentioned but I didn't encounter any issues until I used it to backup a large quantity of data from my PC in preparation of a format > reinstall. On this occasion, I was transferring large amounts of data between two computers (copy files from PC A > paste files to PC B > clear UltraFit and back to PC A to copy files again > etc). After about an hour or so, I went to pull the UltraFit out of my USB port and to my surprise/horror the black plastic top (where you attach your lanyard to) separated from the metal portion. The metal portion was still stuck in my PC and the plastic top was in my hand!I tried to pull the metal portion out of my PC but it was too hot to touch. After letting it cool for a couple of minutes, I managed to remove the metal portion and reassemble the UltraFit together long enough to get my data off it. I can only guess that the heat generated during the transfer caused the plastic/metal parts to expand/deform enough to 'pop' out of the hinges holding the UltraFit together - you can see a metal hinge and a plastic hinge in the attached photo (there isn’t any glue/adhesive holding it together). Before buying the UltraFit, I had read through the comments section and noticed the warnings relating to the heat produced by the device. I took a gamble and purchased it anyway as it was at the right price point for speed and capacity on offer. I thought the heat issues would be manageable, but I guess Lady Luck wanted to prove otherwise >.<;I have owned a number of SanDisk drives over the past couple of years and they have been nothing but reliable. In this case, I am very disappointed with the build quality of the UltraFit and guess that I have no one to blame but myself for ignoring the warnings by previous reviewers.I would not recommend this drive to anyone, especially if you are planning on using it for any prolonged period of time. The heat generated by the UltraFit will likely shorten the lifespan of the device and even cause it to literally fall apart!

I bought a 16GB version of this drive 2 years ago for more than I bought the 64GB version a week ago. The 16GB version, I milled down and glued inside a custom built LEGO Captain Jack Sparrow figurine. Worked and looked splendid. This 64GB I plugged into the back of my Wii U. It works great too.
Nintendo discourages the use of flash drives as expansions to the Wii U's memory. They recommend getting a hard drive, but point out that you must power your hard drive separately, as the USB 2.0 port on the Wii U will not consistently provide enough power to spin the hard drive. Firstly, I don't like mechanical hard drives. They are relatively fragile and bulky. And they draw much more power and give off much more heat than any other modern type of storage device. And they are the slowest of the modern storage banks. Plus, I do not want another box and two more cables (one connection, one power) cluttering up my entertainment center. I considered getting a 156GB Samsung Solid State Drive (SSD), but at about $130, they are still a little too pricey for me to be enthusiastic about. They are incredibly fast and very efficient, drawing little power and giving off little heat. And with no moving parts, they are much harder to damage. And they are about the size of 3 stacked credit cards. But getting a SSD, besides being expensive, would also add one connection/power cable, which I still don't really care for, even if my vanity would have allowed me to show off a SSD in my entertainment center. I then learned that flash drives are now made in sizes up to 128GB, and they are very nearly the same thing. So I began the hunt for a flash drive.
In reading reviews on some of the cheapest drives, both here on Amazon and on other forums, I learned that not all flash drives work with the Wii U. Flash drive salesmen tell you the capacity of the drive, but rarely the speed of the drive. It became apparent that some cheap drives would not work, that games saved to said flash drives would stutter and occasionally crash, and that all saved progress in a game could be lost. So I was very careful to not be too cheap when I bought this drive. Hearing of a success story with a SanDisk flash drive, I decided to buy one myself.
The SanDisk Ultra Fit is perfect. It is USB 3.0 (not to be confused with the 2.0 Cruzer Fit) The Wii U only has USB 2.0 ports, so right off the bat, this flash drive is designed to run faster than the Wii U is meant to receive data from any external memory bank. It is tiny, barely sticking out of the back of my Wii U, and completely unnoticeable to anyone not looking for it.. It is also small enough that I do not have to worry about it being bumped and bent or broken if I decide to move the system, like to take it on vacation. It draws almost no power, and barely heats up. And though it is only 64GB, I can fit two side by side and quadruple the Wii U's internal memory.
I got mine on sale for $27, but even at full price, $33, this is a no brainer. If you want a quality flash drive, with great speed and capacity, and like the small, almost-non-existent-when-inserted profile, this is a perfect flash drive for you. And if you are looking to expand your Wii U's memory, get it! Get two if you need more space. Unless you download every game, I doubt you will need more space, and even then you will have to buy a heck of a lot of games. I transferred files for "The Art of Balance" and "Bayonetta 2" over to the flash drive, and they still played flawlessly. I do not expect that to change, and could only be happier if SanDisk made a 128GB version of this tiny beast of a flash drive.

Summary: I'm very happy with this drive. The cost per unit storage is fantastic, the size is just right, and the speed is good. The plug-and-forget capability makes it a viable way to extend the storage of a laptop.
Details: Neither of my initial concerns have proven warranted. I was concerned about the complaints of heat. While it is noticeably warm, it's not hot by any reasonable standard. I was also concerned that it might protrude from my laptop enough to snag and cause problems. Also not a problem.
As the first USB 3.0 flash drive I've owned, I expected to be pleased by the improvement in performance. While the drive is slower than some other USB 3.0 flash drives, it is still quite fast. I haven't been able to replicate outside of benchmarks the 30 to 40 MB/s write speeds that some have observed, but I have seen average writes of between 20 and 25 MB/s. This was done using the Linux pv command to track the transfer rate of 3 very large files (18GB, 19GB and 8GB) to the drive. Attempting the same transfer with a Sandisk Cruzer 64GB USB 2.0 flash drive resulted in rates of 3.5 MB/s to 4.5 MB/s. So, while I cannot verify the claim of 10x the transfer speed of USB 2.0 devices, I do find the speed satisfactory. It would certainly fall short for anyone that wants to, for example, run a VM from the drive, but most day-to-day bulk storage write needs will be readily met by the drive.
Similarly, read speeds on the drive are quite satisfactory. Reading the 3 very large files from the drive to /dev/null through pv showed a transfer rate of just over 100 MB/s. While this again falls short of manufacturer (idealized, no doubt) claims, I am not at all disappointed.
CrystalDiskMark on Windows gave results somewhat higher than those I achieved in practical usage. I include them as another measure, although I obviously find the practical measures more useful.

I love this drive. This thing is small and powerful. I purchased the drive for this reason and for its intended use of a permanent external drive on my laptop. Its size and minimal protrusion means i don't worry about it breaking off like other much longer USB drives. I have also attached to a lanyard and put it on a keychain. Ergonomically, I like the curvy designed edge.
As a mainly static storage space for misc documents, performance was not high on my needs however, I was happily surprised at its performance. This is actually very fast. Particularly in comparison to lesser USB 2.0 drives. Keep in mind that you must have the drive plugged into a USB 3.0 port to get the full performance effect. I wont bore you with performance specs as there are plenty of places you can find that done in a controlled environment. I can offer that I've had this drive for over a year without a single issue.

Pros: Price point and ample space.
Can permanently reside on your laptop without risk of physical damage as its almost flush with the port.
Small form factor makes it easy to keep on a key chain as well.
Reliable.

Cons: It generates a lot of heat and hot to touch after a few minutes of use. Expected as you can clearly see theres no where for the heat to go.

Overall: Great little drive, with lots of space and performance to match. Sandisk name means reliability and mine is proof. For this reason I can recommend this product.

Reviewed in Canada on October 17, 2021
I've been using this for several years to store my files and images on my laptop. The device is incredibly small and stores so much data! I written and re-written the USB hundreds of times without any issues. the small string hole allows connecting the device to string or key loop to make it easier to remove and carry on me.
I highly recommend this product! careful not to lose it since it's sooo small! I will definitely be buying the SanDIsk brand again for my storage needs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottima chiavetta usb.
Reviewed in Italy on August 18, 2017
