Had a P900 for 7 years and a P520 before that. The P950 has some key great features over the P900, raw mode, hot shoe, 4K video. The optics and picture quality are just as good. Took it up to Vermont for the solar eclipse in April, my photos were as good as anything other amateurs posted on the net. Its still compact enough to easily carry it in hand or on a neck strap. The 24-2000mm equivalent zoom eliminates the need to carry around a camera back with 2-3 extra lenses.

In daylight not pointed to the sun, this camera can really see things far away. You can use the HDMI to look at things far away on a monitor, though the HDMI output as far as I can tell is not the highest quality.
The stills are like looking through a large binocular, but much easier to hold. There really is not much wuth this long of a telephoto available.
If you want a super telephoto this is the one to get. Forget the Sony and Panasonic cameras for long range zoom, they can't match this Nikon

I really wanted to love this camera - it has a GREAT zoom - and sure, in auto mode, if you're not shooting anything special, the pics are fine! I wanted something to take photos of bees, specifically in flight, and I even bought the Photographer's Guide to the Nikon Coolpix P950: Getting the Most from Nikon's Superzoom Digital Camera : and have studied it this entire weekend. If I'm in the house taking photos of the fan with a mug in the background, following the advice, the photos are very good - but the minute I"m outside trying to take photos of the bees, no matter whether in A, S, P, M, U, auto or scene, there's nothing outstanding about the pics. It's certainly not better than my older Fujifilm Finepix S1 with it's 50x zoom and weatherproof body. Maybe it's just me! Maybe other people out there are taking great clear shots of bees flying in and out of their hives, but if so, I don't know how they're doing it. I have the highest shutter speed, and am trying all the camera's options... small aperture, larger apperture, high iso, low iso, light compensation, i'm trying EVERYTHING that the book explains... but nothing spectacular has appeared. I thought this would knock the socks off my Finepix S1, as that's from 2014, but I'm amazed at how some of those photos are STILL better than this one. The zoom is amazing, no doubt about it, and some great features on this camera - but unless I can get outstanding bee photos in flight, it's not for me. But it IS an excellent camera - dont be put off by my review - I wanted something very specific - and this just doesn't meet my expectations. However, for the price, you can't beat the zoom and all the incredible options it has. What particularly disappointed me was the macro and close up options. I'm right on top of the flowers, camera is literally 1 cm away from the bee and the flower, and the photos are not good. So I give up

I've had the Nikon P600 for almost 10 years and it was time to upgrade. P950 is the most recent Coolpix (as of 2020) and it's the best you can have in a system where you don't need to change lenses. 1) Zoom: you can easily resolve craters on the moon or fill the frame with someone's face clearly from 100 yds away. 2) With the same lens you can do wide angle and closeup macro. 3) The monitor can be fully articulated so that you can see it held over your head or reaching to the ground, or do selfies. 4) The body is wonderfully ergonomic so that you can hold it in one hand at your side without dropping it.
*** My style of photography is journalistic and I couldn't ask for a more versatile device. The only drawback is that it's not waterproof. At 2 lbs it is relatively heavy but worth it not to need to change lenses. Finally it's not a 'just auto' point-and-shoot as it has all the manual settings a pro would want.

I am a retired Commercial Photographer In the field I used 4" x 5" view cameras all the way down to 35mm film cameras. The digital age and my age coincided and I retired. Since then I have been using Nikon DSLRs D800e to be exact as well as the crop sensor Z50 my first fora into mirrorless. I Had seen the P900 and the P1000 and read the specks. I had no hesitation regarding the size of their 1/2.3" sensor, knowing that the images it produced far exceed anything I could get with film on my F4s of old. I did like the fact the P1000 had raw capabilities (Photo Shop had long replaced the darkroom of old after I'd retired) but the thing was just too big.
Then along came the P950 a souped up version of the P900. It had raw it had 4K and the only thing it lacked was the plus size of the P1000 and an extra 1000mm. The camera came in at just about the size of the D800 with a 24 -70mm f2.8 on it, but a couple of pounds or so less.
So as something to do as the flu hit. I perchesed one. I have been playing with it for a couple of days now and am getting to know it. There isn’t jack as far as instructions except for the menu. It took me a while of surfing the screen to find all of what I needed to operate the camera in the modes I have become accustom to using with my digital equipment.
I cranked out some images and dropped them into my 27” iMac. I was quite pleased with the lens and operating test I have so far tried. This instrument is touchy. You have to conform to it. It will then conform to you. If that makes any sense. In order to get tack sharp results. And this thing WILL produce tack sharp images at all millimeters, you have to use it in bright light and ISOs of 100 -400. Hand held is good up to about 600mm with the image stabilization on. After that I shut off the VR and put it on a tripod.
I am not concerned about shooting the moon as much as using it to get close to subjects 10’ to 100’ away from me. This is my “back to nature” camera. It also has a fine closeup capability. You use manual focus and the lower power wide and telephoto settings and you can get some great images. You also have the advantage of better depth of field do to the small sensor.
I am still messing with it but wanted to give my initial impressions. I like it so far. In this case I feel I’ve gotten far more than the price point would indicate. If the camera has perked your interest, get one. You can always return it if it’s not right for you.

Ive had several cameras in this series including the P900 and the p1000..I lam a birder and I love them for their zoom capacity and the crisp details you are able to capture..I don't like the fact that you can't get good flight shots and sometimes it takes a while to get your lens focused and the bird has moved but overall, I keep coming back to these cameras because of the zoom and quality of the image..I’m not as happy with the clarity of the P950 and would not buy this camera again..am wondering if something g is wrong with my camera or whether the clarity is just not as good with this model..I also find I miss a lot of shots while this camera is trying to focus..Would like to know if there is a warranty with this camera..

I am a wildlife photographer and am using Nikon gears from past 6 years. I have Nikon D500 and also had Nikon Coolpix P900. I sold my P900 and bought Nikon Coolpix P950.

Nikon Coolpix P950 has borrowed lot of things from P1000. Like 4K video in 30fps, 1080p in 60fps, And supports Raw format in Images. The EVF is better than P900 and also the Zoom buttom has been smoother compaired to P900. The auto focus si also better when compaire to P900 and the tracking system is lot more better this time.

The 4K video quality is awesome. You can view the sample video in my youtube channel " Jakati's Photography Travel & Wildlife.

The picture quality is also awesome , even though it has a smaller sensor with 16MP the images are good and sharp. The insane 2000mm zoom is sufficent to view moon's creaters. The camera is very light in weight compare to P1000 and also very handy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boa câmera.
