My biggest complaint with this is the finder scope. Yes you can set it up to be able to focus easily but it’s just a piece of plastic with a couple lenses in it. Held with 3 screws and 2 mounting nuts it’s not the most robust design and if you knock it in any way it’s useless, not the best design if you’re trying to get somewhere for night gazing or even just going in and out of your house. So I’ve essentially just stopped using it and instead take the lenses out so I can see the mirror and move the scope until I’m where I want to look, then put the lenses back in and I’m up and going. A little more work but more accurate. Like others have said you can upgrade that as well so it’s not a deal breaker, for less than $200 this is a seriously good beginner or travel scope.

UPDATE:
I have collimated it and used it multiple times now and I am VERY impressed. I will say, the collimating means everything when using it. I recommend collimating at least every month (or after any bump the telescope takes). This will keep your views clear and your time more enjoyable.
We also bought the accessory kit like we were planning. I don’t see how you can use this scope without it. We were BLINDED trying to view the moon (quarter moon at the time I believe) and had to go filters that came with the kit. The eyepieces that came with it are higher quality and much clearer than the included eyepieces.
I discovered that viewing at night with lights around you ruins the experience. Just having the kitchen light on in the house ruined our views from out in the yard. Make sure it’s as dark as possible. We also learned that your views aren’t anywhere near as good if your eyes aren’t adjusted to the dark. The first time I viewed Orion’s nebula I had just walked outside and viewed it. A few nights later I set up again and waited about 20 minutes outside before viewing and WOW!!!! The difference was incredible. It went from a slightly white cloud to a BEAUTIFUL image with colors and significant detail.
We also got to view the andromeda galaxy and that was pretty amazing as well. Tonight’s target is the moon, Orion’s nebula, and the 7 sisters. If you know how to use it, you will enjoy it greatly. I plan on upgrading telescopes eventually because of my experience with this one.
These are the items we have bought for or upgraded on the telescope:
Binoculars. Got a really good pair at Sams Club. We can see nebulas with them as well. They’re great for finding sky targets.
Accessory kit. Get it. Worth every penny.
A new finder scope. We got the laser dot one on amazon for about $20. Totally worth it. The one that came with it is pretty much useless.
Sky maps. These help in finding what you want to see.
Red flash lights. These are a must have since they will not affect your night vision. I got 6 of them for $9 on amazon.
Some star apps for iPhone. Download Celestrons app. It will help a lot. I also recommend SkyView. Not as good as SkyPortal by Celestron but still good.
I also feel like I should mention that the free software package you get for your PC is AWESOME. I really recommend using it.
EDIT: I uploaded some pictures I took with my DSLR camera. They are a little blurry because I didn’t have a remote shutter. The camera moved some when I pressed the button. Hoping to snap a shot of Orion soon once I get a remote shutter.

First of all, I made the mistake of ordering an "in the box" telescope (advertised as "Used - Like New") for a nice discount. Shouldn't have done that! It was obviously a return. It came with missing and damaged parts that had just been thrown in the box with no padding by whoever returned it. As usual, though, Amazon accepted the return with no problem. So I then ordered a new telescope at the regular price and everything arrived well-packed and with all parts present.
I like the scope and consider it to be a great value for the money, but there are some definite cons. So let's get those out of the way first:
1. Throw the finder scope away and get one of those red-dot finders. The finder scope that came with the scope is very poor quality and extremely difficult to align, particularly since it seems to want to slip around under the screws that hold it in place.
2. The eyepieces are okay if you're a beginner or casual observer, but they seem to be cheaply made. I already had some eyepieces from a previously-owned telescope and they were much better than the ones that came with this scope. I later ordered a Celestron 8-24 mm zoom eyepiece and like it very much.
3. The thumb-screws that hold the mount rigid so you can use the slow-motion cables don't seem to work very well. They loosen easily - no matter how much I tighten them - causing the telescope to suddenly move and taking whatever you're observing out of the field of view. I have to constantly tighten them and I wonder how long that's going to work before something strips or breaks.
Now for the pros:
1. As I've said, a lot of scope for the money - five-inch aperture, 1000mm focal length, f/8, with equatorial mount, tripod, two eyepieces and 3x Barlow. Not bad for less than $200.
2. With the exception of the finder scope and eyepieces, everything seems to be of decent quality.
3. I've read lots of reviews that mention how hard it is to collimate this telescope, so I ordered a Celestron collimating eyepiece in advance, thinking I would have to collimate it when it arrived. But I haven't had to use it yet. My scope came perfectly collimated right out of the box and I haven't had to correct the collimation yet!
4.I have been pleased with the light-gathering power of the scope. For the most part I've been observing the moon so far, and the image is nice and crisp and bright, especially with the lower powered eyepieces. See the pic with this review.
Conclusion: Once again, lots of scope for the price. But I would say you're going to want to get a better finder scope and better eyepieces - I recommend the 8-24mm zoom eyepiece (try it, you'll like it!). I also bought the motor drive as an add-on (less than $50 and makes observing and taking photos much easier and more enjoyable). You should also get a moon filter for better observing (and photographing) the moon.
Four out of five stars for me! Would have been five except for the cons listed above.
One final thought. I think this is considered a beginner's telescope for both adults and kids. Maybe so, but putting this together and getting familiar with the equatorial mount and how to align everything and just getting used to the telescope in general - including the possibility of needing to collimate periodically - is maybe a stretch for many kids or casual observers, at least without a little help. Before you buy this for a kid or a casual observer, understand that there's a lot more involved with this scope than, say, one of those cheap refractors that you just move up and down and back and forth on a simple mount and point and observe.

I began to assemble the telescope carefully unpacking as I went. Having got the refractor body mounted I discovered I was missing the finderscope..... what to do?? Dismantle and return it knowing it would probably be scrapped...???
There was a contact link on my order for missing parts, so I used it.
It takes you directly to Celestron in California.. so I contacted them explaining what had happened. A reply came the following day at 12.10am.
Brianna at Celestron CA was so helpful. They requested a photograph of the telescope minus the finderscope and a screenshot of the order.
The following morning (early hours) an email arrived confirming they would replace the missing finderscope free of change and contact Celestron UK to arrange a replacement to be sent.
An email followed from Michael T at Celestron UK confirming my delivery address and part requested. Followed by another confirming dispatch, delivery schedule and tracking information... I reported it missing on the 8th of Sept and it was delivered today the 11th of September..... what amazing customer service.. well done Celestron....... and it's a great telescope by the way!!
