Then along came the P950 a souped up version of the P900. It had raw it had 4K and the only thing it lacked was the plus size of the P1000 and an extra 1000mm. The camera came in at just about the size of the D800 with a 24 -70mm f2.8 on it, but a couple of pounds or so less.
So as something to do as the flu hit. I perchesed one. I have been playing with it for a couple of days now and am getting to know it. There isn’t jack as far as instructions except for the menu. It took me a while of surfing the screen to find all of what I needed to operate the camera in the modes I have become accustom to using with my digital equipment.
I cranked out some images and dropped them into my 27” iMac. I was quite pleased with the lens and operating test I have so far tried. This instrument is touchy. You have to conform to it. It will then conform to you. If that makes any sense. In order to get tack sharp results. And this thing WILL produce tack sharp images at all millimeters, you have to use it in bright light and ISOs of 100 -400. Hand held is good up to about 600mm with the image stabilization on. After that I shut off the VR and put it on a tripod.
I am not concerned about shooting the moon as much as using it to get close to subjects 10’ to 100’ away from me. This is my “back to nature” camera. It also has a fine closeup capability. You use manual focus and the lower power wide and telephoto settings and you can get some great images. You also have the advantage of better depth of field do to the small sensor.
I am still messing with it but wanted to give my initial impressions. I like it so far. In this case I feel I’ve gotten far more than the price point would indicate. If the camera has perked your interest, get one. You can always return it if it’s not right for you.

As for controls and features. I am very happy. They will feel vary familiar to any long time camera user.
update: Since buying this camera a month ago I have taken thousands of pictures. The cameras standard picture settings can do more harm than good. There are two options for maximizing image quality:
1. Shoot Raw and convert and process
2. Use JPEG, but in the settings use maximum size, turn down all adjustments to their minimum (noise reduction, sharpening, contrast, color, etc.)
If you shot Raw you have to convert and do more post processing. That can be a pain. I find the cameras JPEG conversation is pretty good, if you turn the settings down and adjust those in any photo processing software. If you don't turn the settings down the camera internal software generates a lot of minor pixalation artifacts in the image.
Also, when keep the ISO below 400 whenever possible and use a tripod a lot. I have a very compact, light weight tripod that I take with me all the time and use 90% of the time. Picture quality is significantly better than hand holding. At 2000mm even the slightest motions affect sharpness.
This camera has it limitations is low light, so be realistic in your expectation.
I hope you find this helpful.

I chose the P950 over the P1000 because it is more comfortable to shoot handheld and bring on short hikes or to the zoo. The image stabilization is great but I’d still recommend a tripod and a basic understanding of manual settings is recommended to really get the most out of this camera.

Nikon Coolpix P950 has borrowed lot of things from P1000. Like 4K video in 30fps, 1080p in 60fps, And supports Raw format in Images. The EVF is better than P900 and also the Zoom buttom has been smoother compaired to P900. The auto focus si also better when compaire to P900 and the tracking system is lot more better this time.
The 4K video quality is awesome. You can view the sample video in my youtube channel " Jakati's Photography Travel & Wildlife.
The picture quality is also awesome , even though it has a smaller sensor with 16MP the images are good and sharp. The insane 2000mm zoom is sufficent to view moon's creaters. The camera is very light in weight compare to P1000 and also very handy.
