Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters - they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.
A Full-Time Manual Focus Makes Fine Tuning Easy
BBAR lens reduces reflection All Tamron lenses have high auto focus precision and are designed to capture subjects easily and in almost any situation, yet sometimes a photographer wants to fine-tune and make adjustments on the fly. The integration of a full-time manual focus offers just that: instead of fumbling with switches, photographers can from auto-focus to manual-focus by simply adjusting the focus ring. This feature helps the lens produce impressive results even in telephoto situations where the depth of field is narrow.
Cleaner Crisper Images without Flare or Ghosting
The new BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) reduce the lens reflection and dispersion that cause ghosting and flare. The coating enhances light transmission in both the short and long wavelength ranges, ensuring excellent performance in all photographic conditions. Additionally, internal surface coatings are applied to cemented surfaces of all lens elements to deliver sharp, high-contrast images and flawless color re-production.
Vibration Compensation (VC) Mechanism-Making Telephoto & Low Light a New Medium
The actuator and algorithms, developed in-house at Tamron, provide the power that gives VC (Vibration Compensation) it's excellent tracking performance and smooth, stable viewfinder image. Tamron's VC mechanism provides a three-coil system, whereby the three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens groups electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction, helping to eliminate the blur from camera shakes for clean shots night or indoors, or in macro and telephoto situations, hand held has never been this easy.
VC on - VC off
Speed is Nothing if not Stable
Fast and accurate without so much as a whisper. The SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD is the first to boast Tamron's new Ultra Silent Drive (USD). USD is Tamron's latest autofocus motor technology rotor, converting, converting ultrasonic waves into torque to quietly deliver a new level of focus precision and speed. Because it's still built on a rotor it's full time manual focus is as easy as ever-allowing the photographer smooth manual focusing without having to fumble with a switch. With advanced motor technology and newly developed software, Tamron's USD delivers a practical, precise, noiseless photographic experience at turbo speed. For those dynamic sports shots, moving vehicles, or fast moving subjects, there has never been a better option.
Smooth manual focusing without having to fumble with a switch
Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) Lens
Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) lens elements made from specialized ultra-high-grade glass allow Tamron lens designers to achieve much greater control over chromatic aberration (color fringing) and magnification aberrations, the two major factors that inhibit image quality enhancement. In combination with LD elements, XLD elements are used to achieve sophisticated lenses that deliver the highest possible contrast, the finest detail, and superior imaging performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Full Frame Sensor for Ulitmate Versatility
The SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DI VC USD is one of Tamron's Digitally Integrated (Di) designs. The Di series is the mark of Tamron lenses that are format-versatile since they can be used on Digital APS-C, full-frame and 35mm SLR cameras.

Auto-focus/Manual-focus (AF/MF) Switch Mechanism on the Focus Ring
The ability to switch quickly between auto-focus (AF) and manual-focus (MF) is a great asset in many types of shooting, especially sports and nature photography. This is easily accomplished with Tamron’s ingenious AF/MF system. By simply sliding the focus ring back and forth between the two positions you can select either the AF or MF focusing position. In manual-focus mode Tamron lenses provide smooth, precise manual focusing by turning their wide, well-textured focusing rings.

Well made, and solidly built. The lens is what one would expect from Tamron, a quality instrument. I'm using it with a Nikon D5000 and this lens mated to the D5000 body is well balanced in the hand. It weighs more than the Nikon 55-200mm 52mm lens I've used for a long time, but the added weight helps with stability of the lens in the hand. The lens offers:
1. VC (Vibration Compensation)
2. USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) which is Tamron's first lens with their own ultrasonic drive for fast focusing.
3. An advanced optical design that features a LD (Low Dispersion) and an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from materials that prevent chromatic aberration.
This lens will do well on digital full frame as well as APS-C sensors. Be aware that if you use it on a APS-C (I.E. Nikon D5000, etc.) the angle of view changes from 70-300mm to 109-465mm on the APS-C. Actually I find that a plus for my particular shooting style and subject matter. I have also read that this lens will cross over to film cameras also, but not having a Nikon film camera I haven't utilized it in that configuration. Another feature I like is the 'on demand manual focus'. The manual focus ring is the ring closest to the camera body, at your fingertips. If you wish to move from auto focus to manual all that is required is to use the ring without engaging the AF switch to the 'OFF' position. This manual focus override is quite useful for those fast focus change situations. where moving from auto focus to manual and back again is needed. The speed of focus, etc. of this lens comes into it's own when shooting in continuous mode with a fast moving subject. Since the focusing is done internally, you don't have external barrel components moving while focusing. This helps a lot when using the flower shaped lens hood, not to mention a circular polarizer filter. Also there is zero affect on fixed value ND (Neutral Density) or VND (Variable Neutral Density) filters since the filters have uniform ND coatings. I haven't tried a graduated ND filter yet; but will report on the results when the filter(s) arrive.
Tamron has incorporated countermeasures to prevent 'ghosting' effects. BBAR (Broad-Band Anti Reflection) multilayer coatings reduce reflection into elements in the lens. This guarantees excellent performance in all photographic conditions. It also enhances light transmission on both long and short wavelengths. The lens also has internal coatings on the elements to provide sharper images and give better balance and color reproductions. This has been my 'technical' overview of the lens. So how does it function under 'generalized users' capabilities?
It did take a bit of a learning curve in comparison to my Nikon lens I got when I initially purchased the camera. That said, the learning curve was not a steep one but one based in logic and expanding my abilities when I used the Nikon lens. I'm not faulting the Nikon lens, but simply making a comparison between the classic Nikon lens and the newer technology of Tamron's 70-300mm lens. I have experimented with another Tamron lens which is an incredibly fast lens in every way. But I have yet to save the funds for that lens since the price point is quite a challenge to my budget. And when I do acquire the lens I will review it also. But if one is looking for a first time third party telephoto lens for one's camera, one would be hard pressed to find a better 'first time out' telephoto lens.
CONS: Well, I had to purchase a set of common filters (UV, CPL [Circular Polarizer], VND [Variable Neutral Density] in 62mm since all other filters I own are 53mm. Not much of a CON point actually. And I found basic 62 mm filters a a fair price.
PROS: All my Cokin type P series filters work flawlessly after I purchased the 62mm adapter ring. Money saved there. The lens is faster.
I shall provide some example photos as soon as I can with other pictures.
As another note, I use this lens on a Nikon D90. I have seen another comment on here about it not exposing correctly on the D90. I have not had any problems and exposure has been right on, with and without a speedlight sb700 flash at all apertures and focal ranges.

(UPDATE 11/30/2011)
After taking a bunch of indoor shots of my niece's gymnastics meet, I reduced my rating to 4 stars. Although I do love this lens, it is not so great wherever there is not direct light (i.e. sunlight) - it is extremely slow focusing sometimes and you must also adjust the shutter speed and/or ISO accordingly which will give some blur or grain for any indoor action shots. Although the slowness is not a defect of the camera, it is inherent within the wide-open end of the aperture range F/4-5.6 . The drop of the star is for the slow focusing in anything but pretty bright light. It is still IMHO one of the best zooms for the price that is out there. If you need a zoom for low-light to medium-light action shots, better save major $$$ and pick up a 70-200mm F 2.8 or whatever.
(Update 8/26/2012)
I had this lens out again today. I would say it qualifies for a 4 to a 4.5 . I love the optics and everything is great except the slow focusing. I mean it hunts sometimes even in shade when it is sunny out. No other Nikon 3.5-5.6 lens I have does this. I'm not talking dark here. If you read other reviews by googling: "tamron 70-300 VC slow focusing", you will see what I mean as others state it can be slow. I have taken excellent pictures of birds and wildlife with this lens. It is true though that unless you are shooting in bright to semi-bright conditions or using a strobe, you may wish to take a look at a f/2.8 fast lens. Just be forewarned it's possible you may miss a shot or two if you need to focus in overcast or darker conditions. Is it worth the price? Absolutely and I would buy it again and again!
(Update 4/30/2013)
I have been extensively shooting this lens at the zoo, on vacation, mostly wildlife and sports, mostly now on my D700 FX camera. Although it is true that the focus can hunt in darker conditions, this lens is superb for the cost. The VC is outstanding and I love how the image does "freeze" in the viewfinder. I paid $399 for this lens and it is worth every penny of that. This is probably my "best" lens although it may be one of the cheapest. I got my "bang for the buck" out of this baby. Lightweight and a lot of utility, especially on my FX D700. I am increasing the rating to 5 stars. This *should* be my final update.
Top reviews from other countries
I use it on a D7500 Nikon camera and the combination is nothing short of outstanding. The lens is very sharp when held properly. It is smooth in operation and handles comfortably and quickly. The vibration control is very exceptional, which does not negate proper steadiness on the part of the photographer. It allows for long shots that would not be achievable with a lesser lens. Again, steadiness on the photographer's part is always a major factor. Nevertheless, extreme picture sharpness can be achieved with handheld shots using this lens. Autofocus is very good.
Always know your camera well to make sure you use any features that can aid steadiness and picture quality.
Furthermore, sit and play with the lens camera combination to achieve the results of which both are capable.
Technical issues by technicians are not field trials. They are laboratory trials, and as such are not applicable in the real world except under extreme conditions, at which point all cameras have difficulties. This is a relatively sturdy, well built lens that will usually do what you want to do within it's range and design parameters. I have had a lot of cameras and lenses in my life and this and some obscure 28mm lenses that are so sharp you could cut yourself provide huge bang for the proverbial buck, almost as if they came out of nowhere just for your indulgence.
You won't be likely to get many bargains in this world the likes of this Tamron SP 70 - 300mm VC F4 - 5.6 USD zoom lens so if it's what you need, buy it after checking compatability. Tamron provides an online lens/camera compatability list. Great lens!

Hace un rato que lo he recibido y he hecho fotos de pruebas con mi NIkon D5300.
Las fotos que he hecho tienen una nitidez asombrosa. No he observado aberraciones cromáticas ni a 300 mm.
Producto altamente recomendable.
