Product Description

The Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035) is a highly portable,
ultra-telephoto zoom lens with AF precision for shooting instantaneous movement
with the utmost clarity. With this effectively positioned, extraordinary glass LD (Low
Dispersion) lens, aberrations typical with many telephoto lenses are a thing of the
past. Tamron’s proprietary eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency)
Coating suppresses reflections, yielding vivid images of amazing clarity. And thanks
to a lens barrel made primarily of magnesium, the A035 boasts the lightest weight
in its class*, making it ideal for handheld shooting over long periods of time. With
a MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 1.5m and a maximum image magnification
ratio of 1:3.6, the A035 lets you soften the foreground or background to dramatically
emphasize your subject at close range. Moisture-Resistant Construction and a fluorinecoated
front element provide additional protection when shooting outdoors.

Heavyweight performance in a lightweight lens

    Tamron 100-400

eBAND Coating delivers sharp, clear photos

The Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035) is a highly portable, ultra-telephoto zoom lens with AF precision for shooting in-the-moment action clearly and easily. 3 LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements are used and effectively positioned to take away aberrations that are known to occur with a telephoto lens. And Tamronʼs proprietary eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating prevents reflections, giving you clearer, more vivid images. With a lens barrel made primarily of magnesium at selected area, the Model A035 is the lightest zoom in the ultra-telephoto category*, making it ideal for handheld shooting over long periods of time. Plus, Moisture-Resistant construction and a Fluorine-Coating on the front element provide additional protection when shooting outdoors.

Excellent AF performance meets enhanced VC

    Tamron 100-400mm

Precise AF tracking and VC (Vibration Compensation) are essential for ultra-telephoto lens performance. Thatʼs where Tamronʼs Dual MPU high-speed control system comes in. It features an MPU (micro-processing unit) with a built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for superior signal processing, plus a separate MPU dedicated exclusively to vibration compensation. With enhanced AF response speed and VC, you can accurately shoot fast-moving subjects with stability and ease—even in low-light.

Precise, responsive AF performance A built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) on the MPU delivers highspeed processing of digital signals, while ensuring excellent AF responsiveness. This improvement allows you to track subjects moving at high speeds, even more accurately. The AF drive system also uses a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor for outstanding performance and fast, precise focusing.

Keep it steady with enhanced VC Weʼve fine-tuned our original VC (Vibration Compensation) system with an enhanced control algorithm and an independent MPU dedicated to VC. Together, they meet a CIPA image stabilization performance level of 4 stops. While most ultra-telephoto lenses are prone to camera shake, the Model A035 delivers excellent stability for reliable, stress-free handheld shooting.

    Best Value 100-400mm Lens!
This lens is simply a bargain! The performance you get for the price just can't be beat. I can compare this to a Canon EF 70-300 L lens, but unfortunately not the 100-400 L. Compared to the EF 70-300L, I would say AF speed is the same and sharpness probably goes to Tamron. 300mm just seems to fall short when you want to get that bird in the tree. 400mm fits the bill. First party AF is better, but Tamron is really getting better and better. What is fantastic about this lens is its range, it's sharpness, AF speed, build, and VC. I can track my son riding his scooter, especially in the panning VC mode very well. The focus limit switch is very neat. It focuses only in a certain range from where you last focused, so it doesn't go from minimum to infinity if it loses focus. I mico adjusted the AF to -1 on the wide and, and +6 on the telephoto end; not too bad for a third party lens at all! After that, I was able to get very sharp images. AF speed is extremely fast! As fast as you can push the shutter button, it locks on!This lens does not have the "SP" designation, but it's built exactly like my other SP lenses, with metal exterior and includes fluorine coating and weather sealing. It is a big lens, make no mistake, but does not have the attention-drawing white color like Canon L lenses. Overall, I am super happy with this lens, and would not even remotely consider paying more than double for the Canon version.I uploaded some pics for all to review, and a few 100mm and 400mm pairings so you can see the differences. All photos shot wide open at each focal length.

I bought this lens for wildlife photography for my canon 80D after watching reviews by Dustin Abbott on youtube. I have the canon 70-300L which has been marvelous for good quality wildlife shots but I needed a little more reach. I tried the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary but found that, only at 600mm, and on a tripod, was it an advantage over my canon lens at 300mm. Otherwise the weight, narrow field of view, and occasional hunting auto focus, was not worth it. The canon 100-400 L II was the answer but went for the Tamron after watching the reviews and I think I got what I wanted, for half the price. Its longer, but not heavier, than my 70-300mm.
Pixel peeping tests found the Tamron was sharper at certain distances and when cropping images, over the canon lens. Being longer than the canon lens meant the zoom and focus rings are further apart, a plus. I found I was bumping the zoom on the canon lens occasionally and losing shots.
I have to say, also, that I like the matching color of the black lens over the canon light colored telephotos. The longer length lends itself to better handholding and tracking of moving subjects.
I've shot several hundred wildlife shots now and paid special attention to autofocus and stabilization. My canon lens was stellar and this Tamron is just as good as far as I can tell. Picture quality is at least as good as my canon lens. I'm really liking the color and contrast of the images too.
For it's size the lens is very light and the balance when on the camera is great.
The only flaw I can find so far is the hood is not as robust as the canon and it doesn't screw down tight with the positive lock that I'm used to but it doesn't fall off either.
Add another $100 or so to this price because you'll need the tripod collar, sold separately.
Watch the Dustin Abbott reviews for more details but I think this lens is a steal for price and highly recommend it to beginner or pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very managable size and weight for hiking.
Reviewed in Canada on December 13, 2022
I'm glad that there are budget friendly options such as Tamron for hobby photographers such as I. Sure, maybe this Tamron 100-400mm is not as sharp as Canon L counterpart but for my needs it's plenty good. I also own Sigma 150-600mm but the size and weight of it discouraged me from taking it on hiking. Since I've bought the Tamron, my Sigma stays home when I venture out. Tamron is perfect size and weight for me and it's got enough telephoto reach to get chickadees, little squirrels or whatever other wildlife I happen to see when hiking. It's autofocus might be even faster than Sigma, not sure yet, I haven't used it as long as my Sigma yet. Stabilization is equally good. Bocca, sharpness and overall quality of the picture might not be as great as Sigma but little post processing can fix that with no problem. Also vignetting doesn't seem to be a problem but I am yet to work more with the lens to know it better. I've only had for two months but definitely love it for its portability.
