Yes it's big, and it's heavy, but I have a permanent home for mine, right next to my desk, and don't plan to be moving it often, if at all.
I'm not going to subtract any stars for this, but I couldn't get it to work on either wifi or wired ethernet. The setup software just simply wouldn't see it on either my iMac or my Macbook Pro, though it was showing as connected in my router manager. So I decided to quit messing about and wasting time and connected it to the iMac via USB, and that's fine. If I want to print something from the Macbook I just copy it to the NAS drive and print from the iMac, no great problem when you consider it's going to take several minutes to print, and 70 years to fade!
Still on my first set of ink cartridges. Of course, the cartridges are depleting at different rates. Grey is just about done, yellow is very low, but at least two or three of the others seem to be still full. I've ordered a full set of ten new cartridges, plus an additional grey, but only time will tell how quickly they all deplete, but I think the advice should be to order cartridges individually as needed; I mean, you can get them next day right here at Amazon. One of the cartridges is called Matte Black. I wonder if this one is only used if you print on matte paper? If so, that cartridge just won't get used as I'm always glossy. Again, only time will tell.
Be careful on paper. Some brands and types are incompatible and could damage the printer. I'm sticking with Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II for smaller sizes, and Ilford Galerie for A3 and A3+. Both are lovely glossy papers, and there's a couple of ICC profile choices for the Ilford paper. Looks like that 100-pack of HP Everyday Gloss in my cupboard needs a new home.
As for the actual mechanics of printing: I use Adobe Lightroom for all my photographical needs, and have installed Canon's own plugin called Print Studio Pro, which is invoked from LR direct. It works well and has all the necessary adjustments and settings you're likely to need. Just one caveat on printing: before invoking Print Studio Pro remember to crop your photograph into the exact proportions of the intended paper size, e.g., 4x6 or 5x7, as the height to width proportions differ. If you send an uncropped pic to print you will NOT get borderless, if that's what you need, as the printer will NOT auto-crop and expand the image to fill the paper, but will instead leave uneven white borders. A suitably cropped pic will give perfect borderless every time, even on A3+.
Finally, don't make the mistake of thinking this is an all-purpose printer. I sent a short Word document with just a few non-black words in it for print on A4 plain paper and it took as long to print as a full colour A4 photograph. This is a photo printer, remember that, though it does come with a CD printing thingie, which I'll never use..
Fast forward 6 years and I needed a replacement as my old canon pixma was donated to my daughter and, my current multifunction printer isn't upto the task. Unpacking the printer, removing all the protective tape, powering up the printer and installing the print head and the 10 ink cartridges took around 15 minutes, I connected the USB cable to my MacBook and installed the printer drivers and applications very easily. The one issue I had was locating the print head alignment routine on the Mac, no print head alignment occurred automatically even with paper in the sheet feeder, so I plan to perform this from a windows machine at a later date.
A test page was printed on regular printer paper to check everything was good, no issues.
I was itching to see what the print quality was like so I quickly located a photo of our Bengal cross female kitten taken recently with my 10 year old Nikon D70s dslr with a Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens. The kitten's marking consists of blacks, Browns, whites and greys running in differing directions so I was interested to see the printed result.
Inserting half a dozen sheets of canon glossy photo paper I selected print to A4 and pressed the go button, the result was simply breathtaking, her markings, the fur colour and even individual hair and whiskers all printed out beautifully, there are no issues with the print at all and I'm very happy with results so far. Next job is to finish screen calibration and get my desktop set up and get back into my lost love of photography.
After my first print out I set the wifi up which was simplicity in itself, I look forward to the forthcoming years and hope that this Canon product brings the joy and reliability of my previous Canon printer, some might say it should do at that price; but then it sits in the same bracket as my old Nikon camera as an enthusiast imaging device and I want at least enthusiast results.
Only issue is it is fussy with paper and has few choices on its menu. Also insists in only printing on some papers if they are places in the single sheet feeder. Not good if you need several hand outs or brochures. I find that contrary to the instructions it works OK with almost any paper and certainly prints envelopes. However, manual duplexing is a bit of a pain, but is nevertheless handled well as it prints all the page 1s and then gets you to turn the stack for page 2. So just about OK for day to day work if you're not to busy and have patience, but wonderful printing even in monochrome with the right paper.
