DPReview
Product Description
With a 25mm focal length and 47 degree angle of view, this lens sits right between wide and telephoto designs, making it a great choice as an all-around lens for your photography. A fast f1.8 circular aperture delivers beautifully soft defocused backgrounds for impressive portraits or when subject emphasis is the desired photographic effect. An inner focusing mechanism assures fast and accurate auto-focusing, and because it is an MSC design, it offers nearly silent focusing operation – a great feature when shooting HD movies.

Qualities:
-Sharp wide open throughout most of the frame with both near and far targets. Overall sharper than the Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4 (which I will compare to on several points below) when you consider edge performance.
-Less color fringing than the Panasonic even when both are shot on a Panasonic body (I tested both on my GX7 as well as E-M1)
-Pleasing/smooth bokeh rendering
-Fast autofocus (AF), comparable to the Panasonic
-Good AF performance even in very low light
-Much closer minimum minimum focus distance than Panasonic
-Smaller and lighter than Panasonic (balances better on the smallest MFT bodies) - much smaller if you include the dedicated hoods (finally Olympus includes a hood)
-Has solid build, despite being plastic and light. The "decorative cap" is more snug, less inclined to fall off as compared to the Olympus 45mm lens
There are lots of samples and analysis to back all of this up at Mu-43.com
For me, the Olympus 25mm f/1.8 is a definite keeper. A no-brainer. However, I will also be keeping the Panasonic lens for it's extra 2/3 stop of speed, more shallow DOF capabilty, and unique rendering character. Both are wonderful choices.
Pros:
Good price
Light weight
Compact
Affordable especially when bought used
Cons:
Manual focus is very difficult to use
Plastic build feels kinda cheap
No zoom option in camera to help with already difficult manual focus

It is fast in single AF while taking photos, but it is slower than some other lenses in continuous AF during video recording.
This is on an Olympus body too, not Panasonic. Sometimes it takes a while for it to even start to refocus in video.
You can see a comparison to the Panasonic 25mm 1.4 if you search for 'Robin Wong and Olympus 25mm'.
Basically smaller, lighter, closer focusing distance and similar sharpness, if not slightly better corners on the Oly.
On sale at $300 a no-brainer, but now that it's back to $400, could be a toss up.
If you need the marginally better low light or the Leica branding and have an extra $150 to spare.
For me closer focusing distance sealed the deal. You can get nice and close.
That's why I prefer the Panasonic 42.5mm to the Olympus 45mm on the other hand.
As a disclaimer, I am new to mirrorless camera / enthusiast-level photography but I have spent hundreds of hours researching cameras and lenses over the last 6 months. I finally settled on buying the Olympus O-MD E-M5 Mark II camera in black with the Olympus 14-42 EZ with the LC-37C lens cap and the Olympus 40-150mm. I also ended up buying this lens a month or so later.
After using this lens for about a month or so, here are my initial impressions:
Pros:
- Sharpness: This lens is sharp! Much sharper than the Olympus 14-42 EZ mentioned above. Even in completely bright light, the difference is notable, to the point where I use this lens as my walk around lens almost exclusively.
- Lightweight: Even though this lens is plastic, it feels solidly built and lightweight.
Cons:
- None that I can think of! With the recent price drop I think this lens is a great buy!
