Opticron Binoculars - How to Choose the Model That's Right for You
|
|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
Binocular Basics - What to Look for and WhyOne of the main ways to classify a binocular is by using a combination of its magnification and its size. For example, for an 8x42 model the number 8 denotes the magnification and means an object appears to be 1/8th of its actual distance away. In other words, an object 40 feet away appears to be only 5 feet from you and another 200 metres in the distance appears just 25 metres away. The second number, 42 in this case, is the diameter in millimeters of the objective lens (the lens at the end of the binoculars furthest from your eyes). This is the lens through which light enters the binocular. As a result, a larger objective lens will generally allow the image viewed through the binoculars to appear to be brighter. This means the binocular will be effective in lower light conditions such as at the start and end of the day or when there is heavy cloud cover. However, a larger objective lens also means the binocular will be heavier so you need to decide which feature is more important. |
Why Field of View Is Important When Choosing a BinocularThe field of view of a binocular is dependent on the overall optical design and is not simply a product of the magnification and objective lens diameter. Field of view is expressed as the width of panoramic view in feet from a distance of 1000 yards or in degrees where 1° is approximately 17.45m. A wide field of view can be helpful for different types of viewing and should be considered when deciding exactly what type of binocular is most suitable for you. When watching sporting events such as track and field or football you may want to see more than one athlete or player at a time to get a sense of how the race or a passage of play is progressing. At the opera house, theatre or ballet, seeing the whole stage brought closer can really enhance the experience of the evening’s entertainment. For those needing a binocular for outdoor activities, field of view can also be important. Tracking birds that are moving quickly amongst the branches of a tree or in and out of bushes can be easier. |
Using Your Binoculars - What Do I Need to Do to Set Them Up?Opticron binoculars allow you to compensate for any differences in visual acuity between your eyes using the dioptre adjuster. To set the binoculars, close your right eye and look through the left eyepiece with your left eye and using the centre focus wheel focus on an object until it is clear and sharp. Next, close your left eye and look through the right eyepiece with your right eye. If the object being viewed is not 100% clear, rotate the ring on the right side optical tube just below the eyepiece until the object being viewed comes into focus. The binoculars are now set and a perfectly clear and sharp image should be attainable using both eyes. Most Opticron binoculars provide the full field of view with or without glasses thanks to their long eyerelief eyecup design. To use the binoculars with glasses on, turn or twist the retractable eyecup assemblies to the ‘down’ position. Remember to twist them back to the ‘up’ position if you or anybody else wants to view without glasses. |
I've Made My Choice, What Else Do I Need to Know? The Opticron Limited Lifetime protection in the unlikely event that anything should go wrong with your binoculars. All Opticron binoculars are supplied with a soft case, lanyard and cleaning cloth--accessories that are not always included as standard with some binoculars. It is recommended that your binoculars are stored in the case when not in use. Fit the supplied dust caps and objective lens caps too when storing the binoculars to help keep the lenses as clean as possible. And remember, the Discovery WP PC and Savanna R PC binocular ranges are suitable for use by children as well as adults as the distance between the centre of the eyecups can be adjusted from as little as 52mm depending on the model. |

Product Description
Handy, lightweight, thoroughly modern porro prism binoculars uniquely suited to adults and children. With popular features such as waterproofing, long eye relief and ergonomic rubber armor, the optical set-up delivers brighter, sharper more three dimensional images compared to similarly priced roof prism binoculars. In addition the wide field eyepieces and a large depth of field make for easy location and tracking of wildlife. With a minimum IPD of 50mm, the Opticron Savanna WP can be used by children as young as 7 years without fear of eye strain. Weighing just over 17oz and standing just 4.5" high, the binocular fits easily into a backpack or sling bag or can be stored in its lightweight neoprene case. Like their sister compact models..

The FOV is on the lower side, but the contrast and the sharpness are great for the price range. I guess the diopter arrangements supports +-3 diopters at the most.(or +-2.5 at the least) The central focus knob is well lubricated and handles beautifully.
The only noticeable drawback is the not-perfect light reflection treatment inside the tubes, especially the bare metallic prism boxes inside. This can be an issue when facing strong sunlight or light sources near your objective lens as internal reflection and glare somehow messes the experience at night. A truly missed opportunity that could have made for a better binoculars if a little more care was taken inside the tubes.
Nonetheless, this is an excellent daytime binocular for mobile activities like bird watching. For those who couldn't get too close, I suppose 8 magnification can be a better solution.
had the price increase by 20%, and then was unavailable. I do astronomy, and my other primary binos are Canon image stabilized which cost an order of magnitude more. I hope Opticron can ramp up production, and bring these back at the mid-level pricepoint at which they were. A great
deal if priced right.

kaum Farbsäume. Nachstellung 3 m gut für Infekten Beobachtung.
My first impression was not very good - I said "underwhelmed". But, after some outdoor use I can give a much more positive and more objective review.
These are plastic-bodied binoculars, assembled to a good standard. The dual-speed focus is good and the dioptre correction is firm, so, handling is good.
Optically, I find it slightly difficult to set the interpupilliary distance quickly. The large depth-of-field makes setting the dioptre correction rather finicky. Also at close distances pincushion distortion is very evident, but this matters less in the field.
There may be a slight focus shift at close distances, meaning that the dioptre setting may need to be adjusted for close objects. At less than 4m obtaining a single image circle is not really possible (this is a parallax issue and applies to most porroprism binoculars; it's less obvious with narrower roof prisms).
However, once set up, the glasses are sharp across a good breadth of the image and there is no real evidence of colour fringing under most conditions. The image quality (contrast) suffers slightly at dusk. The viewing angle is around 8deg., which is not a lot but which does make them quite usable when hiking. Due to the low magnification, re-focussing is not a constant niggle.
Comparing these Opticrons directly with more expensive Kowa YF 6x30 Mk II (£125) it appears that there are strong design and construction similarities. Optically, the Kowas have a small edge in sharpness and contrast, but in most respects the two binoculars are very similar in performance. The Kowas 'feel' better. Low magnification makes them appear quite steady to hold. There is no tripod screw socket. The Kowa case is not very good: Opticron case is better - both are best carried in a larger case that accommodates a broader strap and a cleaning cloth, etc.
Conclusion: for the money these are decent glasses and show that good image quality is possible at less than £100 with the bonus of waterproofing, etc. Whether the plastic materials will last for decades compared to traditional metal/glass (non-waterproof) binoculars is the principal concern. These glasses are basically glued together and are virtually unserviceable - they are great tools nevertheless.
Recommendation: well worth £95. They will not be great for bird-spotting at any great distance.
