A rugged IP-67 rated housing stands up to harsh weather and drops, equipping law enforcement professionals, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts with reliable thermal imaging in tough conditions. This thermal imaging product has a frame rate greater than 9Hz and is regulated by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), Export Administration Regulations (EAR) under ECCN 6A003.b.4.b. and requires DOC authorization prior to shipment to all destinations other than the United States and Canada.

    I have been testing this as a solution to find downed game — mostly deer. So far it’s the off season and all I have been able to do is spot various animals in the woods and I can say it is amazing! You can actually see mice moving in leaves under trees from 30yds+
    I have clearly seen rabbits hiding 60y away and people are easily visible farther than that. I own the FLIR Scout TK as well and it is in my opinion not worth it. The range is not long enough/unit is not powerful enough for what hunters need. Granted this unit is WAY more expensive but it really works well. My only real complaint so far is that it does not store pictures like the TK does. If you want to use it tontake video/pictures you need to hook it up to aftermarket stuff to actually do the recording. For the price it should take pics/movies and store it in SD Cards. That is only reason I do not givenit 5 Stars

    Despite the misguided marketing by FLIR (come on FLIR, hunters make up about 5% of the population, most of us want to see animals alive), this device is a great way for people who actually appreciate wildlife to spot animals. As a wildlife photographer, I bought this to help me spot animals and then move in for a picture. The sensitivity is insanely good. I believe their estimate to spot a human at ~1100m is possible at night. I've seen the heat from humans at ~650m during the day. Squirrels at ~150m, rabbits at ~75m, coyotes and deer at about 200m (I'm sure much further is possible, I just haven't seen it yet). The biggest drawback is the inability to stop the auto-ranging (gain). This device will sometimes auto range in a way that makes it difficult to spot animals because the surrounding brush or tree branches is showing at about the same brightness. Some of the other more minor drawbacks are grainy screen, eye cup that causes lens fogging, limited diopter adjustment, and very long charge time (about equal to the discharge time, ie. ~4-5 hrs.). But overall, I'm very impressed with the 640x480 version of this. I don't think I'd recommend the lower resolution version, but I can easily recommend this.

    I used to work at FLIR as an employee in engineering and production. However, I work at another aerospace company now.

    The NUC (non-uniform correction) on mine is extremely poor (causes what looks a lot like noise) and also has lots of vertical bands. I feel they should be ashamed of shipping a second rate low grade product like this. It also seems to be getting worse rapidly. Makes it very difficult to use for intended function. It might be good for spotting fires (very hot objects), but I am not a firefighter. It also does a poor job of contrast, more like shades of grey, instead of properly performing auto-gain function.

    It may be that the sensor is also drifting quickly and the factory calibration of the pixels is bad, and the NUC function is unable to correct the degradation.

    Build quality seems decent, battery life is about an hour for me.

    And for reference, I am looking at animals in 0 degree Celsius weather, puddles iced over. I am able to see a warm cow that walks out of a barn, but certainly not game animals (and no, they do not have their winter coats). The interesting thing, is that a stump early in the morning before sunrise, that is cold, looks the same as an elk, in greyscale. This should not be, considering the emissivity, lack of winter coat, and all considered. However a human face is a little brighter. Doesn't matter if I am only 30 ft away.

    I have a great many hours operating FLIR products and this is quite a shame, compared to if a little care was taken.

    FLIR used to stand for quality.

    Wow..... I've been into night vision for a few years but this is my first thermal vision item. I have to say that I'm totally impressed. Great optics, great resolution. It doesn't store any images, but works perfectly with a mini DVR. I got one from Orion (the telescope people) and it works great. Orion 58125 StarShoot LCD-DVR $210 at Amazon. Really nice, compact battery powered unit. Here's a terrible video that I made last night (my first). I'll make some more over the next month (using a tripod and microphone) and will try to post them up. But the two things together are flawless.

    I went on Safari in Africa with this product. It was simple and intuitive to use. Its best quality image was one hour after sunset. The range is long (you can see the moon with it). Animals are hot spots easily seen 500M away. Elephants and hippos >1mile easily seen. You can use it well during the day, but honestly human eyesight in the day is superior. I used it at night and during the twilight hours to spot game. Made finding well camouflaged lions in the tall grass easy to be seen. My only regret it that it does not have a mechanism to store a video or a still image. I would suggest adding an SD card slot and an extra button or two for this function.

    Contrast between animals and foliage is poor under a lot of different conditions. During the winter here in Utah, when snow is on the ground and we have enough sun during the day to warm the brush, rocks etc. When you go out at night you cant discern between the foliage, rocks and coyotes etc. During certain conditions and terrain it works better, but not as well as it should for the money. I have mine on a telescoping pole up through my sun roof and connected to a 10" TV monitor but have to pull it back inside every 5 minutes because of the auto shutdown. I cant seem to get any help from FLIR about turning the auto shutdown off. Poor technical support to say the least.
