But the more I used the Think Ergo, the more annoying it became. The attachments to the strap brackets were via two quick-release clips that kept getting in my way of using the camera, to the extent I had to disconnect one of them to be able to access the camera's controls. And the shoulder pad kept slipping backwards.
Buying the BlackRapid became a no-brainer when I learned that its quarter-inch screw mount would ALSO attach to the side of my L-bracket, meaning it didn't tie up the tripod mount and I still had full tripod access. It's sturdier and better made. Previously I used the Peak Design clip that attaches to a backpack, but it kept falling off. A lot of people like the Spider Holster that fixes the camera to a belt around your waist, but to me that's just an invitation to accidentally bash your camera against a door frame. With the BlackRapid, you can pretty much keep the camera riding on your hip just behind you, so it's out of the way. And you don't have to detach anything to bring it up to take a shot.
I had a challenge, at first, figuring out how to don it properly. I’m sure other people probably knew right away how to properly don it. If you are like me, please allow me to spare you some frustration and embarrassment.
Here are few important key concepts if you are new to this strap and donning it.
There is an underarm strap. The front-end of the strap is plastic snap in part. The back is the “S” hook. Unfasten the front-end snap-in from the main strap and keep the rear “S” hook attached to the main strap. Unless you’re elastic-man there’s no way you are going to hook that “S” to the main strap while its on your back or you have another person do it for you.
The main strap orientation on your body: The letter on the strap is always the front and must face front. The underarm strap plastic snap-in socket always points outboard or away from your body to the side. The overall strap should sling diagonal across your chest. Look in the mirror. If these three things are not true, you donned it incorrectly.
Assuming you have it donned correctly at this point, attached the underarm strap’s snap in to the main strap’s socket which is the one facing outward, or away to your side.
I tried to don this with the underarm strap attached on both sides and it kept getting tangled and twisted and often found that I had main strap oriented wrong trying to get the underarm strap fitted properly. I finally broke the donning down into two stages: Put the main strap on first ensuring its properly oriented and then attaching the underarm strap last.
The overall strap feels a little stiff brand new but like a pair new shoes, I think frequent use will break it in.
It holds my Nikkor 5.6 200mm – 500mm lens with ease. Although Black Rapid recommends attaching the strap to the lens bayonet and I have done this, I found myself switching lens sometimes and I may attach it the camera body in these circumstances. Either way it works and the adapter doesn’t untwist compromising my equipment.
Despite an uneasy start, I rate this strap highly and recommend it to others.
