I also own a P800 and have had multiple EPSON 1430, So I compare to them.
As to some of the reviews about clogs, I've had a few but nothing a cleaning or two wouldn't solve. The trick is to keep it in regular use, and check your nozzles before every workday to ensure it's clean. Also if you are going away for more than a week make sure its autoclean is set up to regularly turn on.
Pros
- Ink is 37.5% Cheaper than a P800. I did the math, if you regularly print more than once a week get this printer instead of anything cheaper, you'll save in the long run.
-Auto Cut, It cuts paper for you!! 1800 prints and the knife has yet to dull.
- Roll paper loading is heavy duty with multiple motors.
- Borderless tank can be replaced unlike cheaper printers.
Cons
-It's really heavy. Should have came with a stand. You need 2 large people to move it. Forget about moving it alone once it's placed.
-Auto Cleans constantly, You can never get rid of notifications on the LCD to "Preform powerful cleaning" seems like an epson scam to get you to use up more ink.
-Printer runs DARK, your prints will be dark. I haven't found a workaround for this besides print settings in PS to +7 brightness. That works. Epson P800 and 1430 were spot on with brightness, the P5000 takes a lot of testing.
-Only works well with roll paper. Using cut paper is not easy and will give you a headache. Prepare to only use rolls.
- Build quality is cheap plastic. At this price range I wish the paper tray was aluminum. Paper tray is junk.
What I wish it had:
-Flash Storage keep PNGs of often printed files on the printer for easy use without PC.
- 36inch tray
- Better LCD - maybe even small preview or live print status. Iphone 4 level display would be miles ahead of the 2005 junk on this.
I quickly made my money back with this printer, and it's worked for me since. If you are in an apartment and don't have the room for Epson's larger offerings like the P6000, I would recommend the P5000. If you occasionally print, go with a cheaper model like the P800 or P900.
Overall I haven't had a terrible experience with Epson, At this point if I had to replace it, I would stick with them. The firmware upgrades have smoothed some bugs out as well.
However, Epson's software, icc profile system, and driver / firmware are all still too chaotic. Half the time I use this printer I have to go delete and reinstall drivers. Nozzle jet heads are more finicky than ever. The paper tray cassette is inefficient (was far better on the 4800). The ink doors pop open ifs you look at them the wrong way. Lastly, it's the first printer I've ever had that developed nozzle clogs while printing (4800 never did).
