From the manufacturer
Meet one of the smallest 15.6-inch performance laptop on the planet.
InfinityEdge display: The virtually borderless display maximizes screen space by accommodating a 15.6-inch display inside a laptop closer to the size of a 14-inch, thanks to a bezel measuring just 5.7mm.
One-of-a-kind design: Measuring in at a slim 11-17mm and starting at just 4 pounds (1.8 kg) with a solid state drive, the XPS 15 is one of the world’s lightest 15-inch performance-class laptops.
A stunning view, wherever you go.
Dazzling detail: With the FHD display (1920 x 1080), you can see each detail of every pixel without needing to zoom in.
Color: With 100% Adobe RGB color, the XPS 15 covers a wider color gamut and produces shades of color outside conventional panels so you can see more of what you see in real life. And with over 16 million colors, images appear smoother and color gradients are amazingly lifelike with more depth and dimension.
Beautiful from any angle: The anti-Glare screen combined with superior 400-nit brightness frees you to enjoy your entertainment outdoors. Plus, the IPS panel provides a wider viewing angle, so you can share your screen without missing a thing.

I/O: The keyboard has a great tactile feel for a laptop, but I would always get a dedicated keyboard with cherry MX switches, preferably blue. The camera is not a big deal, it's actually okay, and image quality is fine as well. Not a really big deal if you don't video chat much, but even then I've used it for talking to friends and it's completely fine.
Modularity: This laptop's ram, wifi card, and storage can all be upgraded; so, even if you buy the baseline version, you can always upgrade its components which is nice. Personally, I opened it up and switched out the killer wifi card for an intel wifi card. I plan on upgrading to terabyte by the end of NEXT year. Just a warning for potential buyers who decide to open the back case, be very careful when unscrewing the bottom plate, the screws are really soft, and I slightly stripped my screws, so the next time I open it I'll have to be even more careful. Just keep that in mind.
Software support, productivity, in regards to battery life: I can have multiple applications opened all at once: Visual studio, with TeX works and chrome; or maybe MatLab and TeX works; or even RStudio with Adobe Reader Touch. At the library I can last a few hours without charging while having these applications run in various combinations. I know that it's not any CAD design, but for simple programming and scripting for different algo implementations, for exercise, LeetCode and school assignments, the XPS is a champ. You can also use Atom or visual studio code, both of which runs really well. Also, you can get Ubuntu Distro with the Linux subsytem if that's your thing, and Microsoft is supposed to be coming our with its own terminal. Using Microsoft office is also pretty nice; I really like word and PowerPoint over any other word processor and presentation production software.
Doubles as a pseudo-desktop, and other recommended accessories: i recently got the DELL SHM2419 which is the monitor in the photo attached to this review. I love to use it with the laptop, and I love extending the displays. I highly recommend getting the monitor with the laptop, especially since the laptop is cheaper than when I bought it, which was around $1400 at the time. I highly recommend buying this model and slowly upgrading the components over the year; this is durable laptop. Also consider getting a laptop case, a wireless mouse, nice headphones, maybe Bose, and a cherry MX blue switch keyboard; I have a Nidoo laptop case with a felt lining.
Mild and occasional gaming: I know that BF5 is not a "mild" game by any standard, but the GTX 1050ti laptop edition handles it pretty well. Frame rate is adequate enough to play a few matches of conquest for hours on end, and it's obvious that the fans will be on 100%. It's not very good for the dell XPS in the long run to run intensive games, but it will run them fine in the short run.
Recreation: Watching other media like youtube and netflix, or other streaming media services like spotify is complete fine, although I will admit that the speakers are kinda bad; I would recommend getting a proper pair of headphones either way because laptop speakers aren't meant to be great imo, so I have very low standards in that regard. Still, the audio hardware seems great and listening to music through the 3.5mm jack is great.
TL;DR: if you are an undergraduate in STEM, or even a grad student, or any professional doing meaningful and difficult work you ought to have this laptop, the specs beat the Mac and any other laptop I can think of off the top of my head. Even this specific edition is adequate enough; although if your want the new i7 processor with 6 cores you should look at getting this year's most recent model.
I would definitely buy this laptop all over again.

I would definitely buy this laptop all over again.
Pros:
1. Very fast and responsive (6-cores)
2. Great display
3. Great battery life (10+ hours with how I use it)
4. Compact form factor for 15”
5. High quality construction, similar to MacBook Pro
6. Much less expensive for similarly configured MacBook Pro
Cons:
1. Palm rests seem to collect fingerprints more easily than some notebooks (minor nit-pick)
If I had to do it over again I would buy this same exact model
Shortly after I realized my headset wasn't recognized when I plugged it in. Looked it up, turns out the Realtek HD Audio Manager was breaking it. Go into your task manager and disable it's load on startup and you should be fine after a reboot. After getting the headset working, however, there was a weird echo. Turns out another bit of bloat from HP was causing that. Open up the Maxx Audio Pro software and turn off the Bass Boost. I'd recommend uninstalling it afterwards so it can't be accidentally re-enabled.
These aren't things that should have been issues, but they were overall all easy to diagnose and quick to resolve. As everyone else has mentioned, the keyboard isn't the best and the graphics card isn't for gaming, but the laptop wouldn't lose a star for that. If the computer booted up correctly the first time, I would have given it 5 stars.
The computer is solidly built. The touch pad is accurate (even if I nearly always use a wireless mouse). The screen is bright and colors are accurate. The battery life is amazing (especially if you use the battery saver features). The ability to upgrade the ram, wifi, and SSD is extremely welcome in a computer so thin. I had planned to replace the wifi card, the ram and the SSD, but unlike the earlier models which seemed to have slower Toshiba SSDs, mine came with a fairly quick Samsung NVMe SSD. I have a Wi-Fi 6 Killer wireless card I intend to replace the current card with, and will be getting the 32gb of ram later. I'll also be replacing the thermal paste to improve the thermals once I've got the time. I'll update on the progress once I've done it.
All in all, this is an excellent computer I'd recommend to anyone who isn't afraid to open up the computer and check connections once they've received it. Sadly, I can't recommend it to people who aren't at least a tiny bit technically savvy since, given the number of reviews stating issues, it seems fairly likely that you'll have a simple problem you need to fix. Hopefully they can fix this in the next revision.
