Since I purchased as a refurbished or renewed camera, I took a gamble on how well the renewed product would be. I was not disappointed. It had been restored to near new conditions. There were a couple of nicks or scratches on the touchscreen, but nothing that would make me return the product...and I figured I would quickly put my own nicks or scratches on the camera.
All of the optics, sensors, knobs, buttons, etc were in perfect working order. It was like getting a brand new camera, but at a restored camera price.
Lens Quality
The 18-55 lens is a nice, medium size lens that will still allow you to get some nice soft focus elements. Since it is a Fuji factor lens, you know right out of the gate that your lens is compatible with this camera.
Picture Quality
Unbelievable is what I say. In some cases, I had to do a lot of tweaking to pictures with my previous camera; however, the picture quality was amazing right out of the gate. It was crisp and tight, and the color quality was near perfect as what I was seeing in reality.
The soft focus elements when coupled with a longer lens are stunning. Any tweaks I needed to make to the pictures were to help with mood creation or match what my creative vision would be.
Flip Out Screen
The flip out screen was a nice addition to the camera that I did not have from my previous cameras. I found the flip out screen provided the ability leverage low angle shots, and see what I was shooting instead of guessing. This screen has enabled me to take some amazing low angle shots that I only dreamed out.
Touch Screen
The touch screen is easy to use, and I am still getting used using it versus all the normal menu items and arrow keys. I still use the physical buttons as that is what I am most comfortable with; however, the clarity of the touch screen (or screen in general) is really good.
Weight
The camera is lightweight and compact which is great. Even with a decent lens on the camera it is still lighter than most of their competitors.
General Items
In addition to the light weight of the camera, I love the old school feel of the dials and knobs on the camera. It brings me back to some of my first film cameras and the look is incredible. Whats under the hood is also amazing, but the look and feel of it is an added bonus.
The SD media slots are great as you can have to two (2) SD cards and let them perform two different functions at the same time (photo and video). The RAW picture format is great and easily works with Adobe Lightroom for post production manipulation.
Overall
Overall, this camera is great and it has a great price point especially if you are looking to get into this market for a relatively affordable price point. If you are a Canon or Nikon user, just realize that you will probably need to buy new lenses for the camera unless you have third party lenses like Sigma.
The camera supports a number of third party lenses, but double check before you buy them to ensure they are compatible with this camera. If you want the latest and greatest features you might want to check out the X-T3, but for me, since I was new to this line, I went with the more affordable solution. I now have to two (2) camera bodies exactly same for the same price as one (1) from its competitor.
If you are looking for a change or certain factors like weight matter to you, check out the FujiFilm line up. You won't be disappointed.
I adore this camera. I shopped around a long time, comparing various brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji, sensor sizes (full frame, APS-C, and micro 4/3rds), and styles (mirrorless vs DSLR). I ultimately went with the Fuji X-T2 and the 18-55mm native Fuji lens.
As a newbie to the hobby, I appreciate and recommend the X-T2 for the following reasons:
1. The on-camera dials dials - The elements of exposure are all right there on dials at the top of the camera, helping me learn the very basics of photography in a intuitive sense. Prior to studying photography, I never understood the whole A, M, P, S etc. modes on other cameras. While I understand it now, I still feel that Fuji’s aperture, shutter speed, and ISO dials are a boon to the amateur looking to actually understand what his or her camera is doing. I consciously wanted to give myself the intuitive knowledge of the exposure triangle, and using the knobs (when I want to) forced me to internalize what shutter speed, aperture, or ISO will work for each shot. I can now estimate exposure without relying on the camera’s auto functions — something that is too easy to never learn with today’s digital cameras. This system just makes sense to me, and I enjoy it much more than those other systems with preset modes and a selector wheel.
2. Professional build quality - The X-T2, with the 18-55mm “kit” lens, feels super study with it’s mostly-metal design. This in no way feels like a toy. This is a professional tool that is so solid I imagine I will be using it for decades.
3. The fantastic lenses and image quality - the 18-55mm “kit” lens doesn’t really deserve the word “kit” because it is so nice. Like the camera, it is metal, solid, and delivers excellent quality. The native Fuji lenses are known to be one of the major draws for the Fuji X system. The only downside is the price, as they just haven’t gone down much in price on the used market.
4. The viewfinder - I love the viewfinder and how it gives me an accurate portrayal of what will actually come out of my camera when I take the picture. I know this is how all mirrrorless cameras work, but Fuji nailed the screen’s clarity. And if I want to use the screen, I appreciate it’s two-plane tilting.
5. Overall size, feel, and look - People think I’m shooting film when they see the X-T2. It’s not chunky like DSLRs, it has that retro look with just enough buttons in the right places. It feels incredibly well-balanced with the kit lens. When I pick up a DSLR, that molded plastic just feel cheap compared to the solid, compact metal design of the X-T2. I am surprised how much this matters to me, actually. Somehow this feel like what a camera is *supposed* to feel like when many others fall short.
6. Fuji’s JPEGs and film simulations - I still have yet to really dive into Lightroom or Photoshop and edit raw files, but the Fuji JPEG colors — particularly skin tones — are beautiful right out of the camera. The Fuji film simulations are gorgeous and, I find, aren’t the gimmick I thought they’d be. Switching to Classic Chrome gives a beautiful retro-family-vacation-film look, while Velvia bumps colors for landscapes and Acros delivers gorgeous high-contrast black and whites.
In fact, the JPEG image manipulation tools are so good that I am happy letting the camera process the JPEGs itself. It’s easy enough to save it as a raw and JPEG and alter it right in camera for different post-processing effects.
Overall, I am so very happy with this camera. As I continue to progress in my photography, this camera continues to impress me at each level. I highly recommend it to the novice like me, looking for a quality camera to enjoy for years.
Overall great camera, excellent condition at a great price ($1,069 at the time of purchase)
