Product Description

The Sekonic L-308X-U Flashmate Light Meter is a portable and versatile meter that offers dedicated functions for photography, cinematography and HD cinematography. Featuring a sliding lumisphere, the meter can measure incident or reflected light via a lens with a 40° reception angle. The L-308X-U provides a wide metering range from 0 to 19.9 EV at ISO 100, works with exposure times starting as low as 1/8000 all the way up to 60 seconds, and offers a broad flash range from f/1.0 to f/90.9 at ISO 100. The meter’s settings can be easily viewed on the customizable LCD display, which automatically lights up when working at 5 EV or darker. Photo mode allows for still shooting with aperture and shutter priority, Cine mode lets you select frame rates between 8-128 fps, and HD Cine mode is perfect for shooting with DSLR or mirrorless cameras. Additionally, PC sync terminal and a cordless flash measuring options are available. Powered by a single AA battery, the L-308X-U weighs approximately 3.5 oz. for convenient portability.

Features Three Meters in One:

Keeping pace with the demands of modern image creators that move from assignment to assignment, the L-308X-U features three metering modes:

Photo Mode

The L-308X-U offers full exposure control for photographers on-location or in the studio. Measurement data for flash and ambient light readings are clearly displayed on screen, as well as ambient EV measurement. In addition to Shutter Priority Mode, the new Aperture Priority Mode offers photographers care free measurements where depth-of-field is critical.

HD Cine Mode

Gives cinematographers a compact solution for scouting locations or as a quick go-to solution while they are on set. The 308X-U lets users select from a range of frame rates and shutter angles, while measuring accurately, to within one-tenth of a stop. Also, the addition of ISO 850 greatly assists cinematographers by giving them the option of taking measurements in the native ISOs of many of today's professional cinema cameras.

Cine Mode

Designed with the professional in mind, the FLASHMATE L-308X can take on the challenges of digital cinematography. Select from the right combination of frame rates and shutter angles to achieve the exposure control necessary with one-tenth stop accuracy. Truly universal, the FLASHMATE L-308X offers Lux (lx) and foot-candle (fc) readout enabling a quick set up of lighting in a compact, affordable and easy-to use design.

Sekonic L-308X-U Flashmate Meter

Three Ways to Measure

Slide the built-in lumisphere to the right and insert the lumidisc (optional) into the provide slot over the light receiver. The L-308X is now ready to measure flat subjects or lighting contrast with precision.

Lumishpere

The Lumisphere provides incident light readings for nearly foolproof exposure readings and enables lighting that scene before talent arrives.

Lens

The Lumidisc is perfect for lighting green screens, adjusting ratios and taking lux and foot-candle measurements.

Lumidisc (optional)

Reflected light readings enable measuring the brightness of subject tones, gray cards, light sources or window light.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weird option choices
Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2019
Excellent light meter. Works for ambient and flash. Flash metering takes ambient light into account (as it ought to do).

Problem is setting the X-sync interval, and keeping precision. In normal mode, exposure time may be set in full stop increments from one second, to ¹/500s, then ¹/75th, ¹/80th, ¹/90th, ¹/100th. In this mode, the meter shows ¹/10th stop precision, so one's studio strobes can be set accurately. Why is this a problem? Because my X-sync interval is ¹/180s.

I can change the mode, so that the exposure time can be set in ½ stop increments, then set the exposure time to ¹/180s, but then the meter no longer shows ¹/10th stop values, defaulting to ½ stop precision.

The mode can also be changed to ⅓ stop increments for exposure time, with the meter showing ⅓ stop precision. Again, this means that I cannot set the exposure time on the meter to ¹/180s.

Nevertheless, great meter for continuous and strobe lighting, or mixed lighting conditions. It has other features too, such as one touch metering. In strobe mode, press the button once, and it is ready to meter the strobe, giving a value when the flash occurs. Not happy with the lighting? Want to adjust the strobes? Go ahead, fire again. The new value shows on flash, no need to press the button again.

It also has a sync-cord socket, for metering on strobe trigger, —I do not use this feature, as I have a radio tigger in my hand,— and two cine modes, for those who do cinematography or vlogging, and can work in incident or reflected light mode. There is an optional accessory, the Lumidisc, (about 12% of the cost of this product), used for measuring light ratios, or checking for consistency of flat surface lighting, or light fall-off.

PROs → Fantastic meter, high precision, multiple modes, high EV range.

CONs→ Does not offer certain exposure times at highest precision setting.
