From the manufacturer
This lens completely unlocks the pleasure of photography
"We want to deliver a perfect image to people who love photography." That’s our obsessive goal for all Tamron lenses. This goal forms the basis of our concept for the SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045). The exceptional image quality of this fast fixed focal lens makes it worthy of being the lens that marks the milestone 40th anniversary of the SP (Superior Performance) Series. Uncompromising resolution at wide-open aperture combines with a velvety bokeh defocus blur that gently blends away from the ultra-sharp focus area. Ghosting and flare are suppressed to the utmost degree by the newly-developed BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating. Additionally, our new and exclusive Dynamic Rolling-cam mechanism enables the heavy F/1.4 focusing unit to move with incredible accuracy at high-speed and deliver the best AF performance in every shooting situation. Truly, the Model F045 is the distillation of all of the optical technologies and manufacturing knowhow that Tamron has developed.
Optical performance that defines the ultimate Tamron lens ever made
We endeavored to achieve ultra-high quality where every shape is captured with perfect fidelity. So we meticulously eradicated any optical aberrations that could reduce image quality. In particular, we have eliminated the on-axis chromatic aberrations that plague fast-aperture lenses, and the sagittal coma flares that reduce peripheral image quality. This is accomplished by deploying 14 elements in 10 groups, a dense arrangement for a fixed focal lens. The optical construction includes a generous arrangement of special glasses, four LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements.
Leveraging Tamron's experience creating beautiful bokeh
The SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD produces genuinely beautiful bokeh defocus blur both in front of and behind the plane of focus, a characteristic shared with Tamron's legendary 90mm F/2.8 macro lens. The major difference is the fast F/1.4 aperture. Normally, as the lens aperture opens subtle on-axis chromatic aberration appears as color fringe. So we created a countermeasure to thoroughly overcome these deficiencies and produce bokeh that blends in beautifully without introducing aberrant color in front of or behind the focal plane.
Newly developed BBAR-G2 Coating delivers stunning clarity and contrast
Tamron has long been an innovator of coating technologies that prevent ghosting and flare. Second-generation BBAR-G2 Coating is a groundbreaking advancement that provides vastly improved performance compared to the original BBAR Coating. The coating corrects for ghosting and flare to an unprecedented extent, and renders fine subject detail with true clarity and stunning contrast even under backlit conditions.
Exceptionally reliable, fast and accurate AF that unleashes creativity in every situation
The AF drive is equipped with Tamron's proprietary USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor. Additionally, Tamron's all-new Dynamic Rolling-cam mechanism operates the heavy focusing unit of the large F/1.4 aperture with high speed and accuracy. This breakthrough ensures stable AF performance and improves reliability even under the harsh shooting conditions of professional use, including high and low temperature extremes. This exceptional lens is also equipped with a Full-Time Manual Focus override system so photographers can instantly make fine adjustments to the point of focus, even in the AF mode.

Bokeh has ever so slight onion ring. Honestly, if Ken didnt say anything, I probably woulndt have noticed it.
Vignetting is prevalent, somewhat heavy, but easily fixed in post. I personally like it.
I havent tested coma and fringing yet, will update. From what ive read, there is none.
Tested: D850
Focus lens shift/lens tilt - perfect (flat focus pic, corners)
Auto Focus back/front - perfect (45 degree)
Decentered - perfect (Zeiss Star)
My tests are far from lab, but theyre good enough to tell if something is wrong with the optics. I tested my Nikkor 24 1.4 and it was back focused by +3. Thats a $2200 lens.
Shout out to Ken (The Angry Photographer). This lens is under priced, better and $600 less than Nikkor 35 1.4.
Tamron is spot on with this lens.
Ive read the 4 star with concerns of side point focus problems on D850. Tamron has the docking bay to fix this, but IF youre using a D850, Nikon already put out a firmware update v1.10 to also fix this. I personally havent had any issues, but I also updated the firmware prior to getting the lens.
Pic of D850/Tamron 35 taken with D3200/Nikon 50mm 1.8 series e. Flower pic is straight out of camera. I changed nothing but cropped 1:1, f3.2 1/320 iso64. Thats pretty amazing to be honest.

Tamron stated they put all of their technical know-how into this lens as it marks their 40th Anniversary and you can tell there is quality top to bottom. Price is justified. Fantastic Lens.
Only thing is the lens struggles with focusing in heavily back lit photos. Though that is an issue with many lenses.
Appreciate the hook up on this Lens guys!!
On my D750 focus is fast, quiet, and good overall and seems to hit reasonably well both central and side focus points. On my D850 however, while the central focus points work decently, the far left and right columns of points are heavily front focusing, a problem similar to what the sigma 35 art does on Nikon camera bodies. So far he only 35mm 1.4 prime that I've tried that focuses perfectly with all focus points is Nikon's own 35mm 1.4g, which is no surprise.
I really, really love the optics of this lens, it is a true 35mm focal length (the sigma is probably closer to 33mm, you can tell a tiny difference in depth of field). However I wish It did not have a problem with some of my D850's focus points.
If you shoot a D750 or one of Nikon's new mirrorless bodies z6/z7, I say go for it. It works great on the Z6 I have.
And lastly, this seller sold me what is clearly an open box lens as 'new'. The rear lens cap was a Nikon one, and the front cap was a promaster one, so somebody had returned it and lost the caps or swapped them.
