From the manufacturer

Tamron 20mm 2.8

Capture your most expansive imagination

The 20mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 is fast handling and packs expressive power that is the signature of fixed focal lenses. Light weight and compact, the Model F050 is extremely portable, ideal for situations where you need to travel light. The Model F050 is a creative tool that dynamically captures scenery by maximizing the perspective unique to ultra wide-angle lenses. The incredibly short 0.11m (4.3 in) MOD (Minimum Object Distance) makes it possible to get closer to your subjects than you’d ever imagined. In addition to the F/2.8 aperture, the Model F050 is constructed using special glass materials including LD (Low Dispersion) and GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements effectively arranged to quash aberrations. This lens provides outstanding optical performance across the entire frame, and delivers a sharp image, right down to the texture of the subject. With Moisture-Resistant Construction and dirt-resistant Fluorine Coating, photographers can shoot confidently outdoors.

Ultra wide-angle is dramatically creative

Tamron 20mm 2.8 Sony E

This lens provides outstanding optical performance and overall image quality, characteristics relentlessly demanded from a prime, fixed focal lens. The expert arrangement of the LD and GM specialized glass elements greatly controls aberrations, including chromatic aberrations. Tamron’s proprietary BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating reduces ghosting and flare, which can otherwise occur when taking a photo against the sun. Moreover, leveraging your camera body’s features* it delivers, throughout the frame, high resolution performance that maximizes the benefits of the latest high-megapixel cameras. Whether shooting on the street, full-scale landscapes or architectural photography, this lens delivers exceptionally crisp, colorful and beautiful images and helps you fulfill your creative ambitions. *When shooting with the camera’s lens correction function enabled.

Tamron 20mm 2.8 Sony E

Get closer to your subject. As close as 0.11m.

One of the key features that makes this lens so exciting is its amazing ability to shoot close-ups. With this lens, you can get closer to an object than you’d ever imagined. At the 0.11m (4.3 in) MOD, the lens achieves its maximum magnification ratio of 1:2. You’ll never again be frustrated because you cannot get close to an object while shooting. This remarkable performance allows users to create compositions that exploit dramatic perspective (closer subjects are larger, and distant ones are smaller) and that are unique to wide-angle lenses. By getting close to an object, you can produce a one-of-a-kind photo and leverage the beautifully blurred background bokeh.

The extreme portability enhances the limitless versatility of the lens

Tamron 20mm 2.8 Sony E

Take it with you anywhere. This lens travels as well as it performs. And because it’s matched to lightweight full-frame mirrorless cameras, your entire system becomes light, fast and nimble. It has a very compact body, weighing just 220g (7.8 oz) and an overall length of 64mm (2.5 in). It’s comfortably portable, highly maneuverable and amazingly easy to use and compose. Because the overall length does not change when focusing, you can get as close to an object as you need to without fear of accidentally bumping the front element. The lens has the same 67mm filter diameter as the other members of the series of Tamron high-speed lenses for Sony E-mount cameras. So you can swap filters (like polarizers), lens caps and other accessories for convenience. Who says great things can’t come in small packages?

    Good budget lens, some downsides
This lens is what I feel is 4 stars. It does the trick and is a great price for a lens, which was all I was looking for when I purchased it. However, when compared to other lenses I own (my Sigma) this one has some downsides. The outer distortion is pretty noticeable so it’s not the best lens for those who need their lines to stay very straight. If you aren’t too worried about that, then this lens will do just fine. Note the 20mm is 30mm with ASPC crop. It’s still a wide enough lens for some good outdoor shots, but if you want something very wide and have a full frame camera, definitely look for something else. The other downsides: It’s not as sharp as it could be and isn’t the greatest in low light. I think if you’re looking for a budget lens to get some experience with that this is great, but wouldn’t expect perfection from it. I like that it’s economical and does take pretty good photos in outdoor lighting. The autofocus is loud and on the slower side, but I personally like hearing the little clicks it makes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best affordable wide angle!
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022
I bought this lens as a budget astrophotography and landscape lens for my Sony A7iii. Firstly, I had read a few reviews on various sites that the threading would give me trouble attaching it to the Sony A7iii specifically, but I had zero issues with that at all.

Secondly, the lens does come with both a rear and front lens cap as well as a lens hood, however the lens hood is fairly cheap. Despite this, the lens hood still helps with reducing flaring and glare in images.

There are so many pros to this lens that will outweigh the cons, especially for the cost.

Pros - Small/compact, sharp at f/2.8, very affordable, decent build quality, distortion is very mild, close focus distance.

Cons - Autofocus is a tad slow and fairly noisy, build quality is decent but at the end of the day it's still plastic, some vignetting at f/2.8.

For me, I do primarily photography on it, so autofocus noise is fairly unimportant as I'm not doing film work. A lot of my photos are also on tripods and manually focused anyways, so autofocus speed is less important to me as well.

I'd say the image quality I've gotten from this lens is easily comparable with lenses that are twice the cost or more! If you're on a tight budget but still want a full frame lens, go for it!

Given the price, this is easily 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Affordable wide angle lens with great quality!
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2020
i needed a wider angle lens than 35mm for my Sony A7riii. After seeing samples of the Sony G master 16-35 2.8 I decided to check out the price. When I was finished laughing at the $2200 price tag I was left choosing between this $300 Tamron and the $900 Sigma Art 20mm 1.4. I decided to take a chance on this lens since I've had such an awesome experience with my workhorse lens 70-200 2.8 g2.
For $300 I expected a mediocre lens that I would regret buying. After returning from a trip to the Smoky Mountains I was blown away by the photos I took with lens. The COLOR POP and contrast really makes the photos look alive. (The 2 samples I uploaded are raw converted straight to jpg)
This lens is "soft and creamy" instead of "razor sharp" like the sigma arts and Sony g master lens Which is both good and bad. You can sharpen to your satisfaction in post and still get an excellent image. My 35mm sigma art is sometimes too sharp for landscapes and can make blades of grass and tree leafs very noisy and nasty so It's not an issue for me. At 2.8 it's a little too soft. f4 to f13 is perfect. f16 is a little soft and requires a little clarity and sharpening in post.
No the autofocus is not lighning fast like other reviews say but its not sluggish either. I love that it's weather proof but wish It had a af to mf switch on it that is needed for astrophotograhy and very low light shots. You will have to use back button auto focus to eliminate this issue.
It's a nifty little lens that can capture some excellent quality images. For the price I can not complain about this lens besides the lack of a af to mf switch on it. Grab it and use the $ you saved to put towards another lens you need!
