Leica Q vs Nikon Z7 Comparison #thisorthat
DIY Life Tech
What's in the box
From the manufacturer
Absolute Immersive Masterpiece
The Z 7II builds upon the professional imaging capabilities of the Z mirrorless platform with more image quality, more dynamic range, more speed, more workflow enhancements…more of everything you want in an ultra-high performance camera.
-
Ultra-high resolution 45.7MP sensor.
The Z 7II uses Nikon's highest resolution backside illuminated CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter. When paired with NIKKOR Z lenses, the result is some of the most detailed images imaginable.
-
More processing power.
For the first time in a Nikon camera, the Z 7II is powered by not one, but two EXPEED 6 processing engines. They work together for faster image processing, more buffer capacity and more overall speed.
-
Brilliant dynamic range.
From deep blacks to bright whites and Nikon's superior color science, The Z 7II exhibits outstanding dynamic range in stills and videos, from ISO 64 to 25,600.
-
10 FPS with a buffer to keep up.
Catch decisive views of fast action with 10 frames per second continuous shooting and a buffer 3.3x the capacity of the Z 7—in RAW or JPEG at full resolution with AE/AF tracking.
-
The stability you need.
Powerful 5-axis VR image stabilization keeps your photos sharp and your videos steady—up to five stops in up to five directions (yaw, pitch, roll, X and Y). Handheld shooting made easy.
-
SnapBridge. Get connected.
Share photos on the spot. Quickly post a great shot to your feed. Remotely control the Z 7II. Upgrade your firmware. You’ll love the convenience of Nikon’s ever-evolving SnapBridge app.
Made for Z-Mount lenses.
Breakthroughs of the Z Mount, the largest full-frame lens mount of any system, have given way to some of the most advanced, optically pristine lenses ever—NIKKOR Z. The Z 7II is compatible with them all, each one delivering a new perspective and drawing peak performance from the camera.
-
More autofocus power.
The Z 7II builds on Nikon's flagship 493-point Hybrid AF system with improvements to low light performance, new options for Eye-Detection AF and easier selecting of AF modes.
-
Edge-to-edge coverage.
The AF system's 90% frame coverage lets you compose the way you want, from the start. Either manually choose one of 493 focus points across the frame, or let subject tracking do the work for you.
-
Eye-detection. Better than ever.
Nikon's intelligent Eye-Detection AF quickly identifies and locks onto eyes for properly focused portraits. Z 7II builds on the system with Wide-Area (L) Mode to set boundaries for eye detection.
-
See in the dark.
With a big leap forward in low-light autofocus performance, the Z 7II can find your subject in half the available light as its predecessor. Keep shooting into the evening with the same AF performance.

Generally Why Z7-line?
- A+ still image quality (I shoot RAW and edit in Photoshop)
- A+ ergonomics & best menus in business (not perfect, but pretty great)
- Assignable buttons = fantastic
- View finder and rear screen are A+
- Silent/stealth operation is perfect.
- Z lenses and N-Z adapter = phenomenal optics. Currently using all favorite Z, G, Zeiss, Sony E, Canon EOS, SIRUI anamorphic lenses no problem. Cannon lenses via slightly temperamental/flawed Techart EF>Z adapter (will not work in pure MF mode!).
Why to upgrade to Z7-II?
- Faster in-camera computing (2nd processor), generally snappier operation, faster, more accurate auto focus.
- Better video (up to 4k 60p 10 bit in cam)
- Slightly longer lasting batteries (but will NOT work with Z7-1 batteries), even though the new batts will charge in the old charger.
- 2 card slots - but not 2 slots of the same kind...a slightly annoying, but also interesting pair of XQD/CFEx & SD. So if using CFEx, second card will always be much slower...This design choice was a compromise...give new shooters option to run faster CFEx cards for high end video and raw bursts, retain XQD compatibility, provide SD option as primary or backup because it's smaller and fits. Future will be two CFEx/XQD slots or two of some new smaller version of the CFEx.
Negatives:
- Still no Z pancake 24mm 1.4 that would make this the ultimate "beyond film Leica M" stealth travel cam. BTW: the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Ultra-Compact is fantastic at 16mm...and no-brainer inexpensive...but only DX rez. If you need stealth, that is the way to get it currently. Just carry the Z 24mm 1.8 in your pocket/pack for high rez full frame shots.
- Wish all Z lenses had an assignable ring controller (like the kit 24-70) that can be mapped to F stop. F-stop control should ALWAYS be on the lens, PERIOD!!!
- Why are all the native Z lenses about the same length as the G's + FTZ adapter? Seems like there are actually ZERO native Z lenses yet. They should be 1" shorter.
This camera is highly advanced but can be used by newbies too.
My first “assignment” was family reunion photos-the most important photos! I am very pleased with the results. Looking forward to my next “assignment” of travel and nature photos of Southeast Asia.
Thanks, Nikon
