This is a great camera pack if you need to carry plenty of gear, have the ability to stay hydrated, and stay comfortable, well worth the price tag.
This is a quality backpack, thoughfully designed, and suitable for the serious photographer or seasoned traveler. Its thick and padded, and has beefy zippers with easy to pull long plastic tips, not just loops. There are pockets and compartments galore fort stashing phones and other small electronics, snacks, maps, notebooks, glasses, hat, first-aid kit, and so on---plus a zippered pouch for items such as memory cards, cords, microfiber cloths. A pair of outside pockets accommodate water bottles, and these can be closed up when not used. There are areas for a 16 inch or smaller laptop, another for a tablet, and a pair of straps that can be configured as an X via the 8 eyelets running up the front of the pack for external storage.
The camera compartment is a a separate bag that fits inside the whole pack. It has, by my count, 10 adjustable subcompartments (the wonders of Velcro are on display throughout this pack) for a camera, multiple lens, filters, flash, meters---and apparently a drone and no doubt more stuff than I know about. The camera bag can be used independent of the larger pack, and the larger pack also has an exterior pocket for holding a tripod.
Sans the camera bag, the Vanguard VEO Backpack can also double as a backpack. But access to the main cavity of this pack is from the back, not the front. This feature is to better secure valuable photographic and electronic gear, and it is not a drawback but a key difference from a typical hiking backpack.
I have not yet used this bag on a long excursion in the rain, so I cannot verify how well the pack cover and pack protect contents from inclement weather. I've found the pack comfortable and easy enough to adjust, though it takes me some time to get the straps just right, but, again, for disclosure I have yet to trek any long distance with a full load in this pack. My impression is that the padding and fit will suit me will for that purpose (FYI, I'm 6'1" tall). It feels comfortable around my shoulders and the bottom of the pack strikes me at the waist.
The pack comes with a small guide showing the features, but I had to also consult the photos here on Amazon for an intitial tutorial about how to use it. I wish Vanguard had actually provided more information about the pack in an bit more expanded owner's guide. Vanguard is a well-regarded manufacturer of camera bags, tripods, binoculars, and more, so this "Swiss Army Knife" of a backpack seems a logical outgrowth of that experience. It does cost a fair amount, so it is not a light consideration whether to spring for this pack or not. The smallest version is $100 less than this one, the Active 53, so that might be the way to go depending on your gear. But I would spring for the Active 53 otherwise as can accommodate a growing collection of photograpy gear.
I expect I'll be using mine for at least the next decade, likely longer. But there is one feature I have to call out as coming up short. The buckle of the right-side thin strap that hits about mid-back is supposed to also work as an emergency whistle. It's a cool idea, but I the feeble shrill whoshing sound emanating from this whistle is not going to do you much good. Better to get a real whistle!
What makes this bag so universal is its customizable parts. It comes with a seprate detachable camera case that can fit in the main compartment, detachable waist strap, extra camera storage pouch, extra "cup holder" like pouch, tons of extra detachable straps, & even more extra detachable straps for the front of the bag.
With all these straps this thing can carry bulky camping gear in addition to your camera gear. Thanks to the detachable camera case you can use the entire main compartment just to carry camping and travel gear or clothes alone. This turns this bag into a camping backpack. With the detachable waist strap you can then turn the bag into a hiking/climbing bag in case you need more support. This bag fills so many outdoor activities thanks to the customizable nature it is actually overwhelming at first impression!
The bag's exoskeleton is also well designed, having a metal bar integrated on the back inner edges of the bag and having a well shaped solid rectangular bottom means this thing will stand up straight when placed down easy, no tipping bags!
What about pockets? Too Many. 2 on each side, one with a possible usb A pass through for charging and another one for a umbrella or tri-pods, water bottle pouch, small expandable pouches on both side of the shoulder straps AND on the waist straps. One on the very back for sensitive items like passports/wallets, then one inside the top expandable compartment and some sleeves on the back for laptops/tablets. The back also contain a passthrough for sliding it onto a luggage handle.
The overall material of this bag feels sturdy and makes me confident it will last for a good time span, but only time will tell. The back padding and shoulder strap padding is beefy. When searching "Camera Backpack" on Amazon what a a lot of the top results lack is a good strap with good front and back padding. This bag made sure to add big amount of cushion and little dotted spots to make the bag breathable while wearing for a extended amount of time.
What might be the downside of this bag? It is absolutely huge. At 5'7" this bag looks absolutely massive. It would not look like a camera bag on initial impression until I pull out the camera bag.
How does this perform as a camera bag? Unlike other camera bags that makes it a feature to be able to "quick draw" your camera accessories. What this bag does is make it customizable and add a lot of convenient pockets and straps so that you can turn it into a quick draw bag. The pouches in the chest and waist straps are shrunken via velcro when not in use but can be expanded enough to hold lens, and the additional zipper pouch can be used to house memory cards. Then the bag side can be used to quick draw a tripod, and since this bag has so many straps to hook things you can use those to attach your quick draw accessories via clips.
All in all, at $300 during time of review this is a very expensive bag. But I can easily recommend this even for this price if you need a mid-large bag that can do it all: Hold Camera accessories, travel, hiking, camping, school, extreme weather sports, just anything. It's insane this thing is just considered a "Camera backpack" because it can do it all and the build quality of this thing has just felt insanely well. I'll be keeping an eye on the brand Vanguard. They are definitely making some kick-a$$ products over there. If this bag ever goes on sale for around $100-130 it would be an absolute steal.

One little odd thing is how the large rectangular camera compartment comes out. It either comes out the front in a half open zipper or out the back in a just big enough opening. The rectangular box does not have much on the outside to grab ahold of just a small handle on the top part. Basically it is a bit of a hassle to get it out or put it back in.
