These are the binoculars I wish I had when I was in my 20’s …
Hi. My family has been using these compact Nikon binoculars to quickly get a closer look at the creatures that enter our backyard from the woods beyond. These are the glasses that are always out on our kitchen counter for “grab ‘em quick” access. We always leave the eyepiece caps/covers in place when the glasses are parked because they are easy to remove quickly (with the flick of a thumbnail to the centerpiece “squiggly” connector). I tell you this because it speaks to the overall quality of these binoculars and their ability to be handled frequent by many hands / multiple people. The rubber armor has a slightly nappy, texturized, surface that helps to make it secure to grasp and slip free. And when, and where, it counts, the armor is very effective at shrugging off frequent “pick them up and put them down” contact on hard (countertop) surfaces. It works well …I find that the ergonomics of these Prostaff are fine for their price point. They fit comfortably “in hand” and are easy to adjust for different users. The (right eye) diopter, while slightly stiff to rotate, is aided by thumbnail friendly raised ridges on the adjustment ring. The eyepieces optics are wide at 22mm (my measurement) and provide a widescreen, relaxing, view. In total, the view they provide is both sharp and crisp and the optics’ color rendition is quite good for these Nikon’s modest cost. The takeaway: As mentioned in my title, these are the glasses that I wish that I had in my early twenties when I spent a good amount of time with friends hiking, and camping, in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire. These ruggedized, compact, binoculars would have made a home in a “quick access” side pocket on my pack. And, I’m confident, they would have survived their adventures. I feel that these Nikons provide a lot of value for their price and that they would … will … make a excellent gift that will be used for many years.

Reviewed in Canada on August 17, 2023
This review is intended for a bino noob like myself, to share some of my learnings, while I looked for a pair that was travel-friendly; light, good optics, waterproof, and rugged. I also wanted a brand that will be around for product support if needed. I’m not a pro and know very little about these instruments, so the criteria mentioned was a baseline, and good clarity and ease of use was an absolute requirement. Picking the Nikon PROSTAFF P3 8x30 ended up being a leap of faith. The reviews from others on Amazon helped. I had short-listed the Bushnell Prime 8x32 with similar specs but I couldn't justify the higher price.

I did learn through research that going with 8 times magnification is the sweet spot for hand-held viewing as the image will be relatively steady versus 10-12 times mag, and an objective lens size of 30mm will give you a decent field of view and relatively good brightness versus a 25mm. While a larger lens (40mm and above) will result in a better image it will also add to the overall size and weight which is why I got the 30mm for travel.

On receiving the product, I can say that it physically met the criteria that I had set. Image quality is great and I’m happy with my purchase. Someone did mention that you will need a good lens cap management system as they are easy to misplace. I personally like that they are not attached, so nothing dangling. I would just remove them and keep aside until I’m done for the day, versus trying to put them back at each interval. This will also not fit in your pocket, and it's more of a mid-size bino.

I got this on sale at 20% off which was an added incentive, in addition to checking all the boxes for me. I’ve added some pictures as that is one thing I prefer when I read reviews. I’m taking this on a safari in a month, and I’ll add to this review, IF there is anything new that unravels.
