Yes, it is expensive for what it is. But if you need a CF Express Type-A SD Card reader, you already know the name of the game in terms of price anyway. You absolutely get what you pay for with Sony, at least certainly with their Tough series, including this reader itself. Has nice little 5mm-long rubber feet on each corner to hold it in place on your desk (or PC tower in my case). Transfers VERY quickly. Has a blue light to denote process.

Does a device like this need to be this reliable and well built? Well....depending on your workflow, then yes.

This device is built to be thrown in a camera bag and improve workflow when switching out cards and doing editing out in the field.

And "out in the field" could be a full day of shooting (for fun or work), a full weekend vacation or a week long location shoot.

It's overkill at home, but for working out in the field, it's hard to beat

Recently acquired a sony a7r v. Been thinking of migrating to CFexpress A cards but the price is too high right now so sticking with the SD cards I already have (300mbps rate) for now, but wanted a reader that's future proofed for me.

Image file size is 121mb, each, uncompressed raw! Yikes!

My original reader is an insignia I bought like 3 years ago. Wanted a new one for a project where the client would like on site image file transfer/delivery. Time is of the essence.

On (z690 motherboard) desktop pc:
Best buy's insignia reader (discontinued) transfer clocks in at about 41mbps. Took 15 mins to transfer 30gb. Sony's clocks in at 121mbps. Took about 5mins to transfer 30gb. Nice!

On my laptop:
Insignia reader craps out and fails to read entirely. Sony transfer rate comes in at about 245mbs! Took 2 mins to transfer 30gb!

The reader is solid built, never got warm and is a nice svelt size that's easy to carry around. It cost a lot but I couldn't be happier with this reader from Sony!

If you recently upgraded a camera that uses CF Express A SD cards, this is the reader you need. The speeds of this are ridiculous. It takes less than a minute to import thousands of photos into lightroom and is certainly much faster for non CF Express A cards too. As much as I was hesitant spending this much money on a reader, it ended up being well worth it.

The entire body of this is made of metal. It dissipates heat incredibly well as a result. It is expensive but it is a very premium, quality product and to me is worth the extra price. It has four small rubber feet on the bottom to prevent slippage.

It does get warm (but not hot), when in use. When simply plugged-into the computer without a memory card inserted, it does not heat up at all.

Tested and works perfectly with Sony CFExpress A Tough and ProGrade CFExpress A cards. Comes with a 1 foot usb-c to usb-c cord as well as a 1 foot usb-a to usb-c cord.

The usb-c cable provided was faulty and was causing slow read times at first. I thought it was the reader but after changing to another usb-c cable it worked flawlessly.
