From the manufacturer
Easy to carry. Fun to shoot.
Wide enough for street photography, landscapes and interiors, tight enough for portraits and candid shots, this is an ultra-compact lens all about versatility. Its fast f/2 maximum aperture creates dramatic depth and is great for low light, and, like all Z lenses, its image quality is outstanding.
Great on any Z camera.
Sitting between two prized focal lengths, 35mm and 50mm, this lens takes strong points from each. It captures natural-looking portraits and close-ups like a 50mm, but it's wide enough for shooting indoors, on the street or in a crowd like a 35mm.
Nothing weighing you down.
The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is so compact and lightweight—just 1.8 inches long and weighing 6 oz—you'll forget it's even there. It doesn't extend or retract, so it's always ready. Take it wherever you go as your main walk-around lens or as a lightweight second lens.
-
Dramatic Depth.
Make your subject stand out against a softly blurred background.
-
Get in close.
The beautiful bokeh is accentuated at close distances, for almost three-dimensional separation.
-
Shoot after hours.
Capture the mood of dimly lit situations with clarity and sharpness.
Video savvy.
The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2's quiet autofocus system greatly suppresses focus breathing to prevent angle-of-view shifts during recording. Make smooth iris adjustments with the click-less control ring to create a natural shift in brightness.
Fast, confident focus.
When it comes to autofocus, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is the strong, silent type. A new high-torque stepping motor operates at blazing fast speeds in near silence, whether using Eye-Detection AF or continuous subject tracking.
Customizable control.
The smooth click-less control ring can be customized for the way you shoot. Use it for precise manual focusing or to adjust aperture, ISO or exposure compensation.
Dust and drip resistant.
Extensively sealed to keep dust and moisture out, including around all moving parts of the lens.
* The lens is not guaranteed to be dust- and drip-resistant in all situations and under all conditions.

I think this makes an excellent walk-around lens, and makes carrying a Z body more fun and laid-back feeling compared to the larger, heavier, more serious and professional S-line lenses (which are great for when you want perfect, pixel-peeping sharpness, better bokeh and very little coma or CA, etc.). This lens holds its own however. The main thing you have to work around in order to get the most out of this little gem is to avoid taking close-up shots with the aperture wide-open, as you will find the result soft, murky and cloudy. If your subject is five feet or less away, stop down to f5.6 to f8.0 (its sweet spot) and your subject will be very satisfyingly sharp and the depth of field still very effective. Save f2 for when your subject is far away enough, preferably using f2.8 if you can for more sharpness.
