Editorial Reviews
Live At The L.A. Forum presents an extraordinary April 1969 performance by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Before a raucous, sold-out house, Hendrix, drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding tore through a unique set featuring highlights such as "I Don't Live Today," "Purple Haze," "Red House,"and an astonishing medley of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love". This pristine recording, newly mixed by Hendrix's longtime engineer Eddie Kramer, captures the original Jimi Hendrix Experience in their unrivaled, peak form. A portion of this performance was previously included as part of a short-lived Westwood One radio documentary box set [Lifelines 1990-1992] but has been unavailable in any form for two decades. The CD release with a 24 page booklet--complete with liner notes from ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons who witnessed the show first hand--gives this seminal performance its proper platform, presenting the complete performance mixed directly from the original eight-track master tapes.

This is a great example of the Jimi Hendrix Experience from '69. Some of this has been released many years ago, and has been around in bootleg form, but this is the first official release of this show. Over 79 + minutes the band runs through songs like "Tax Free" (at 15 + minutes long), "Foxey Lady", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Purple Haze", (still great to hear in this live version), a lengthy "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)>Sunshine Of Your Love>Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", (which is simply incredible to hear again live--Hendrix is on fire during "Sunshine..."), and does a version of the "Star Spangled Banner", and a few other tunes. Also here is "Red House", (at 10 + minutes) where Hendrix really gets off some rapid playing--throwing notes out with seeming abandon--always a favorite of Hendrix and fans of the band. This set shows Hendrix wasn't just interested in playing "the hits" or the current album, but seemed more about what he wanted to play that night.
The sound is very good/excellent, sounding fairly open and clean (even when Hendrix plays some feedback) thanks to Eddie Kramer's mixing talents. The 23 page booklet has an informative essay by ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons on what it was like to hear Hendrix, even after playing with him in Gibbons' the Moving Sidewalks in '68. There's a longer essay by Randy Lewis on the music and the way life was back in those days for context. Also here are period photos of Hendrix on stage and a couple of color photos of the band in action,, plus there's a page of recording information.
The disc snaps into a tray inside the two panel cardboard package which has a color photo of the band on stage across both inside panels. If you don't own this music already and are a fan of live Hendrix, get this. The sound alone makes this a worthwhile purchase, and the band is really on top of things musically. I heard the Experience live in my hometown at the S.D. Sports Arena, and it still stands as one of the most awesome, overpowering live shows I've ever heard, along with (in later years) Miles Davis (electric), The Who, The Dead, and a couple of other shows. This set brings back all those memories of sitting there and being blown back by the music from this trio.
