Start playing immediately with traditional sax fingering and a responsive breath sensorYou’ve worked hard to nail your sax technique, but most digital horns make you master a new fingering system. With the Roland Aerophone AE-10, it’s a smooth transition, thanks to a layout that’s similar to your favorite acoustic sax—right down to the left-hand octave key. Plus, the AE-10 has a sensitive mouthpiece-mounted breath sensor that also functions as a bite sensor, allowing expressive techniques like vibrato and pitch. Even beginners will enjoy playing the various onboard sounds straight away. The AE-10 is also packed with a selection of the latest synth sounds that are specially tailored for wind instrument performance with fully optimized breath control. |
Soprano, alto, tenor, baritone sax sounds: all from one instrumentNothing beats the sound of your favorite acoustic sax, but sometimes its tone might not be quite right for the job at hand. Whatever scenario you’re playing in, the Aerophone AE-10 has the onboard digital sax sounds you need. Choose from alto, tenor, soprano, and baritone sax types, all of which respond just like their acoustic counterparts. Playing dynamics, articulation, and even the organic overtone changes caused by your breathing are all reproduced thanks to Roland’s advanced SuperNATURAL modeling technology. A dedicated “Sax Section” layers four types of sax for playing together in unison, and the Full Range feature automatically switches between sax types by key range. |
Explore other instruments including trumpet, tuba, violin and moreThe Aerophone AE-10 also features sounds from other wind instruments including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, and more. Roland’s SuperNATURAL technology faithfully matches the behavior of the originals to expand your musical range. Ethnic instruments like shakuhachi and erhu are on hand, too. Aerophone AE-10 even includes stringed instruments, such as violin, cello, and contrabass, capable of unique musical expressions since you control them by breath and fingering instead of bowing. Once you’ve tried the individual sounds, you can create one-man ensembles by layering multiple wind instrument sounds with the Brass Section setting. |
Play anytime and anywhere with onboard speakers, battery power, and headphonesWherever and whenever you play, the portable and lightweight Roland Aerophone AE-10 is ready. Six AA batteries provide mobile power, and onboard monitor speakers deliver comfortable sound for intimate performing situations. You also have the ability to directly connect to a PA or amp for broader coverage, eliminating the need to use a mic. Playing sessions are even more fun when you connect to your smartphone via the Aerophone AE-10’s stereo mini jack and jam along with favorite songs. And thanks to the headphones option, you can play around the clock without disturbing family members and neighbors. |

So, in some ways I want to rate this HIGHER than before, but in other ways I want to rate it lower.
FIRST, this is an absolutely amazing piece of equipment. If I had one of these when I was young, I would have been a much better player. It makes practicing fun and easy. It is simply astonishing - AND so EASY to just pick up and play.
It sounds amazing and makes you feel like a much better player than you are, all while MAKING you a better player!
So what is the downside??? Two things...
They came out with the AE-20 in Jan of 2022 - just after Christmas and what a bummer, cause that is what I would have gotten - but such is life.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, the instrument is buggy. SOMETIMES the lower octave key will do what it is supposed to do, and sometimes it does something totally different. I have done a factory reset and everything I can think of - it just works sometimes and doesn't other times.
Everything I have read says that service from Roland is sketchy, but I am going to try. I'd love to pay them a price difference and upgrade to the AE-20.
ONE LAST THING, I don't know how the AE-20 is, but the AE-10 has a pretty awful menu system. Think OLD SCHOOL with a digital calculator screen and scrolling through a ton of choices. Better yet, imagine how a lot of computer monitors work - or don't work very well - having you dig through menu after menu to find what you want or need. It is 2022 and time for a good menu / screen for a $1,000 device.
ALL THAT SAID, it is still amazing and you should still get one.

I got this for my daughter who plays sax and wants to learn clarinet. She wasn't sure what to think at first, but we are being WOWED again and again with this super neat piece of technology.
It is lightweight and at first glance it looks a little like a toy, but it is NOT.
It is FAIRLY easy to understand how to program and operate, and just picking it up and playing sax on it is SIMPLE. I wish it came with more reeds - the default is HARD but it works pretty well. Not sure how to get more.
The sound quality is astonishing and it sounds and feels like a sax. If you know how to play Alto Saxophone then you know how to play over a hundred instruments the moment you pick up the Roland AE-10G Aerophone Digital Wind Instrument.
You play to the fingerings of an Eb Alto Sax and whatever instrument you choose is what you get. I found the brass section to be a little off - at least in the built in speaker. But most of the woodwinds are spot on and it is just WOW WOW WOW!!!
We are thinking of upgrading to the next model, this is so good and amazing.
The ONLY negatives, it seems to eat batteries (6 x AA) but you can plug it in to the wall via a wall-wart - included. The speaker is a bit anemic and weak sounding, but you can easily plug it into an amp. We've had a problem with it cutting off while playing. We THINK it was just a battery issue, but we are hoping we didn't get a glitchy electronic connection somewhere.
OVERALL, get one of these if you have any serious interest in playing a woodwind instrument. It sounds so real, plays so realistically and it WOW but ALSO really USEFUL.
Highly recommend this. I purchased this at full price as a Christmas gift for my daughter and I am not biased in ANY way. It is just plain awesome!
I hope you found my review helpful. Thank you!
Pros: great sounds from several instruments, lightweight, very ergonomic for sax players.
Cons: octave key would jump by itself sometimes (not trying to play overtones), totally charged Ni-MH batteries would not power AE10G enough without plugging adapter in first. After playing plugged in for a few minutes the batteries would operate fine and erratic sounds would smooth out.
Was a toss up to return but decided to use funds to upgrade to a new tenor.
