Product Description
Product Description
The updated version of the C1000 S multipurpose small-diaphragm condenser microphone is extremely popular for its versatility. It is suitable for recording and live-sound applications as well as for ENG/EFP and video productions. Its gold sputtered capsule housing makes the microphone extremely rugged against humidity. If no phantom power is available, the C1000 S can be powered by two standard AA batteries for up to 120 hours. More versatile than ever before, the new C1000 S features a bass-cut switch and a switchable -10 dB pad. The polar pattern can quickly be switched from cardioid to hyper-cardioid. Three different frequency settings are adding more clarity to speech and instrument sounds.

What customers say about C 1000 S:
"The versatility of the C 1000 S makes this an extremely popular model, and one ideally suited for all kinds of recording and live sound applications."
"It is perfectly adequate for a number of applications including drum overheads, acoustic instruments, piano etc."
"It is also indestructible with rugged metal chassis and special mic clip to keep it securely attached..."
Highlights
The nearly indestructible condenser has a sturdy metal chassis and specialized mic clip to keep the units securely attached to stands. The C1000 S's gold capsule and XLR plugs make it humidity-proof for all environments.
Rather than relying on an expensive 9V block battery, the C1000 S now runs on two AA batteries at 120h and offers two gain settings, three frequency settings and two polar patterns: cardioid and hypercardioid.
For mobile broadcast use and interview situations, our new C1000 S offers more versatility than ever before.

After setting up and sending feeds to my sound guy he took one trip out front while I gave an initial sound check and came back onstage with eyes open and a grin on his face saying "man, I love those mics you got, they sound great out there." In fairness it should be noted that prior to getting these "middle of the road" mics (according to AKG promotional materials), I had been using a cheap pencil condenser from Shure that required a battery. So 'one mans' floor is another's ceiling' perhaps but regardless, they sound great to us and I am happy with how I sound. I also like the flexibility of these mics to use phantom power when available or batteries when not. They have additional adjustments to the sound based on the use and desired effect which I haven't even experimented with yet. I can't speak to longevity or durability because I have used them just once but I chose this model partly because of its reported toughness for travel and live use and its affordability. Hopefully they last a long time but if not at least I am not out a fortune. I was NOT compensated for this review and I hope it helps someone make a decision.
Also, we have found the presence boost adapter (for increasing the intelligibility of speech a real advantage.
So here we have a mic that AKG themselves do not specifically recommend for voiceover work coming with the gubbins to make that happen and happen well.
There is also an adaptor to adjust the pickup patter to hyper cardioid which would be great where feedback was an issue. I don't know what the other reviewer was doing when he/she said they had problems with feedback, because this mic is perfectly designed to deal with that.
And apart from everything else, it just looks good. Nicely shaped foam pop/wind filter.
The shape of the microphone barrel is unusual. It's quite large and flat on one side where the switch is located. I find the switch to be somewhat noisy and I don't recommend using it -- I believe it's simply a means of turning off the internal battery power when not needed, but it will mute the mic even on phantom power. But there'll be a very rude click.
The construction of the capsule and shock mount is extremely good. To access it, you screw off the entire front half of the microphone casing. This allows use of the two included adaptors, which are billed as a pattern modifier and a proximity effect modifier. They slip over the capsule assembly. I haven't needed these. The high-pass and pad switches also are internal and must be accessed this way. This is also how the batteries (two AAs) are inserted.
My tests seem to show that this is a very well-balanced small-capsule cardioid. It has a pronounced proximity effect, as one would expect, but the resulting low-frequency boost is smooth and clean. Worked closely with voice, the sound is surprisingly similar to that of an SM-7 dynamic mic. At greater distances, the entire spectrum is well balanced and the mic is quite sensitive, requiring very little preamp gain and exhibiting no perceptible noise. As an instrument microphone, particularly for stringed acoustic instruments, I think this mic will really excel.
The mic does not ship with a case. Instead it comes with the fairly common zipper bag with little or no padding. The mic, clip, adapters and windscreen barely fit into this bag, and if I were carrying it anywhere, that would make me extremely nervous. If you're using this anywhere but in a studio, I'd recommend investing in a padded hard plastic case. This isn't a particularly expensive mic, but it's worth protecting. The lack of a case is the reason this isn't a 5-star review.
