It arrived in a double carton in perfect order and was packed with a user manual, corded microphone, and an IEC A/C cord for using the speaker on mains power and also to charge its' internal battery. I took a very close look at the build quality....Excellent! The body is very thick ABS high-impact plastic. The grill is steel and the amp chassis is also heavy steel, with the battery compartment behind a user-friendly removable panel, should the battery need replacement in the future. (Search Amazon.....I found a 2-Pack of the replacement batteries on Amazon for only $27...and Free Shipping!!)
The included microphone has the build quality of a "toy" but you could let the kids play with it and not worry...LOL
Anxious to hear it, I turned all the input knobs and Main Level control to zero and pressed the power button. I was happy to see that the internal battery showed a 75% charge! I connected an RCA adaptor into my CD player headphone output and raised the channel level to the midway position, then slowly brought up the Main Level to a modestly loud volume. I was pleased with the sound even keeping the Bass and Treble controls in the "noon" position. The sound is well balanced with lots of great, articulate high end. As with any new speaker, I put on a playlist and left it to play even while I left my shop. This give a woofer some "break-in" time and you will notice more bass as the speaker is sufficiently left to play at moderate levels, faced down on a sofa for 10 or so hours. This also gave me a chance to monitor the battery life.....Outstanding!!! Even playing for 10 hours at moderate levels, the battery indicator never went below 50%. I'm sure if you use this device at full volume the battery life will likely be lower but I was really pleasantly surprised by the battery performance!
Getting ready for the wedding job, I took the Behringer Europort MPABT40-PRO to visit the site about a week prior to the ceremony. The retractable luggage style handle made it easy to get down the long boardwalk to the sand!! At around 20lbs, it's not too bad to carry either.
The event was to take place under an arbor with seating for about 80 guests. I placed the Behringer Europort MPABT40-PRO on a speaker stand discreetly to the left of where the vows where to be exchanged. I raised to stand quite high to reach the back row, while not compromising the closest seats.
Using some requested walk-in tracks, the speaker performed extremely well and smiles were on the faces of my client...YES!!!! The real test was to hear voices through the speaker. Since there is no mains power at this location for any of my wireless microphone gear, we agreed to use two wired handheld microphones; one for the officiant and one for the 'soon to be' newlyweds. I used two ElectoVoice ND767 dynamic mics and dialed in the levels sufficient to be heard by all....The vocal articulation and intelligibility were outstanding! I walked the entire area and was very pleased with the coverage. Both the side to side horizontal and throw distance are very respectable for a cabinet this compact.
By the way, I also paired the Behringer Europort MPABT40-PRO to my iPad using the incorporated Bluetooth receiver and this worked GREAT!
I wouldn't normally trust a wireless connection for music cues but it performed so well that I did indeed use if for the ceremony! This made it easy to adjust the playback volume of their music tracks directly from my iPad in the front left row!
The day of the event went as smoothly as the rehearsal and the little Behringer Europort MPABT40-PRO became one of my new "best friends!" At 40watts of power, you've got plenty for an intimate situation like mine where "concert sound" is not appropriate or practical.
I have very little to say in the "negative" column but this: I wish Behringer would have included a "Line Out" jack to accommodate daisy-chaining to another speaker. It would be great to have a "master/slave" option such as this would provide. You could use a "Y" adaptor in some situations.
The other caveat is that there are no built-in effects (Reverb) or an Effects Loop to add your own. While the Behringer Europort MPABT40-PRO does have a USB dongle receiver to use their proprietary wireless mics (I have not reviewed), any singer using this speaker will be scrambling to figure out how to add some reverb to their vocal performance. Believe me...., dry vocals are typically pretty poor sounding.
I can work around this drawback because I do have a battery powered Behringer mixer with an Effects Loop (yes, you can throw a guitar reverb pedal through it and run your vocal through the loop bus) It would have been great to have a reverb dial for the two mic inputs right on the Behringer Europort MPABT40-PRO, but I realize at this low price point that would not be feasible.
Overall, I commend Behringer on the design and implementation of this product. I used it again at a band gig as a delay speaker, dialing in the accurate time-delay on my Behringer SHARK and 'sling-shotting' the output backwards through my wireless in-ear system!! The Behringer Europort MPABT40-PRO was in an alcove 60 feet away without any wires going to it!!!
Yes...a bit "MacGyver" of me...I do things "out of the box" sometimes :)
I will surely get a TON of use out of this product! I use it on my downtime at tailgates and wheel it around the house as a "Super Bluetooth Box!"
This product will serve you well in both pro and home uses! Games, tailgates, karaoke, poolside, or beach? Great to have up to 12hrs on battery!
Those people who still think "Behringer" gear is not quality, think again. While not too long ago they did have failure issues but since broadening their acquisitions to include MIDAS, Klark-Technic and TURBOSOUND, this company is producing very high quality, highly engineered products!!
I use the Behringer X-32 Digital Console on a majority of my larger gigs and it is a fantastic piece of PRO AUDIO gear!! AND AFFORDABLE TO THE 'LITTLE GUYS' :)
Way to to go Behringer and Music Group!!
Only recommendation is dual USB ports... One 5v with higher amp output...one normal for phone.
This way you can power wireless audio transmitter directly. I don't use Bluetooth because I use them in stereo with a mixer. Fm is much more stable
But all around great product. Save your money and skip the Bose and JVC units. Sound is almost identical.
The first and most noticeable thing is that the telescoping handle is both loose and also hard to work. There's a release button, but pressing it does not mean that the handle is just going to pop out when you pull it. You have to fuss with it a little to get it telescoped, and then it's a little loose in its track. No big deal, but noticeable. When the handle is stowed you can't really see it from the front. The wheels are rubber, which is cool, but they are pretty small and you'd really only be able to roll it on concrete or something very smooth. At 18 pounds I find it easier just to pick it up and carry it. It's smaller than your average PA speaker, but not as small as a typical bluetooth speaker like for your phone. Really, it's a middling sort of size that's unusual and one of the biggest selling points. It combines easy portability with musician-grade amplifier power. The semi-ruggedized case and smooth curves are attractive qualities as well.
I connected it to the wall and turned on. My first impressions of the sound quality were good. It has a surprising amount of mid-bass for a little 8" speaker. At first I was tempted to try and add more bass with the 2-band equalizer, but I quickly found that this only hurt and did not help the overall sound. With the EQ set dead center the speaker is both clear and punchy. It lacks any sense of a sub-low bass sound like you'd have with a subwoofer, but the bass it does put out is pleasing to listen to and seems well-balanced to the silk dome tweeter. And that tweeter is no slouch - it sounds detailed and crisp without being tinny or harsh like some other Behringer speakers i have owned. It has a pretty generous amount of power in the amp section. Maybe 40 watts doesn't sound like much, but you would probably be surprised what you get for that juice. It's not a replacement for a 500W PA but it's a heck of a lot better than any portable bluetooth speaker that I've seen yet. And that low power is good for something too - a long battery life. I had no trouble running the speaker a reasonably loud volume all day and night - more than 8 hours before i plugged it in. The box says it gets 12 hours, if you keep the volume low that is probably conservative. I like that the battery is a common sealed lead acid type and replacement should be easy when the time comes.
The included microphone is pointless to me as I already own better microphones. I would like to have not paid for it. I also have no use for a USB port that accepts only a proprietary Berhinger wireless mic adapter. I'm wondering now if I could even power something from that port, I will have to try that and report back.
The fact that it has left and right RCA inputs is good, the fact that it lacks RCA output is regrettable. That would have been an easy way to chain two of these together, and it would probably only added a little to the cost. The mic preamps seem reasonably quiet. If you only need 2 channels plus the aux or bluetooth input then it comes with all the mixer you need. The bluetooth functionality was perfect, with the speaker automatically establishing the bluetooth connection in just a few seconds after being powered on. It would be great if you could pair two speakers with one bluetooth source, but alas that will not work here. The EQ does not seem to be very useful, with the boost turning everything into mud and the cut not really helping the clarity much. I'll just leave it on 0 and use a more sophisticated EQ on my sound source. I particularly liked the way this speaker sounded using the "RnB" EQ setting on my iPad. It boosted the low bass and cut the mid in a way that was very pleasing to my ear, and made it easy to listen and dance to for hours on end.
We took it out to the ocean to test the output in a real-world scenario, and it did pretty well. It went up onto a speaker stand with no wibbly wobbly. The power was enough to project loud music for 10-20 feet and was still clearly audible much further than that, even with a lot of wind and the sound of the waves. I did wish it a had a little more power in that scenario, but that was a pretty harsh test. Indoors or in a quiet environment you will have plenty of power to rock everyone in the immediate vicinity.
After listening to it every day for a week I have to say I'm pretty impressed, where I didn't expect that much to begin with. It's not super-loud, it's not for audiophiles, it's not all things to all people. But it is a darn good speaker for the working musician with a bad back and no electricity on tap! I wouldn't be surprised if I wound up buying a second one to have a matched pair and just a tad more power while still maintaining battery powered operations.
5: Very well made product. Stylish and not too large.
4: Pro version has a handle and wheels, makes it super easy to transport.
3: Bluetooth operation is excellent and almost instantaneous. I've never had a problem wirelessly connecting my phone to stream Spotify, and instances where there was a problem, it's always with the venue's wifi/bluetooth, never the Behringer.
2: Battery is incredible. Charge it once and it pretty much goes all day with no problems
1: Sound is great. Make sure you tweak the controls in the back to get the best sound. It has bass and treble controls.
My one wish? I wish it had a speaker phone option. I would love to have calls coming in to my phone be able to beam over the Behringer, but I have not found a way to do that. Since I bought this unit, I have become the man at all my family gatherings. Connect a microphone, stream your music and you have instant karaoke or dance party. Excellent investment!
