To put my review in context, I bought this mouse as an inexpensive but acceptable replacement while my Cyborg R.A.T. 5 was being repaired by MadCatz, so it's possible I'm exaggerating its good qualities because they exceeded my expectations. In either case, this really is a great mouse for gaming, especially at the price point.
I have average-sized hands and use a palm grip, so I can't speak to the fit for people with larger or smaller hands or people who use a claw grip, but the Logitech G400's shape (unchanged, I've read, from the MX518 and virtually identical to the G5 I borrowed from a friend) is brilliantly comfortable. The thumb buttons are perfectly placed for any application. When browsing, I can strike the forward or backward buttons with the point of my thumb easily. When gaming, I tend to lay my thumb across both buttons and roll forward and back to actuate them. Both approaches work perfectly with this very functional mouse. The DPI-switching buttons are not as well placed and probably my biggest complaint. Of the three buttons that adjust DPI by default (increase DPI ahead of the scroll wheel, decrease DPI behind it, and revert to default DPI behind that), only the decrease DPI button is easily accessible without shifting the position of my palm. It's a very minor complaint and dopesn't add up to even a single lost star for its rating.
The build quality is excellent. When I first plugged it into my computer, the thin, plastic cord and light weight had me worried, but after many hours of use (and close examination of the construction) I can safely say that the build quality is top-notch. Other reviewers have called this mouse "cheap-feeling", but I think they are only responding to its light weight. If you don't mind lighter mice (or prefer them, like me) you will not be disappointed by this one. When I first started using the mouse, I was a bit disappointed that it did not have the molded-rubber, seemingly indestructible thumb buttons of the G5, even though it has an identically shaped body. But the solid "click" of the G400's thumb buttons has grown on me, and I am confident that if it does have technical issues at some point, it won't be the issue I had with my R.A.T. 5 (the "Forward" thumb button broke off--cheap, rigid plastic that it was). On that note, the plastic used to make this mouse feels like the good kind: strong, flexible, dense, with a matte finish. There is probably a lot of empty space inside the mouse (the body of it is pretty big and round) but it doesn't rattle at all.
The mouse wheel action isn't perfect. Like a lot of gamers, I prefer the mouse wheel to feel very clicky and digital. This mouse strikes a good balance between the different approaches, favoring the clicky feel over smooth scrolling. I considered getting a G500, but decided against it when I borrowed one from a friend and found the mouse wheel far too loose and mushy, even when the clicky mode was active. This mouse's wheel action could be firmer, but hasn't presented any problems for me. It is no less "digital-feeling" than my R.A.T. 5.
The software is acceptable. I almost considered giving the mouse a 4-star rating to reflect the okay-but-not-great-ness of the Logitech software. The software seems centered on the notion of creating an automatically activated profile for each game, a frightening prospect to me. I did NOT want to create a custom profile for every single game I play. After an evening of messing around with the software, I settled on two profiles: a default profile that remaps the DPI Up and DPI Down buttons to the Up and Down cursor keys, and a web browsing profile that kicks in when Chrome or Firefox capture the mouse input, to switch tabs with the DPI Up or Down buttons. In both profiles, the Default DPI button is mapped to cycle the DPI settings. I love having the extra buttons (even if they aren't perfectly placed like the thumb buttons), but I don't see why Logitech had three buttons set by default to a task that can easily be achieved with one button: why do I need buttons to increase, decrease and revert DPI when I could just use one button to switch DPI and free up the other two? The Logitech software allows you to remap those buttons and also allows you to not only set the DPI increments, but also how many increments of DPI are assigned to the mouse. This is a very useful function for me; I have a default browsing/desktop DPI level (900 DPI), a maxed-out FPS setting (3600 DPI), and a medium DPI setting I use for strategy games and stealthy games like Deus Ex (2000 DPI). Being able to cycle through them quickly with a single button is perfect for me. By default, the mouse has a fourth increment (1200 DPI, I think) that I found useless for any task. Thankfully, the software allowed me to set only the DPI increments I wanted.
It started as a temporary replacement while my R.A.T. 5 was out for repairs, but I honestly don't know what I'll do with the Cyborg when I get it back; I'll be using this G400. The only feature of the R.A.T. 5 I will miss is the thumb-accessible horizintal scroll wheel. Overall, this is an absolutely perfect no-frills gaming mouse. It is sensitive and responsive (3600 DPI max, easily sufficient for gaming), has all the buttons you need plus as many as three extra reprogrammable buttons, fits a palm grip perfectly and easily survives the intensity of any game. The no-frills aspect is a positive: there is very little that can go wrong or physically break with this mouse. If you're not sure what kind of gaming mouse you want (maybe your first non-standard mouse) then try this one; you won't be disappointed or ripped off. If you've tried (and exhausted) more elite gamer-centric mice and found their quality lacking, features unuseful, or price too high, try this excellent mouse.
The general design and shape of this mouse is clearly ergonomic. It fits my hand well and is clearly meant for a 'palm grip' style of mousing.
The buttons - all of the regular use ones at least - are great. The left/right click are solid, yet easy to push. You know when you've clicked, it isn't mushy but it doesn't fight you either. The 2 side buttons are great and placed perfectly. I didn't think I'd like having a smaller forward side button, but it works just well in daily use. The finish/feel is great - not too chintzy but also isn't like gripping leather (some 'premium' mice have that feel to me). Also, the weight of the mouse in general is great. I hate heavy ones and this is a pretty light beast.
Scroll Wheel - Technically also a button but deserves its own part. I love the scroll wheel on this thing probably the most of any other single thing. It's fast, you know each 'click' as you scroll through. It doesn't have the stupid side to side scrolling that I've never found a use for except to annoy the user. The middle clicking you do with the wheel is also perfect like the regular buttons. It's firm, yet smooth. You also know you've pushed it unlike many cheap mice you use at the office.
The sensor is great and deadly accurate. No stutters or any other BS. Optical is the way to go - any laser mouse I've ever used is on hyper mode (even with the correct software settings). You can't use optical on as many surfaces as laser - but as a desktop mouse I don't see how that'd ever be a problem anyway. I also keep mine set at the default DPI of 800. This works well, especially with acceleration off (which any person should do - who wants an inaccurate pointer?)
My two complaints about this mouse, if you can call them that. The first are the 3 buttons dedicated to DPI switching by default with no additional software. It's fine I guess but I've never had this before and don't see a use for it. I've even used some of the 'ricer' Razer gaming mice and the ones I've used didn't have DPI switching. My old, legendary Intellimouse 3.0 didn't have this - never needed the feature and that's back when I used to do heavy MMO and FPS gaming. The second that is more annoying/shocking to me is the somewhat smaller size. As I said before, the mouse fits well and doesn't hurt my hand, but coming from the Intellimouse 3.0, this seems smaller. Yes, I tried holding it in the box at the brick and mortar store, but that clearly can't convey the real feel. I will note I have big hands and am a big guy standing at over 6'. This trend of tiny mice stinks and I feel when I use an office computer or a friend's that I'm pinching the mouse.
Overall, this is a great mouse and the best thing I can find. It hits all the good points and works flawlessly. The button issue is just me and the size thing is more me too. It'll have many years of use operating my computer.
