Well, here's the thing. This thing is really cool. A great concept that I hope will pick up steam. But there is the keyword, it is a concept. There is so much that is left to be desired. I set it up and then ran through the demo and some of the free applications/games they have at the store. Neat. Now what?
You see, there is just so much that needs to be done. The library of games available to purchase separately aren't very good. Yes, just like a PC, to get good use of it you need software. Not just any software, but good software. There is no "killer app" for the Oculus! It is a toy, plain and simple. I played with it for a couple of hours. Felt sick, wasn't too impressed with the graphics. Fine. I went out and bought a GTX 1070. Another $350 I had to spend. OK, I'm not as sick but I still feel a little motion sickness. The graphics are marginally better. What now, the other games need a touch controllers? OK. BAM! Another $200. So lets tally it up: $600 for Oculus, $350 for a graphics card (because a GTX 960 doesn't cut it) + $200 for touch controllers because all the cool new games require it. $1150 just for the hardware. Now for some games. $20 - $90 each and they aren't even that great. After all this the only thing I really like from it is the bundled XBOX controller.
So summing it up, this ain't a cheap hobby here, kids. You'll be spending and spending and it'll still not be right. Maybe it'll be for anticipation that something really good will come up OR you just happen to have $1,150 to burn.
I'll still take my time to see if I want to keep it. That is, I'll see how many lunches I can lose until I get used to it. After all this I may be wondering what else to do with it. We'll see.
P.S. The Amazon gift card bundle was what pushed me over the edge; it really is a good deal! If you're ready to dive into VR this may be the best opportunity.
Having tested both the HTC Vive and the Oculus, I feel that the Oculus is a slightly more polished experience. The headset is more comfortable, the integrated headphones are great and convenient, and the touch controllers have a more natural feel. This is a great deal for the headset and a $100 gift card
With the Free $100 gift card for the regular price of the Oculus Rift this is a no brainer if you are planning to jump into VR. I already own a Vive for family room scale and it is great. This one will be for my Sims and a very small play space in the upstairs office. Now I will be able to enjoy the best of both worlds.
